@@EverybodyLovesSarah why feel bad? Being a kid is great most kids are happier. Kids have less stress. They have more time to do things. They have more friends. They are more care free. What made highschool so amazing for me was the fact that I did “make my own choices and did whatever I want”. I get it, I know a lot of people hated highschool. But just because it was an amazing time in my life why would you feel bad? I’m still very close with about 8 friends from highschool from 10 years ago. The best friends I will ever have in life and we made SO many memories to look back on.

True that. There is no "perfect" childhood. Life is a give and take. One thing is for sure though, 0.000001% of the population will ever see and do the incredible things they have. Truly priceless experiences.

exactly. most "normal" kids miss out on 100% of the experiences these kids have had. Who's to say what experiences some one "should" have anyhow. It's all about how the parents want to raise them.

I have a good friend who is married to a Greek girl, and they moved from Greece to the US, they were living in Denver for many years and his kids begged him to move back to Europe. Not true for some. Our school district didn't close down and my daughter got about as normal of a school experience that you could hope for (masks being the exception). Thankfully, we live in a sane place not run by virtue signaling administrators. But I know that's not true of all places, unfortunately. Sorry you and many others that had to have your school years tarnished over that.

At 13 yrs old I moved from small town Kansas to Kumasi with my parents. My dad taught at the Bible College. It changed my whole perspective on culture and normality. I missed my culture and school but wouldn’t have traded living in Ghana in the 70s for anything.

@@dagwood1327 wow that is so cool to hear. i've been to kumasi and one of my closest friends is from there. i can't imagine what it looked like in the 70s. also thats awesome what your dad did, my father's main goal when moving here was to start a church and i think that also helped my experience living here.

@@earthtohannah. I probably would be shocked at the changes to the country. I know the house we lived in was torn down for improvements. I went to the zoo often. Home schooled. Had lots of pet. Met the Ashanti king. And was there during a military coup. A few years latter fellow missionary kid went back to Nigeria to work with a hospital. He and his wife ended up with a steady stream of orphaned kids. His wife died from cancer but he remains there now with about 30 kids. He remarried a Nigerian lady.

Going to a school with a bunch of “strangers” with different upbringings and lifestyles is not the best route to making quality relationships esp for many in our current society.

The things that most of us grew up with (those of us in the same age bracket) are mostly no longer there, society is decaying/rotting. A person can understand what sewage is like without diving into it. And I believe I have heard both parents say numerous times they did not want their kids to be raised in what is now considered "typical society". Their dream IS doing just this..to have a huge impact on their children's lives, not allowing society to do that.

They are not going to say they missed out on things, while telling their parents. They don't want to hurt their parents. I am glad the older daughter, that is in college, kind of talked about what she missed out on. These kids need friends, that they are around all the time. They need socialization. But luckily one child is leaving next year, to experience life he has never experienced. Hopefully he will be equipped to do this. And why does he want to leave??? In my opinion, this is all dad's idea.

Children don't grow up to be upstanding, confident, well grounded individuals with a strong moral compass by "hanging around friends all the time". They should be learning all these things from their parents. Most kids I see today spend 95% of their time on TikTok and Instagram (right alongside their parents) That's not the type of socialization I would want to subject my kids to. Kids will always miss things one way or another that they don't have access to no matter what situation they're in, it does not mean they're being deprived in any way at least from things that really matter. And as to why the oldest son would want to travel out on his own, that's kind of a silly question. Generally when children become adults they do want to go out on their own and experience different things, really not that unusual.

@@robertmunafo5039 You are right. I have no idea what their lifestyle is like. That is their decision and I respect it. I do think that the dad chose this way of life and dragged everyone with him. It's just my opinion. Where you are wrong is about children in general. My daughter has many friends, most of them are from high school, and many from college and grad school. She received a degree in social work from an undergrad college, with a minor in dance. She then received a degree from a grad school, in social work and was magna cum laude. She grew up to be an upstanding,, confident, grounded person with a strong moral compass with many friends. Her friends also excelled in high school and college and grad school. She danced 5 days a week, 4 hours at night, which gave her discipline and of course, more friends. With her high school friends, male and female, she went to football games, prom, homecoming and many other things, with her friends. This helps in socialization skills that help when you venture into the real world. I think you being a man, it is difficult to understand the need for friends, especially female friends. She is now 30 and still remains close friends from high school and college. With us and her friends, she was sent into the world with skills she needed. I fear the children don't have those skills, and don't have really close friends to talk to or hang around with, other than her family. Their daughter in college seems to recognize that now. As far as their son leaving next year, that's great. Their 20 year old seems to still be living on the boat, but I could be wrong. He must have not left when he was 18. Even those that are home schooled, on land, still have these advantages. So no, your generalization of children is wrong. It doesn't apply to any of my daughter's friends. At some point in your life, the parents have to let go, being the most difficult part of life. And sometimes that letting go starts in high school. So please don't generalize children. I don't think this will ever get read, because I only see the positive comments, but if it is read, I wish you peace.

And letting go is one of the most difficult things to do, but it is something necessary for the child.

And I disagree entirely. My mom went to college at 53 and succeeded brilliantly. I did trade school in my mid-late 20’s and make over 110k a year. Her comments seemed shallow to me and only involved very temporal immediate things, there were no lessons learned worth mentioning in all the “travelling”.

What’s great about Anna is that she knew what she wanted, and it is great she was supported. However, distance education has been a thing for decades already. The pandemic especially showed that sooooo many courses can be done online. Hundreds of universities all over the world offer proper college courses without requiring physical presence. Some people prefer that and thrive doing that.

Yeah but show humility at the same time. American society is raising a generation of insecure children, or sociopathic children. Finding peace within yourself and who you are, not hurting other people with your growth is a recipe for a life well lived.
