Do We Buy a Remote, Off-Grid, Water Access, Cabin? Heavy Wind, Wet Boating & Campfire Roasted Tongue
@ToriGoesOutside and I basically pick up from where we left things off on our NatGeo show “Home in the Wild” when we set out to visit a remote, off-grid water access cabin on a large lake in Northern Ontario. Our plans are momentarily halted by strong winds, reaching speeds of 68kmph, making the waves too turbulent for safe travel on our boat. While waiting for the weather to calm, we enjoy some family games before deciding to explore the lake's conditions, only to be met with challenging waves and wind-driven spray, prompting us to return to shore. We find refuge in a simple campsite at the edge of a gravel parking lot nestled in the wilderness, where we gather around a campfire to savor roasted bison tongue and homemade s'mores, creating cherished memories amidst the tranquility of the evening.
The next day, we brave the waters once more on a 21km boat journey to reach the cabin, revealing its rustic condition and lack of modern conveniences such as running water and a proper washroom. Contemplating the prospect of purchasing the cabin, we reflect on the joys and challenges of off-grid living in this secluded haven. Join us on this authentic exploration of remote living and family bonding in the serene wilderness of Northern Ontario, as we navigate the uncertainties and possibilities that lie ahead. Follow our journey as we navigate the decisions that await us and the experiences that unfold in this captivating narrative of nature, family, and the allure of off-grid living.

I love the couples “bickering” that you leave in the video! Brings back memories to when my (very clingy) son was a toddler and a mommy’s boy and daddy would say he wasn’t going to be tough enough! Fast forward to him as a senior in high school (now 18) and he’s my husbands buddy and mom is just his favorite cook. So funny how I miss those days but am glad he’s become close to both parents, who are both sad he is leaving for college. 😢 Thank goodness for grandkids! Thank you for the memories!💕

My parents used to cook cow's tongue. Mom skinned it, sliced it thin and then sauteed it with tomatoes, bell peppers and onions. Give that a try next time. It will be really tender and the veggies make it much more palatable. They used to buy a half cow and it came with it. We were as skeptical as you about eating it but it's not half bad.

Side note, loved the bit with the bison tongue. I'm a chef and my in-laws buy a butchered cow every year and I've convinced them to get all the "nasty bits" and pass them along to me (heart, liver, tongue, bones, etc.).

You should buy the cabin. That said, the tongue grossed me out. My mother used to buy that kind of stuff and cook it; beef tongue, brains (arrgghhh) and tripe. She never made us eat it though, And we never did. I think I tasted the tongue once and that was it. Wesley is so cute with his little pug nose. Huddy liked the toasted marshmallow.Great idea to stuff the chocolate into the toasted marshmallow, Jim. I'll try that sometime. Buy the cabin.

Seems like a perfect Baird kind of cabin as it has to include a bit of an adventure just to get there. :) I am sure if it's meant to be it will work out for you guys! The property looks wonderful... the best part is the closeness of the neighbors, 😉but it's not worth it if you have to drop 30k into it. There are more ideal spots to be found. Like off grid remote, but still within distance for family to visit, maybe even without having to stay for a week or so. Also, it is 23 miles by boat, not to mention the car ride to get there... what will you do if there was a medical emergency with one of the kids, especially Wesley?

Hi Baird's!! Ok, another fun one but you kinda lost me on the Bison tongue 🤢 The cabin property is exciting! Totally see the pros and cons and we talk about the same issues as we contemplate a retirement home lake side in ME. Fixer upper or move in ready? More remote or a bit closer to civilization? The farther north, less expensive etc. It's a lot to think about but it all comes down to the property/location itself, right? Everything else can be worked on/personalized to your needs and specs, and visitors/family will enjoy quality time for a bit longer vs. quick stay. Best of luck with this decision and can't wait for the next one! 💜 Barret

I haven't been there where you are at but I would keep looking. Tori is probably the most indifferent between you two. So I think her decision would be most practical. She is less excited and more prudent. You can't let your desires take over. You will be glad in the end if you do your homework and find the diamond in the rough. Good luck to you and your family. You can't buy the first place you see, unless that's the first place you let us see. You should have lots of options within 3 or 4 hours of where you live. I see a series developing and rightly so.

My opinion is the negatives outweigh the positives. I believe I heard both of you list more reasons not to buy it than to buy it. Good video guys👍

Hallo, I wasn't flashed by that. If another one is closer, but twice as expensive, it will remain twice as expensive in the future. That means half off, but also, if you can afford it, more than twice as valuable. And you can get to town, the doctor, etc. faster. But that didn't convince me, the costs for the renovation work are also more expensive... because the distance is longer... but on the other hand, you can save the money and develop an individual property. No idea how much ground is involved. Is it yours then? Just look at a few, then you get a feel for it.... you'll do it right... God protect you Greetings Goldprospecting with Tom
