Thank you for the e collar talk. I work at a pet store and frequently see customers with prong collars and e collars and often have other customers complain about them. The dogs with e collars are usually the calmest, best behaved dogs. (Many are regulars and we even allow a couple to bring their dog in off leash because we know this dog won’t misbehave)

Denali works mostly off leash and people can't believe that he is listening like he is then they crap a brick when I take it off and he behaves the same way. It's about gaining there trust and respect not to hurt them into submissive shut down. That goes for ecollars and prong collars. It bothers me when people use them as a easy fix and a bandage to a bigger problem. They are used to fix that problem not cover it up.

I use an electric wheelchair I have Limb Gerdle Muscular Dystrophy and recently got a German Sheperd and Siberian Husky mix puppy her name is Shakira. I am training her myself my dad was supposed to do it he was Green Beret Special Forces vet but he suddenly died 9 months ago so it's just me and my mom. I cannot find a service dog trainer to help me. It's hard because I physically can't do nuch but I'm still doing it. Once I finish training Shakira, I think my dad would be so proud of me. I just came across your channel today and I'm so glad I did, your very calm and collected with how you present your knowledge. Thank you so so so much for the e-collar talk, so many people love to claim its abusive "because its shocks them" but they're the same people who slap one on their dog without learning to use the tool and thinking it'll automatically correct all their dog's problems. Unfortunately due to people being under educated and misusing the e-collar they are illegal in the UK, but always lovely to see someone educating other in the correct way to use such tools.

@@Thatclimbingirl that is interesting to know, but what I think should happen is you should be educated on using an E-collar before even using one on your dog tbh. Or any handling devices for dogs or disciplinary actions.

@@judyives1832 oh shut your mouth. Hundreds of service dogs, service dog trainers, and normal, qualified, professional trainers use prongs. Those stats that youre citing? The results of a flat buckle collar on a dog. Basic physics shows why a prong is a thousand times better for a dogs neck. Screaming abusive makes you look like more of a joke than you really are and that's saying something. ECOLLARS ARE A COMMUNICATION TOOL JUST LIKE CLICKERS. No one, trainers or owners, set out to abuse their dog if they're investing in training tools like these. Get off the internet Judy.

People are SO uneducated about e-collars 🙄 Ignorant people *love* to jump to the conclusion that everyone who uses an e-collar with their dog is an evil abuser and uses it to hurt their dogs. I use an e-collar most of the time with my SD, just because it’s an easy way to communicate and I know he responds well to it. Obviously we worked with my trainer first to make sure it was introduced right and he was comfortable with it and all that stuff. He works offleash sometimes, so personally I feel a lot safer having a tool I know works for us as a team if something were to happen and I needed 100% control in a crazy situation while he was offleash, like an evacuation at school or something. I just wish people would educate themselves instead of being rude and harassing other people for using a tool in a perfectly safe way just because they don’t bother to educate themselves on how it works.

It bothers me when people lump the bad in with the good. Any tool can be abusive and bad it's the person using it that makes it that way not the tool itself. The tool cant act alone. There has to be a human abuser behind it
@peachy4358
@peachy4358 4 жыл бұрын
Denali_GSDServicedog exactly. Flat collars can obviously be even more dangerous than an e-collar or a prong, but nobody harasses people for putting them on their dogs. It’s never what the tool is, it’s always how it’s used. If someone’s abusing their dog with an e-collar, it’s not the tool you should be condemning.

I am starting super slow with the vest so that she knows when the vest goes on she feels like she is a rockstar. I absolutely love love my e collar. I barely use it anymore but sometimes puppy brain pops in and a vibrate works perfect .. excited to start with her .she is so smart that she picks up work easily... I come from 45+ years of training horses so she is new to me .. I have had lots of pets but she is my first service dog .. I have severe lupus and walking and moving is getting so hard. Nice to see others work with their fur babies.... Cheers from Canada!❤❤❤❤

I got yelled at before for being "abusive" for having a prong collar on my service dog. We honestly tried both a gentle leader which did ok but was sick of the "is that a muzzle, does he bite" comments (he is a doberman so they got scared) and the martingale dog collars which he still pulled so hard he choked himself and basically walked on just his back legs. The prong is the only thing that has made him walk calmly and he has no scarring, no puncture wounds, no injuries cause I dont yank him and abuse him with it. So you are very right, when you spoke about the e-collars, its not the tool its how you use it. He's been on it for 5 years now and never once has my vet ever said he sees signs of injuries or issues.

Thank you for this information. I work with people if many varied abilities and this video is quite informative for people who don’t get it. I also appreciate that you “dress” your dog for work vs. dressing up your dog. When a service dog has dyed hair, wears bows and costumes and tutus, it is very difficult to tell the difference between a service dog and a pet for many people.

He does get costumes for things like Halloween partys at work or our 4th of july work event but I personally dont like to dress him up frequently. I dont see an issue with people dressing up there service dogs but people also cant get mad when people complement or comment on there dogs looks. It's like me having my bright pink hair and wheelchair and being mad when people say it's cool and fun and something they dont see as often.

Most service dog owners that due dye a part of their dogs body or tail or fur do it so that they are more recognizable if they are a common breed since service dogs have an easier chance of getting stolen from their owners out and about if the owner is having a reaction and cannot do anything to stop it. Most examples are of goldens and labs.. or poodles, with coats that a lot of dogs in that breed can have or only have.

I hear you, I get looks from people for using a prong collar. I used to be against prong collars until I did reaserched and found out it was the best option for my dog (watching trainers using it properly). I tried the prong on my own neck first then I tried it with my dog and best tool ever. Helped so much with my dogs dog reactivity along with other training like treats and avoidance if it gets to much so wait till he's calmed dog then try again. Now he doesn't react to dogs and don't need to correct him as he rather have treats and knows the dogs will go away and won't enter his space. So much more relaxed because before he couldn't even eat treats infront of another dog as he was that worked up. I used a haltis on him which never did anything but make sure he couldn't pull me down but he would pull through haltis.

I have a puppy who I want to get a vibration collar for. My parents hate they idea because they got a Dalmatian returned to them who got abused with one. I’m well aware how to correct with a choke chain and pinch collar (I need a well fitting one of those, just for a little extra “hey!” That I can do with my fingers) and I am sure I can use a vibration collar to good effect and only when I need it, which is not often. He already has very good recall, coming almost every time he is called, but there’s still that 5 percent that I really want to work on because it usually has to do with another dog that we “have”. He technically belongs to the neighbors, but we feed and treat him for things. It’s not that his owner doesn’t. He just doesn’t go over there to eat. But we live on a road where that 5 percent is not good and that 1% where he crosses the road could be deadly.

I might end up having to get a seizure alert and response dog for my epilepsy. (I have around 2-4 seizures a month) After a seizure, I am usually very weak and become off balance extremely easily, so I was wondering if anyone knows if a mobility handle might be something to look into or if there might be a better option. I just don't want to end up having to do anything wrong that might hurt me or the dog. Thank u!

I have to use a martingale on my boy because his neck is so thick that a flat collar can't be tight enough to not fall off when he looks down without it being to tight where it should normally sit.

I have a small hunting breed dog and I have similar issues with too much variances in her neck size over a normal day to keep the collar properly sized. I’d never heard of martingale collars before are they fairly easy to use?

I love martengale collars especially for everyday pets for walks in the event they spook or try to bolt they cant slip the collar and the pressure tends to correct them itself

@charlieg3674
@charlieg3674 3 жыл бұрын
@@wolfgirl4486 Hi, I realize this comment is a few months old, but your question never got answered. Mobility training is anything that helps a person move/walk. This can include counterbalance (dog leaning in the opposite direction you are to even you out), forward momentum (dog pulls you forward so you use less energy), bracing (acting as a solid surface to put some of your weight on when standing up or going to sit), and I believe guide tasks count as well

I’ve been training my psd for a few months. I’ve been using an e-collar that has a beeping feature and only use the shocking feature when she does something that’s dangerous to her and I only use it on the third of 9 levels as this is the lowest level that has any sort of affect on her. It doesn’t hurt her, it gets her attention. It’s a moment of realization that shows on the dogs face that you’re looking for when training with an e-collar. You’re looking for a change in body language and that’s when you know you have the right setting on it. They AREN’T inhumane IF YOU USE THEM CORRECTLY. The beeping feature on the collar I use is a positive reinforcement for a dog. If you beep the collar while you give the command, it helps the dog learn faster. But once again, for those that think e-collars are abusive or inhumane, they aren’t. Do your research, talk to trainers. E-COLLARS ARE NOT ABUSIVE IF YOU USE THEM CORRECTLY

90% of my personal experience is with cats, so given the amount of differences between the two species, I dont know if this info will cross over or not. I'm assuming it will since both are considered predators. One of the fastest ways to increase confidence in a cat is through play. Using wand toys you are able to "become the prey" and everytime it catches the prey it kind of reinforces they feelings of being big and tough and winning. Just never use your physical body as prey that's a good way to get bit and scratched lol. If there is a similar toy available for dogs that might help.

@cjthecrackheadcat mobility shouldn't start till all growth plates are closed usually around 18 months to 2 years old. You can start teaching positions before then but any weight bearing should wait till they are old enough and cleared my xrays at a vet

Would you recommend the martingale collar for training heel?I’ve seen a lot of people using prong/e-collars for training heel but I’m not really comfortable using those on my dog.I was using a head collar but my dog didn’t care about it at all and leash corrections were way too hard.I definitely need an upgrade from the flat collar because my dog literally chokes himself out on it 🤦‍♀️
