It’s definitely not nearly the amount needed to do this stuff as a lot of these videos know. I’ve done it as a hobby for years on my vehicles and have a monthly contract with my day to day employer for our work trucks.

I use 50% Isopropyl alcohol and distilled water and that seems to do a pretty good job of stripping any wax or polish off the paint

yeah, this is typically what those ceramic spray preps are made of. it's just as good. key is the distilled water.

Totally agree with you. I only used the IPA spray on the areas where I saw the left over wax. I just need to spray the whole panel instead, regardless if I see any left over wax or not. I also need better lighting!

@alexd2555 You should not wash the vehicle after this because it is precisely the last step before applying the coating, sealant, wax or any protection to the surface so that you obtain greater adhesion and durability.

People, there was no wax involved. It’s polishing compound used to remove light scratches before applying the ceramic. The polish can leave residue

Truth is, yes. If you use it a lot like these guys, the wise thing would be to wear a mask. But ofcourse no one does that, including me. Read the warnings once, a lot of chemicals we use can cause damage to the nerve-system and stuff like that. Uf you use it on a daily base , then it can cost you some healthy years of your life. Use common sense. If you can smell it, then its bad. Always wear gloves. Never touch it until you're done.

there are a few cleansers on the market that allow you to apply coating right over it. no need for the panel prep step as it is a prep in itself allowing the coating to bond to the paint

All polishes have some form of lubrication in them and the act of polishing is cleaning/improving the condition of the paint. The prep wipe is removing any oils left over from the polishing step that could interfere with the bonding of the coating.

Nooooooo sir, you don't want to do that. A waxed panel is the last thing you want to put a coating onto. The wax is designed to degrade over a matter of months, so putting a long term ceramic coating on top of it would be just like pouring the concrete slab for the foundation of your house directly over nice green grass. I hope that makes some sense. Essentially you must remove the wax or ANY other temporary coating BEFORE applying the ceramic. The ceramic must chemically bond directly to the paint in order for it to last.

I use 70% but as long as you dilute it, it works great. I use it all the time prior to paiting panels as well.

I know you are a professional and probably know more than me but I have applied ceramic coatings on my 3 cars and I only removed the polish on one of them, I used the carpro essence on the other and on the last one I used used a regular polish and didn’t wipe the oils and so far the ceramic coating it’s performing the same way on every single one. I didn’t because I saw in a video of Adam’s polishes that you don’t really have to use an IPA because the coating contains solvents that remove to oils from the paint. I don’t know maybe I’ll see a difference in a couple of years but so far they all look the same. I won’t risk it on my customers cars tho😂 every time I apply one for a customer I use the IPA

If you’re not diluting it with distilled water and spraying IPA directly on the panel, you’re damaging the clear coat and overtime it will eat away at the paint’s clarity. You’ll want to dilute it about 8:1 to properly use IPA on panels.

I agree but hopefully you are diluting the IPA. I go 90% IPA and use 5oz of it and 27oz of distilled water in a 32oz sprayer. I go to town with it to be honest. Costs about 4 dollar to make that mix so i am not shy with it. I have used some panel preps before but the only one id ever buy is the GTechniq one. A lot of them are very, very weak but the GTechniq one is good.

No, hydrophobics are not a reliable indicator of protection or lack of it. The best way is to wash the vehicle then feel the panels for contamination clay if they are not smooth, after you can polish if needed or desired. Spraying a prep spray on the paint and glass is a good way to tell if you still have protection, hard water spots or any inconsistencies on the surface. Just spray on and look for outlines, shadows or inconsistencies on the wet portions. If you find any remove them with a polish, mineral remover or solvent.

If you are happy with your paint then no. I always do because I just want to lock in the gloss before coating even if the paint is in good shape. Literally spend $60 on a DA polisher and $10 on some polish and you are ready. Dont make it too complicated.

Who knows if what he says is true, I mean if you wipe it with an IPA or wax and grease remover. If you think about it that also leaves behide a residue that would also mix with a coating. Im not saying what he says is wrong im just saying how can anyone really know if this helps or makes no difference at all. Because when you use a solution to remove another solution it leaves behind its own solution.. thus when can the paint ever truly be naked?..

I coated my car without doing an ipa wipe down and it’s been 3 1/2 years since and the coating is still beading like crazy of course I do a decon wash every 6 months and I’ve coated my other cars without this step and still the coating is doing its job! So in MY OPINION it’s not a fact it’s just my opinion we can skip this step

To fix the paint. You have to clean the residues from the polish off before applying a coating. The same as when you paint something it has to be totally clean first.Pretty straightforward concept.
