My anxiety absolutely KILLS my enthusiasm to go out. It's debilitating. I have considered some sort of "Box for everything" approach but it just does not help. Stumbling across your video (searching for ways to decrease my pack size) has shown me I need to take it a step further if I am to get out and do what it is I want to do. Separate further! Why didn't I think of this?! A box and place for every part of my kit! Thank you for doing this video, it's so good to see other Men acknowledging and sharing their Anxiety driven issues and in turn helping folks like me see we're not alone. I struggle so much and all I want to do is go out and enjoy the outdoors. Sorry for the long-winded waffle.

Thanks so much for firstly opening up and secondly searching for a fix. This is exactly the reason I made it. It honestly nearly stopped me wild camping cause every time I wanted to get out invited stress into my life. Please put some time into fixing this, "for you".. cause fixing this, will get you out and getting out will fix you. That's the way I look at it. Well done mate. Please keep me up to date on your progress and need any help please let me know. Get a charging box and in the box keep your charging cable with it. This way you can hammer out all charging quickly and stress free. Thanks for the comment. Appreciate it 👍😁

I have my 25L daypack always setup and packed. This has come from experience of what I’ve needed. This daypack is a grab and go plus anything else I need. It’s also a 2 day survival pack. For a longer camp the contents are moved to a bigger rucksack and stuff added but I always repack the daypack the same way. I know exactly what I have and where things are. I also keep a plastic box in the car with extras and double cooking setups and things. The only things stored are sleeping bags and tents.

I've done the same as you, bought a 3 tier shelving unit and labelled plastic boxes. It works but I've no stress as I know where everything is and just take what I need in my backpack the night before 👍

I have similar triggers - I delay my trips a lot, because of the worry. Put it off, put it off, etc, etc. I need this piece of gear...it's going to take X days to arrive...wait...oh the weather has changed...etc. It's less packing, although that's stressful, more worry about the trip, I prevaricate so much. I have a spreadsheet I used last time, it helped.

Its not just you! Another tip is at the new year, review your stuff. If you've not used something in the last year give it away to a friend or homeless person or sell it. Less stuff helps with choice for me. Good tips :)

Mate, I'm gearing up for my first wild camp, I've been looking at fine print specs, testing stoves in the kitchen, practising menus (I don't do rehydrated meals, I used to be a bloody chef), etc etc. I've spent six months dithering about tents (and when I do eventually decide on one I'll spend weeks setting it up and breaking it down in the garden! On Facebook I was told to "just get out there" but some of us are not wired up that way!

I hear you mate. Once we go down those rabbit holes it gets stressful.. thanks for sharing. It's all about what works on the trail and this is something you only learn on the trail.. regarding food, only reason I use dehydrated meals is weight.. it's all about the weight of your pack. If I were you man, pick a camp site and pack your car with your gear. It will come natural when you start using the stuff.. I made so so many mistakes buying gear and changed it all up when I started hitting the trail.. fully agree that we are all wired different. Happy to help you in any way I can. I don't have nearly as much gear as you but I like to be packed 2 or 3 days before, makes me feel calmer about it but because I have less gear, the stuff I use all stays in 1 bag so I take that out and then depending what I'm doing I take stuff out or add clothes and its pretty much done

OK Martin, hope you are doing well and are destressed. I hear you barking big dog! What I did was I started treating all the gear I had accumulated over time, like clothing. If I didn't use an item for say, 2 years, I got rid of it like an old shirt etc. Now I culled so much, I have very little left and so what I have is my go to. Happy out now lad! By the way, I'm still waiting on that stainless steel burner from ya 😅. Thank for the video Martin. Very relevant....

This system you have is my ambition. Brilliant approach and thanks for sharing! I love the laminated list. I have some of my camping stuff in boxes, but I have to finish tidying up all the gear. And not only that! I would say, tidy/sort it in such a way that is simple and functional, without ending up looking for things or misplacing them or whatever... You know, like when you reorganise some items thinking the new organisation is better, but then you can't find anything anymore :D

Thanks Sara. I needed to do this for my head. The process was stressing so I had to fix it. It really works well. From hours of stress and panic to 1 hour packing. Keep me posted on your packing journey. Good on you. 🙂💪

@@soletrail Thank You, Martin. I like your style and how genuine you are. The bit in the video you mention thinking about scenarios and cooksets... I've done that too 😇 I'm trying to simplify the whole process, otherwise the thinking and planning etc will take longer than hiking and camping, haha! Over time, testing kits has helped because now I know what I will most likely always pack for certain trips (and what I've rarely used! I suppose donating unused items could help too) The next step will probably be having "sets", a bit like the one you mentioned for wild camping, once you come back all goes in that box. The easier the better or my head with explode 😂

@@SaraBurbi thank you for the kind words 😊 appreciate that. With the wondering mind I have I need to have a simple focus. 😂 I know my limits. 8m the kid that if a butterfly went past me I was following it 😅 so glad you got some ideas from the set up. Like you said, the packing was longer than the adventure. The best change for me was having the wild camping boxes. Even if everything else was organised... Have the wild camping boxes that you unload your gear into. Use the organising boxes just for swapping out stuff. Keep it simple. Excited for you. 💪😊

Thanks for the video. I know that feeling. I have a similar bin setup. In my case, I believe my anxiety comes from having too much stuff. With so many choices comes the fear of bringing the wrong item. I’d love to be able to make due, and just adjust as needed, with one stove, one sleep bag, one sleep pad, one tent, one pack

Martin, I have a teo page checklist, one for a day hike and one for a wild camp. And my stuff right now is spread all over my office!!!! I have been looking at shelving and cupboards to get it all in order but as part of the checklist it has reminders that cant be ticked off until complete including charging batteries, cameras, mics, battery packs and torches. So much to remember and nothing worse than reaching the trail head to realise you've forgotten something! Important video pal. Thank you.

Great to see you're setup in more detail Martin 👌 You showed me photos months ago and I was finally inspired a few weeks ago to declutter all the cheap or worn out crap I never use and to properly organise the stuff I do into boxes and bins. I really like the big bins that you use at the end of a camp or hike. I find it hard to motivate myself to empty the bag after I'm done but this makes it so much easier and also makes the repack much simpler for next time 👍

That is crazy the amount of gear you have but wild Camping is what you loves doing and arranging the equipment in the right order is Such a great idea...as you know i just hike Climb a mountain and back to the Car and home But my hiking bag is organised two day's before i go...example,,yellow Viz,,two Flash lights,,two hats,,gloves,,Cheap rain gear,,three T.shirts,,,two Phone's,,,Solar Charger,,Two bottles of Water and one can of beer 😂,,,Sandwiches and protein bars,,,,all that For 6hr hike 😁...its a good addiction you have and the organising Shows how much you love what your doing and 100% there's other men and women doing the same....Apologies for the long Comment and i hope it makes sense

My issue is actually committing to a wild camp. I feel like I constantly need one or two items to perfect my kit but this is nonsense. I do get out but I don't make the most of my opportunities. This isn't just to do with camping. I procrastinate my way through life.

Absolutely understand. It's all anxiety based I'd say. But it's all about getting over the hurdle of getting out the door. The second I hit the carpark it all makes sense but yes.. I share your thoughts... Your not alone pal 🙂💪👏

No I don't have that triggered issue . I also start packing about Wednesday for the weekend .drag out my list of stuff I may need and adapt it . I do different type of camps with people in different places so my kit changes virtually every time I have enough stuff .but it doesn't wind me up Just the opposite I really enjoy buying new kit to fill an eventuality and then using it in that setting. I bought a big 3man tent incase a friend and his kids wanted to come .so since I had the tent the invite went out and we had a great dartmoor camp . You do seem to have a LOT of kit though.

It's great you get excited about it. It's all part of the fun. Yep I have a lot of gear and get sent gear weekly by companies so yes I agree.. I have a lot of gear. I got 3 pieces of kit in the door this week 🤣

It may be that your need to record for utube is taking away from the enjoyment of the camp and the planning prep before it. The need to get the vid right while showcasing new /different kit .For me wild camping is a means to spend time with those I love in new places, that only camping over night can get me to . Don't loose sight of the reason you do it . As soon as your hobby becomes a job it becomes a chore .

Not sure if I have triggers but I also start sorting my gear on Wednesday lol but it's just exciting and I lay it out so then Friday night I can pack it all but I only have 2 main sets of kit 3 season and winter.the shoulder seasons can be tricky to pack for but I always go warmer easier to vent than warm up.i have boxes for gear but could your triggers be because you have 2 much choice or maybe just dial in a 3 season and a winter season ??

Thanks for the comment. Yes I have a lot of gear.. collected and sent to me. Havings so much has created this beast 🤣 but I have learned to organise better. Being a KZfaqr I love to show case different gear all the time. It's fun to test out gear. I get sent gear weekly so it does build up. Dialing is a 3 season and 4 season is a great idea thanks. 😊

Not a bad effort but you could improve things for yourself a lot more. Research Kaizen and 8 types of waste and the five S's. My bag is always ready. KZfaq hikers/wildcampers just collect gear which takes away from the fun. You only need 1 of everything. Sometimes distance and weather will have you switch a couple of things. But there's no need for a warehouse of gear. No offence.
@soletrail
@soletrail 10 ай бұрын
No offense taken at all 😊 appreciate the comment. Agree with you that I have a lot of gear which was a big part of it. I would love to have just one set up I use again and again but being a KZfaqr I get sent a lot of gear. Also for some people experimenting with different set ups is all part and parcel of the experience of wild camping. I like to show case different set ups on different adventures. To do that I need to have different set ups. But yes a lot of gear creates headaches but happy to say not anymore. Appreciate the comment. 👍😊
