ngl in my opinion the reason the boys aren't into it as much, or think the movie is as iconic as kelsey thinks (and i agree with her), is that they are boys and this movie was not made for them or with them in mind. yes guys can love the movie and be into it as much as any girl, and some ladies may hate it, but this was a product by and for women and i think this is why it resonates so much to so many of us. it's mindless fun that plays with all the classic tropes we love by doing it well, honoring the movies that came first and giving us a fresh take to enjoy.
@lezlezzin
@lezlezzin Жыл бұрын
yes, exactly, thank you! I wanted to say the same, and you said better than I could think to. sometimes I wish the boys would take a step back and realize some movies are not necessarily for them, and stop trying to compare them to "boy" movies, actors, directors.
@marykatemchale4589
@marykatemchale4589 Жыл бұрын
Okay I understand what the boys are saying about the ending feeling tacked on, BUT I think it was so important for the girls to acknowledge to each other that getting revenge wasn’t making them feel better. Also the boyfriend was the absolute worst and I would’ve been upset if they didn’t take him down.

Nope. Kelsey is 100% right, this movie is iconic. Mean girls randomly became popular over time, I don’t remember it being super popular immediately. Who’s to say this one won’t as well? I had low expectations for it and then…wow. Loved it.
@tayloroo

I remember it being popular when it came out but I was also like 12 so my worldview was pretty limited haha. I do definitely agree it became a way bigger deal over time with the help of the internet though. It's so quotable and has a strong rewatch factor, so it makes sense. I can see this movie going the same way! Loved it

it's not even really that good and relies on outdated stereotypes of women to be funny. if anything it just makes me sad to see how toxic female culture curated by men defines culture. mean girls is satire detached from teen experience.
@newmoondoggie

You must be very young if you think Mean Girls wasn't popular when it came out. It was an instant hit, premiering #1 at the box office, grossing over $130 million at the box office, received majority positive reviews, and it was Lindsay Lohan's breakout role away from Disney projects. It was nominated for 13 Teen Choice Awards. Mean Girls wasn't a sleeper hit or a cult classic. It was loved from day one.

to this day i still feel like i’m the only one who one, wasn’t expecting them to ever kiss. and two, was glad that the movie suddenly didn’t FORCE them to, either. because as a queer girl myself, and despite them being horribly toxic to each other, it’s still nice to see a lesbian and straight girl be strictly friends and i wish more people were just accepting of that fact instead of instantly going “i sense some chemistry why don’t you make out” also: idk WHY anyone would want the girl who outed the other girl and claimed her as a predator to kiss the girl who is still learning to unpack that trauma??? toxic or not, don’t wish kisses on people who are horrible to each other!

I love the foreshadowing in this film! Especially that smug or like contempt filled side eye glance we are blessed with when Drea is talking about narcissists being too focused on themselves to notice when they're being manipulated and we get a shot of Elanor side eyeing her, freaking brilliant. I’m unfortunately still in high school (almost out thank the fuck gods) but for my school at least, you dont really see people making fun of ppl but you can hear people silently doing so. I’m an eavesdropper pffft tho I don’t know if its just because I’m unlucky and always get put into the same classes with THOSE kids, but I’ll definitely hear once and a while them talking shit abt random kids they’ve seen around school, abt how they look, act, etc. But that group is so small compared to the amount of outcasts we have now so I think thats why we dont actually see or hear abt it loudly. And to be honest it just depends who you hang out with like I ended a friendship with this girl because she just became really toxic and kept making fun of people or things that weren’t that big of a deal.

as someone who’s currently in high school, 1. yes, popular kids do still make fun of outcasts, but it’s more talking behind each others backs rather than saying things to their face. in my experience, no one outright bullies people to their faces but instead in group chats with their friends 2. i haven’t seen anyone at my school wear locket necklaces, but i def saw them in like middle school

As someone who knows Vancouver film productions well (my mother has worked in the industry since I was born and I help out), Garrick is 100% correct. There's a specific look things that shot here have, lighting and colour grading in particular but also shot pacing. Also almost all the props and background costumes are from one business so there's something your brain is probably noticing even if you consciously aren't.

imo Canadian TV is structured more like theatre, compared to American TV. Much like the UK, actors in Canada generally have theatre-based training, more so than screen-acting training. Also, the Canadian TV system is a government subsidized grants-based system, so the requirements for pitching/making TV and film is more similar to the grants system in the fine arts world. Canada is also currently trying to push this model, because Canadian-produced TV actually does really well on international markets, because there tends to be a focus on specific identity issues, while remaining relatable and universal. Kim's Convenience is a good example -- its context is highly specific: a Korean immigrant family, living in Toronto, trying to find their place in this culture, while remaining true to their home country. It's an exploration of diaspora, within a Canadian context. It's also about a convenience store owner, so we get a work-place comedy with a diverse cast of supporting stories. This is also what makes it universal. There are so many stories of immigration/emigration, diaspora, and cultural sharing. Convenience stores are accessible sites for these stories. If you've lived in a downtown centre, these stories will feel familiar to you. The possibilities to relate to a story, like Kim's Convenience, is just really high -- either you've been a customer in these spaces, the convenience store owner (and the community!) is a staple in your life, or you have experienced diaspora and immigration yourself. So, as a TV product, because it has such a high relatability factor, it is an ideal product for streaming. This is also why Schitt's Creek and Letterkenny did so well in USA and abroad, because there's a feeling of it being so specific and unique (Canadiana/Canadianisms are definitely used!), yet also very familiar and formulaic (small-town kindness; communities coming together, working together). (Both these shows are also dialogue/writing gold, something I think is also owed to the theatre roots.)

The biggest problem i had with the ending was that they sort of breeze past Maya HITTING DREA WITH HER CAR. I could've lived with it more even with a small change like a mutual fight/make up at the party instead of Drea chasing after her, or at least not framed it like their friendship is 100% aspirational at the end. They both did terrible things, but hitting someone with your car like..she could've killed her and I had a hard time reconciling that

Maybe it’s because my mum has quite a strong moral compass when it comes to certain things so I was being influenced by her but certain scenes where it was quite violent, we kept thinking “are we supposed to be on their sides??”. Having said that, it was enjoyable, definitely gen z, and just to reiterate, love love love the colours.

I adore you Kelsey, however, I think you must must must see Clueless if you have any chance to gauge the “iconic-ness” of this genre. This movie is a love letter to Amy Heckerling’s characters and looks like if Heathers was set at Beauxbatons. I really liked this as a fun homage movie and I hope the source materials get their much deserved iconic views as well

It’s a bug deal to have Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the movie because Joss Whedon tried to ruin her career. Joss was an ass and Buffy hasn’t been in much since his sabotage attempts. It’s cool if you’re not stoked to see her, no stress or worries BUT major middle finger to Joss.

As the former poor scholarship kid in a massively wealthy private school in LA, this movie was clearly written by the rich kids from those schools jealous of us for getting into their dream schools💀 Trust me, the same varsity blues kids will trash talk poor and poc students from their jealous entitlement. I liked the movie, but the representation could not be more off and took me out a lot.

Maya doesn't like when people speculate her sexuality, which is fair it's no ones business but hers, however, she stated in an interview that whilst writing her album Moss (go listen it's amazing) she went back to a mindset similar to when she was a teen and started questioning :) and her characters crush is called Gabby

Idk my (unpopular?) Do Revenge opinion is that Drea got way too much shit thrown at her. Like her consequences were wildly disproportionate to her actions. I’m queer, the thought of being outed like that is horrendous but outing someone at day camp in middle school does not warrant being hit with a car and threatening to send their working mother to jail by framing them for having drugs (especially given that a relatively equal social/sexual event happened to Drea through what some might say is natural karma before Eleanor even got involved for her revenge plot)

When the strike is over please do Clueless it's the best movie of all time. It's so iconic that there is an inspired by Shakespeare adaptation of the entire movie (mean girls has one too) in book format.
