If you ever referred to a reenactor's uniform as a "costume," it's a good bet that they corrected your use of such a horrid term! In my experience with reenacting circles, the idea of "costuming" has a negative connotation of modern fabrics, machine sewing, and other terrible farberies. Indeed, I have on many occasions been guilty of scoffing at the term being used, myself.
However, whenever I speak to my friends in theatre, they put forward an entirely different concept of costuming. To them, costuming departments are some of the most dedicated and skilled members of their entire team, as they- when budgets allow- do their absolute best to "recreate" aspects of material culture for display...But hold on- that sounds an awful lot like what we reenactors do, too! Might I have been wrong in my scoffing? What, exactly, is the difference between a Costume and a Uniform? And when I go to my events, what am I actually wearing? -
