In this week’s #AskDrDurie, myeloma expert Dr. Brian G.M. Durie discusses when MGUS patients should undergo bone marrow biopsy and how the IMF’s iStopMM study results-presented at the 2022 American Society of Hematology (ASH) meeting-may help predict when a bone marrow biopsy is needed.
The BOTTOM LINE: Using the iStopMM model, bone marrow sampling may be safely deferred. However, other studies will be needed for validation.

whats the big deal with doing a bone marrow biopsy? Why not just do it? Its not that bad. I had one the same week i was told i have mgus, doing a second one next week. also had: fish, chromosone etc.

The big deal is, that it’s painful while being done.

Might not be that bad if you respond well to the local anaesthetic/numbing injections and you had a good doctor with years of experience that did it properly. I am one of those people that local anaesthetic doesn't work at all for. I am expected to rely on my own resilience for pain relief.

What I have read it’s more painful then not. You can’t actually numb the bone, so I was told.

@@lindagillies2561 yep I am reading and seeing videos of people saying that the bone part is the most painful part, but I watched someone who is similar to me that is resistant to local and everything hurt. The whole time. Nope I wont be doing this without some sedation at least! 😳
