Great review. Best use of PHEV EV range on long trips is to use EV on the urban/back roads and "HEV only" on main roads. Save the battery for the first & last few miles. Trip reset on re-fuelling is an optional user setting that can be changed in the config menu.

Great consumer review and agree I've had 2 PHEVs now and its all about keeping them charged. It's how they work to best effect. :)

Thanks for this upload, the first video I have seen of a real life long distance test in a Phev. I previously owned a C-HR hybrid and frankly on the motorway the MPG was shocking so pleased some PHEV’s perform significantly better as my next car might be a plug in hybrid

Been looking forward to this one Ped. I have always been sceptical about plug in hybrids, however, you have opened my eyes to the reality of living with one. The Kia looks a fantastic motor and is very well specced. Spacious, comfortable and quite economical for a vehicle of it’s size. You looked well chilled at the wheel, and the girls were mega-chilled. Hi Ped Good to see the Pups out again🥰 looking as cute as ever. Thanks to your video my understanding of PHEV greatly improved, especially the MPG figures often quoted. Not for me at the moment as torque and towing ability still a major factor in staying with dreaded Oil burner.

I also have driven to the the South West recently on holiday in a Kia Sorento 2 PHEV and I can agree totally with everything Pete says. I would say I was achieving 55mpg at first then dropping as you are forced to use less electric. I had a real load on though 3 large adult and a 50kg dog and a full boot of at least 150kgs.The gearbox and drive configurations keep your mind occupied for the best combination. The funny thing is if you go into sport mode as I would do for some of the windies, you will RECHARGE THE BATTERY COMPLETELY. Which is great if you're worried about battery level. But in sport mode your mpg drops to around 42-44mpg.

I love taking my Prius Prime on long trips. I may not get the phenomenal mileage that I do on short trips, but the mileage is still very, very good. Some people say that PHEV's are no good for people who take long journeys, but they are way better than gas only vehicles. They may not be better than HEV's for long trips, but when I was buying here in Canada the rebates on the PHEV Prius Prime brought it down to a similar cost as an HEV Prius. That made it a no-brainer to go for the PHEV over the HEV.

I have a KIA Optima SW hybrid which has an electric range of 35 miles. I top it up every night to fully make use of the electric range. I recentlt went to York fully loaded and averaged 59 mpg-petrol only! The combined range at the moment is over 100mpg as most of my driving is in electric mode. I am really like it as it has all the creature comforts I need.

Important thing was your passengers had a lovely safe trip in that vehicle. Seemed very relaxed and content , the Petrol Pooches.

Totally agree about Hybrids, it’s how you use them. I’ve been using them for 7 years and they work for me massively. If I was a rep doing high miles, buy a diesel. One little tip, if your journey is a mixture of motorways and cities, use the electric in the cities and the petrol engine on the motorways. That way the petrol engine is not working hard stop starting in the city, but on the motorway it’s at a constant speed and not revving hard. That way your getting better fuel economy, took me 4 years to work that one out !

A plug-in hybrid that has fast charging makes so much sense most people on a 345 hour journey will stop for lunch or break if you could charge that battery out within 30 minutes it would be amazing and really improve fuel economy while the charging network grows across the country especially in places like Cornwall Scotland and Wales

Journey profile and charging daily is the key for PHEVs. If your daily commute is within the electric range, and you commit to charging daily, it's perfect. You get the benefits of an electric vehicle without the expense of the full size battery. Can't be bothered charging or regularly doing long journeys, then you're much better off with a regular combustion vehicle. I bought a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV at the point where my Range Rover was costing £125 to fill up, and I've never looked back. It's like driving for free in comparison.

That Kia looks awesome, I had a brand new Outlander Phev for a company car in 2017, on a run to Cambridge from Bolton and it averaged around 30MPG.

It's a good thing you mention about charging the Hybrid to get better MPG Pete , I meet so many Business Customers delivering Corporate Fleet Demo Vehicles, I can only count on ONE hand the amount of people who actually charge them . It makes no financial sense in my view. Great video mate

Good film Pete. We have an Outlander PHEV. I have to say I'd think twice if I could go back in time. We keep it charged on a regular basis as we have a 7kw wall box and cheap rate electric overnight. If we just kept fairly local it would be a no brainer and we'd probably get the advertised 150mpg. However once you start doing longer trips on a regular basis it nosedives. Our family dynamic means that we are doing a couple of hundred miles every other week. I keep track of the stats using a third market app. I think the best we've had is 56mpg, but the average is normally between 32-38mpg. Quite often I get better mileage from my Mini Cooper S.

I always love your trips to Meva, interesting to see the journey in different cars. I normally use the coast road through Dorchester, looks like you took the A303? I agree with you on driving "chill out" cars on a long journey, next time I visit Meva hopefully I'll be in my new RAV4 HEV, be interesting to see what mpg I'll get in that.

Just taken my hybrid Sorento to France and back including 1x miniature schnauzer and family of 4. Boot took the lot, very relaxing with auto cruise and lane assist (even on the 2)and car performed really well. Very similar to your story, including mpg. However I don't get as much electrical assistance on the shorter journeys....great review

Another well structured review Peter and what looks and feels like a cracking motor. I think the only things preventing the Sorento, other KIA models, the brand and other brands from this part of the world becoming mainstream in the UK are brand snobery and perceived status. If people look past the two aforementioned things and look at 'value' this becomes a 'no brainer' and will become even more so as EV's move into mainstream.

Also,love the view from Cornwall house,can you move that wooden telegraph poll though?!

I just picked up my new honda civic ehev from cardiff. 4.5 hour journey back on A/B roads most of the way and got over 65mpg. Absolutley made up with it. Only used quarter of a tank back up to liverpool. You really need to try one. Best car iv driven in years

Not sure if your car has a heads up display through the windscreen which i find immeasurably useful together with the indicator wing mirrors appearing in place of the dials. Well done Kia

Hi Ped. I have this car as well and I absolutely love it. I live in the Netherlands and I just recently took her on a long trip via ferry through Dunkirk to Dover then onwards to Birmingham, a whopping 8hr drive and it was fantastic. On the your point about the trip reset when the tank is refilled, I have found that this can be switched off via a setting in the setup menu. Hope this helps!

You can change the settings for drive information resseting - to manual, automatically when car is parked, automatically when you refill.

Took my A class PHEV down to bath a couple of weeks ago 3 hour each way trip. Managed to get 15% battery back

So Ive just realised i can stream spotify through Waze on my phone into the bluetooth of the Jag, so my trip home from Sunderland was accompanied with the most excellent podcasts of Behind the Glass and Mr Sam Moores, i must say a brilliant suggestion and review wasnt bad either but for now getting 54-60 MPG from a 2.2 TD XF means no PHEV or EVs for me for a while

Pete, another great video and you have answered a useful question - as I assumed the hybrid ‘EV’ vehicles used the electric side of the vehicle during normal running to help with fuel consumption but from what you explained, the EV element is only a slow speed ‘local running’ aide? So I assume they are design to run in electric mode in towns and then use the combustion engine for ‘real world’ driving. Which means some of the figures quote for MPG are heavily influenced by local slow speed journeys?

I was all for going full electric for my daily drive, but wife wanted 4wd so we settled on a Countryman PHEV. We always plug in at home and now even take an extension lead on our holidays just in case the holiday cottage might have a suitable plug point we can get to for an overnight charge. Mini PHEV though only has a 3kW internal charger so to be honest public charging is a guilt trip. In the time it would take to charge the 10kWh battery pack of the Mini PHEV on a public charger you could fully charge three Teslas!

Nice review thank you. Surprised you didn't take the pedal off the side of the bike that was face down, just to spread the load a little more. Waiting for it to launch in Canada finally which may happen this Autumn. My 19 Niro PHEV doesn't have the modes like the newer models, just EV only or HEV. So i tend to stick it into HEV when i leave the city limits and keep the EV only until i next arrive in a built up area. I find in certain conditions it will start to gradually recharge the battery (not fast motorways or A roads). Not sure if this is my new car yet. Hyundai launching the Santa Cruz pickup with the possibility of this same drivetrain (as it's Tucson stablemate already has) has me thinking i may finally be able to get a pickup that keeps with my attempt at keeping greener.

I recently picked up a Seat Leon PHEV and drove it home 130 miles on motorway. Unfortunately, the EV battery was flat on departure, but it still achieved 55mpg on petrol only. The car coasts whenever possible, regens well and will use the electric motor whenever it can. Once charged I travel on short journeys around town and get 30-40 mile range for an 90p overnight charge. I really can't see any negatives about them. Definitely the way forward.

Tis indeed quite impressive. Fuel consumption not as good as my 08 Astra Estate, I get 45 local and around 50 on a longer journey if I'm not in a hurry. Great to see the Petrol Pups happy in the car (zero vom!).

Potential PHEV owners need to be made to watch this vlog. My story started almost 6 years ago in a Mitsubishi PHEV that I had for 3 years and 30,000 miles. I got an incredible 105 MPG (75 MPG after the price of electricity) but I charged it every day and during the day. However if you don't do this you will obviously get less MPG than a none PHEV version (maybe 30 MPG) In fact Mitsubishi told me that if you do 100 or more miles a day then buy the diesel version.

That's good mpg for a car that size and weight. As an everyday proposition I like it more and more.

Thoroughly enjoyed the video and the doggies are dead cute! Re fuel economy, not terribly impressed with those numbers for a longer journey. Our 5.0 Mustang returns 30 plus on a trip and I know which car I’d rather have. Sounds like EV and PHEV only become worthwhile for shorter trips. How long does it take to charge the Kia on a standard three pin plug? Ps, that first cold one is always the best right?

Another enjoyable episode With an EV already I decided to not go for a hybrid for my car as nearly every trip is a long one (200 mile return is about the minimum) where the battery and motor will largely be just extra weight. I think the X5 45e is a great option though but I need the prices to drop a bit first!

PHEVs are a good compromise for fear of range and charging but as an EV driver for the last 3 years, it's not difficult to make it work..... in fact check out my road trip to the coast in a VW ID3.

I have to agree with you on your assessment of the overall consumption figures of plug in hybrids. A couple of years ago when I was working away from home in Hertfordshire (I live in Cornwall near Meva!) so had a weekly commute of 600mls. My 07 plate Volvo V70 diesel estate would give me 42/43mpg and if I drove carefully on a run I could achieve 50mpg with an easy 600ml + on a tank. One weekend I had a Mitsubishi PHEV to test. I left home with a fully charged battery but by the time I’d got onto the A30 I had basically used the battery power and, driving at the same speed as I would in my old Volvo, I couldn’t make Hertfordshire without having to make a fuel stop at Reading averaging low 30’s mpg. So I do not see where the progress is when I could achieve better consumption with my trusty old Volvo than the shiny new hybrid? …. As you say a lovely car in every other way, but unless you are only doing short journeys there’s little benefit in terms of fuel consumption. Buy because you like the car but don’t claim to be ‘saving the planet’!!

Those seats look seriously comfy!! I'm still not entirely convinced with the electric / PHEV / hybrid thing to be honest.. We have Kia Sorento's for some of our specialist instructors at work and they don't bother with the charging system, they just fill them with petrol and go.. And, looking forward to a week in The Kerno next month.. Will be good to get the i30N on those A and B roads.

Big car for a 1.6 engine and auto box. Does it feel under powered compared to the last diesel auto or similar diesel auto SUV? I know you said not a sports car in a past review but nice to have some pull like even any decent 2.0 TD car of the last few years. Always like the videos

Pure EV isn't really viable in my mind at present with range and lack of infrastructure. What an amazing view! Very jealous! Enjoy the cycling, great place to ride if you like hills :-)

I have a 2018 Sorento and I love it. On a long run I would expect 33 mpg from the 2.2 diesel. I think you indicated about 40mpg from the phev. However I would like to see the charging cost factored into the comparison. (Which it never seems to be in these comparisons). Whatever the adjustment it would bring the comparisons closer together. Something like fuel cost per 100 miles would be a good measure.

Thanks for the video. I'm considering this Kia and the Toyota Highlander PHEV Hybrid. What is your honest opinion on the comfort factor of the driver and passenger seating? My wife has back issues, so seating comfort is most important on longer trips like yours.

Hi Peter, I could not go back to a Petrol car only and in the future plan to stay with a hybrid vehicle as the MPG with my e:HEV I get 53.8 mpg around town and it costs me less than £20 per week to run. The problem is I could not have a PHEV as I cant get a cherger installed and thats the problem I face. I also don't see many chargers on Merseyside and thats when they work so I will face problems in the future and possibly won't have a car after 2030 unless things change. KiA make great cars but I found Honda the better deal for me just a bigger car and with 4 adults the Kia Niro could not match are needs as a family. A great video Peter I enjoyed this one. I don't have a Kia as an f.y.i. Where I stumble with my PHEV is when I forget to switch it back from overnight charge (to take advantage of non-peak pricing) at the house to "charge now." A couple of times I have come back from getting groceries and lunch or other errands that take 15 minutes or more, unplug and then discover that not a single electron was passed from the public charger to the car. Whoops. I am now going to make it part of the pre-departure checklist to verify that the car is in "charge now" before backing out of the garage.

Wow, those little streets in Cornwall are rather tight! 😳

It has three trips. Two you reset at your leisure and another that can be set either to reset after a few hours idle or when refuelling. The third also can be reset at your command or left for an overall reading over a long period. I get a consistent 39mpg average on my diesel version and 44 on a long journey.

Interesting following your mpg. On a long haul, holiday/loaded up, the 06 RX400h is vehicle of choice(most comfortable and biggest boot). Get ave 35.8 urban, 41.4 on motorway which I've always found odd. The hybrid as its old tech not great range, yet in right traffic flow I can drive to city centre on A580 and engine can run for as little as 6 mins,rest is coasting / regen. Keep wondering what a phev would do but I like the Lexus, reliable and it's only done 77k. Maybe eventually get someone like Moggy to try full EV conversion and/or fit modern hybrid battery pack?

As a boy I used to fish in that harbour when living nearby. Now I'm an exile but don't miss the tourist ( Emmet) crowds :-)

thought i'd mention here given the bike loading that i picked up my new Specialized Aethos Comp last week after much insurance negotiation and trying to find anyone who had anything available....

great video, now I happen to be looking at a new car but live 120 miles from work, somerset up to oxford, so m5/m4 etc (approx 90miles worth), where i then commute about 35-40miles over 4-5 days, so would the smart mode be a better option for those longer stints of driving to gain more hybrid assistance, rather than use EV and up 25% in the 1st 15 miles as you mentioned. i would obviously be getting a charger at home if i got a PHEV option (currently looking at a hyundai tuscon/kia sportage) for my days off, plus i have access to an electric charger when near work, so i can use EV mode once i arrive, for the daily commute and charge fully before returning. so 2 questions, was that £50 petrol top up which you said about 400+ mile range sufficient for the return journey and what are the average costs of charging please? reason i ask is to gauge the cost per trip for myself, as currently i'm doing this journey in a 1.6 diesel, great on the motorway part but doesnt like the short commutes part. I hear a lot of people say go for the HEV option but through work the HEV is approx £100 per month more than the PHEV option, now in my head that would almost pay for the fuel side each month.

Thanks for the video. I always wonder isn’t phev cars are also hybrid, so why after consuming the battery they don’t charge enough from petrol driving then go back to electricity driving mode again. Am I missing something?

Ah what a nice ride. You picked up on the ABC, always be charging. I have a BEV and before that i had a PHEV a BMW330e (2017 model) which was absolutely awful for long trips, MPG went through the floor. But over total ownership over 3 and a bit years it averaged 180+mpg. For lots of people like me most trips are within the EV range. Day to day around town and local you maybe hit the range of that PHEV of mine a few years back a couple of times, now they are up to 50ish almost all local trips are covered and the slightly less than stellar MPG you get on a road trip of a few hours like yours that for most is not regular. Yes i have a BEV so i'm kinda bais but most people do not realise how few miles they do each day they just worry about those big trips which are few and far between. I'm not a PHEV hater like lots of BEV owners i think they are brilliant in that they will show ppl who do small trips everyday that they can go for an EV. I recently did a long trip with no planning purposely just to prove to myself it can be done. Time waiting at chargers? 0 not 1 second did it while i slept. costs of the trip £8 and i went from the east coast of the uk to Liverpool then down to telford and via Nottingham and a few cities. Was a great get away after being locked up for a while. Charging was not an issue and £8 for the miles we did was just amazing considering we went from one side of the country and back again.

Great video and lovely car. I feel Plug-in hybrids are overpriced when new. I recently purchased a used Passat Estate GTE but only after it had lost £30k in value rather than paying the £47k list price. 85% of my yearly use is fully within its EV only range and with my cheap leccy tariff this equated to 1.5p per mile to run unless I'm doing a long run. It's very important to do your research and find a PHEV that can truly work as an EV as most turn on the engine to heat or cool the cabin. So this Kia and the previous Hyundai Ioniq plug-in you had cannot really be used as Pure EVs for short runs. Whereas cars such as the Toyota Prius plugin and Volkswagen group plug-in hybrids (Audi,VW,Skoda,Seat) do not use the engine at all even to heat the cabin. These can really be used as pure EVs for short commutes without a drop of fuel being used for the first 30 or so miles. Everyone should be allowed to use what meets their needs without the government forcing a one size fits all future.

I’m curious to know the Diesel compares on long trips.
