One of the most common workout questions is what to do on non-workout or off days. In this video, I’m going to show you a few exercise options you have if you absolutely must do something on those days when you aren’t scheduled to be in the gym. Keep in mind, your time away from the gym is paramount to the success you will see in it. Muscle recovery is one of the most important things you can prioritize in your training.
That said, if you are going to look for something to do on your off days you first have to identify your goal. If you are a hardgainer or skinny guy that is struggling to put on muscle mass you will want to do everything in your power to focus mostly on eating and resting on your off days. Doing extra cardio is not the prescription for adding muscle if you are already struggling to do so.
If you are looking for an activity to do, you will want to focus on those things that prioritize explosive or athletic actions without the long duration component. So think about how you can be explosive without lifting heavy weights or those that have a high eccentric component. Things like a sled push or battle ropes can be great ways to get your heart rate up quickly without turning your workout into too much of an aerobic one.
Along those same lines you can choose to do ball slams. This exercise does not have a heavy eccentric overload component and makes for an activity that you will not have a hard time recovering from. If you do this in a repetitive fashion (30 to 40 slams as quickly as you can with minimal breaks or rest), then you are going to gain the benefits of the conditioning of this without overloading the muscles beyond their ability to recover.
If on the other hand your goal is fat loss and you need to lose excessive weight, then your “off” day could provide you with a great opportunity to accumulate some additional volume that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to get in your 5 days of training. Here is where something like a steady state cardio option (running, walking, biking, etc) is going to work best since the intensity will be much lower than during a preferential HIIT session which will allow you to build up some extra minutes burning calories.
Regardless of your path you will always want to prioritize your recovery and do so with the help of good nutrition and supplementation. Here is where you can excel if you already have not dialed this area in. The ATHLEAN-Rx supplement lineup has Reconstruxion as it’s primary muscle recovery supplement. This is the choice of professional athletes who must be able to recover between games to maximize consistency of performance throughout the season. Watch your workouts and your results improve by visiting athleanrx.com and try the exact same edge the pros are using.
For more videos on how to recover from your workouts and which supplements are best for muscle recovery be sure to subscribe to our channel here on youtube at / jdcav24

The ropes are durable and just like the ones at the gym. kzfaq.infoUgkxTFxba6lNeHrZaHoY_LXe6ZzmMfaipnwu Caution: I bought the 50 feet ropes and they are long and heavy so make sure you have the space (I do have the space). If I was to do it again I would probably get a shorter version as 50 feet (25 feet each side) is a little long.

Happy Birthday Jeff. Always doing great work! My question is: Is it ok to workout more than once a day and if so how many hours apart? Sometimes I like to workout once in the morning and then early in the evening. Do I need extra rest days? Would I need to take extra supplement? Should it be weight lifting and cardio? So many questions...

Hey Jeff, I absolutely love your videos and how you put the science behind all your explanations. I'm 15, and I play football buy for all my.life I've been a hard gainer. I'm frequently told I'm too weak to play but I'm trying to change that, which im doing by watching your videos. I'm not going to give up but I don't have the means or resources to all the supplements and protein powders that many others do. I don't have access to a gym which limits me to bodyweight workouts which I recently started, but I was just wondering if I would still be able to make muscle gains as efficiently if I can only eat some protein filled foods as a source, which I do often. I'm not ready to give up, but I was just curious to see if I'd still be able to make muscle gains efficiently.

I think that hiking is a great form of exercise on non training days. I'll strap on a 50lb weight vest and just go hit the trails keeping a brisk walk on the various hills, etc.. Not only do I burn a TON of cals doing this, but it also helps with recovery from my training days 3x per week.

I would like to see your routine BEFORE and AFTER workout, how to properly warm up and how to stretch before we go to the heavy steel (which exercises and how much time). And then what do you do after the workout, do you cool down, stretch, or just drink recovery shake and hit the sofa? I am 39.5 y.o. and much more damaged/hurting joints than good ones :)

Happy Birthday Jeff... I do have one question... I am a firm believer in all that you're doing and purchased a couple of the different Athlean-x Programs. I have had to stop doing it though because my knees, which I've had three surgeries on, just couldn't take the pounding. I want to continue using the program because I was enjoying it, but how can I modify the program so as to not further do damage to my knees? There've been a couple of occasions where my shoulders, which I've also had three surgeries on in the past, have gotten tweaked as well, though not NEARLY as much as my knees. I love the program. I truly do. I just want to figure out a way to do it without messing myself up any further.

battle ropes explained and a few routines would be good. Had them in my gym for a while but they've been mostly overlooked

Hey Jeff I have recently learned that test days are really important . I am just not sure how to take them .. I have a four day program for the week and was wondering if it would be better to have all my rest days in a row ( Friday , Saturday and Sunday ) or have a break between ever gym session ? I love your channel and will definitely incorporating some of these workouts on my off days .

Hi Jeff. Your concepts and approaches make sense. Train hard and rest hard. I find that getting good sleep is essential. I find that at least for me good sleep 8 hrs will guarantee a good work out. Ps i have been trying some of your workouts . I have been having some positive outcomes. Dr Rob . DPT

Thanks for confirming that you can train 7 days a week for fat loss as long as it's conditioning. I usually do 5 min jog + 6 pack shuffle targeting either lower abs or obliques on off days. That's in addition to my AX-1 plan.

Very helpful, I am trying to gain mass but I find it hard to take a day off and do nothing. The medicine ball slam and ab work may be the way for me to go on off days if I feel compelled to do something. Or just taking a walk.

Do I need a rest day if my split allows each muscle group 3 days before it’s hit again. Day 1. Pull (without shoulders) 2. Push (without shoulders) 3. Shoulders 4. Legs Then repeat. I definitely do not like rest days. I love hitting the gym every day. My goals are bodybuilding but also to look lean and be athletic, so I love these Athlean X videos. I try to workout as hard and as smart as possible! I would love more info than just a simple “yes” or “no” thank you so much! Look forward to your answer as well as whatever videos you post next.

Sometimes my rest days are just that. I have a couple of injuries...But I will add riding my recumbent bike and abs on those rest days. Great advice.

Hey Jeff, could you do a video about the effects of smoking, drinking and drugs on muscle gains? I know, and everyone knows, that it's obviously better to not do any of these but what the actual effects are for some might be a little vague. Thanks for the videos, you're helping me out a lot!
