If one has spent some time in the online Orthodox community, one has likely come across the claim that Orthodox Christians hold to “Tradition” and reject any development of doctrine. But is this truly the case, and what is Tradition anyways?

Loaded question however yes on minor things no on the broad things. What Jesus set in stone He set in stone from day one. depends the issue we talking about.

Also, finished this video. This talk about a living tradition is very good. Really reminds one of process philosophy and actually Neo-Platonism. Change is part of this world but at the same time there is stability of perception.

The Church’s understanding of the deposit of faith progresses over time with continued ecumenism. Ask yourself if your own understanding of Christianity will advance in 10 years. Of course it will, your precision and knowledge will be greater. It’s no different than how a fetus becomes a man. It’s the exact same organism, but one is more advanced. One of the themes of God is how we change and grow in conformity with His unchanging and eternal nature

Great talk, hadn't thought of this from these perspectives. Also random question, love that print of Fr. Stanilaoe on your right, how did you have them printed or is there a shop?

May we also be careful to not become guilty of the offense which ascribes mundane interpretation to the Holy Name of the Lord through mental speculations or false spirit, thereby artificially encapsulating.

Your mention about procession has made me realised that Neo-Platonic emanation can actually be understood as a form of procession

Do you make a distinction between Orthodox development vs the Roman Catholic (Cardinal Newman) conception of doctrinal development or would you say they’re the same?
@iliya3110
@iliya3110 7 ай бұрын
@@telosboundI used to be RC and I’m Orthodox now. My understanding is that St Vincent’s conception of development isn’t like Cardinal Newman’s (the Catholic view). Maybe I’m wrong but our Orthodox conception on development, as I understand it, is more like the terms and ways we might use to describe certain doctrines may change, but it’s not that we are growing “seeds” of doctrines that over two millennia finally become an oak tree or something (RC view). But rather what we believe now is what we’ve always believed. We do not add to it but we may explain the same things differently and in that sense we “progress” and develop. Does that sound right to you?

@@telosbound that’s how my ROC priest explained the Councils to me. Councils gather and manifest the mind of Christ confirming and making clear what we already believed prior.

Hey there, just curious at what age you started to express this serious intetest in Orthodox theology? I know you are 19 and yet your articulation and rapid-fire delivery are more like a tenured professor or brainiac (similar style as a Ben Shipiro). Are you in uni somewhere? I mean WOW.

The context to the name Christ is within its relationship to the pure devotees of the lord. Yeshua is therefore the relation which puts the name Christ in proper context. So the fullness of the Lord is contained in the name Yeshu Christe

This is also support for the veneration of theotokos and the purified saints who know Jesu Christos personally. As it is written according to St. John, those who are sinners cannot know the Lord. However it is so that one who knows the Lord personally is one-in-a-million-million or less but, although someone may not know the Lord personally, he may be part of the apostolic succession, and he will know the way to the Lord and be able to at least rise us to his position, as much as we are good servants and privy to grace. Therefore we must also take a spiritual father to know the lord, for he may advise us personally and give us a chance to become obedient to someone more worthy, qualified in the method of worship and service. Which the salt of is grace and love for Christ but the practice is a science nonetheless, although it is a divine science which is thereby distinct from science of matter which is gathered fully by flawed senses, and rarely accompanied by faith, if ever used for it. I pray that all I said has been right, for I am determinedly sinful at heart, and devoid of true love. Thus even the scriptures are not authorive when passed over my tongue. In sanskrit it is said *sat shastri kurvanti shastrani* and in the context of its placement, it means that scriptures are made into true scriptures, by the use of a pure devotee. And what you have not heart from the saints or the gospel I’m explaining, such comes from 6 goswamis. Although in first Corinthians 14 37-40 there’s some authorization, who among us knows enough to determine who is in full accordance with St. Paul’s holy instruction? I’ve been wrong most often before. In the name of the father and the son and the Holy Spirit amen

The word of god is fully contained in the name of Christ. John 17: 11-12. Because the absolute nature of the lord, his name is non different than his self, unlike in this world where names are temporary and abstractive. Therefore by his infinite mercy through the incarnation of Christ Jesus, we are able to freely associate with the lord through his name which was revealed. Although his name is pure always, due to our offenses to him, the sinful reactions in our mind, we are unable to say the name without offense. Of course the syllables are not the name. In sanskrit, the word Krista means all attractive, or the one whose form is attraction. (There are other etymologies as well for example krts can means existence or action) Myself I am a sinner and offensive to god but I desire here to encourage you to pray on these things in order to gain the proper faith to glorify the name of Christ Jesus. Because by his name all things are done, and his name is not different than himself. Lord Jesus Christ Son of God have Mercy on me a sinner 🙏🏼 amen
