Do We REALLY Need 10k Steps Per Day?

Everyone seems to obsess over getting ten thousand steps per day. If you have a Fitbit it actually does a little party on your wrist when you hit 10k steps.
We read some recent research published this year in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology that said walking just shy of 4K steps per day or roughly two miles-can reduce your risk of dying from any cause.
The risk of dying decreases the more you walk. And increase of 1k steps per day (10 minutes of walking) was associated with a 15% reduction of dying from any cause; an increase of 500 steps per day was linked to a 7% reduction in dying from cardiovascular disease.
So if you don’t get 10k steps per day-you are NOT failing! How many of you shoot for 10k steps?
We challenge you to start or continue walking. It is one of the BEST things we can do for our health.
Thanks for joining us for our Coffee Talk ☕️

I’m a crossing guard in Canada and do about 22,000 steps daily. I walk back and forth to work wearing multi layers often in the winter. Some days when there is a wind chill of -30degrees celcious, I get home and my 3 shirts are drenched with sweat. I love crossing the kids and get great health benefits

I recently saw that same study. Always questioned 10k steps anyway. Every little bit helps and adds up over time. The important thing is do what you can, build up when you can and just start. Walking and swimming are low impact and something most anybody can do. I can definitely relate to the forcing myself to do it. I do feel much better during the day and week when I do a little exercise during the week. Helps with appetite, I get better sleep at night and just generally feel better overall. Steve

We had always questioned it as well. This study just proves common sense that any amount of exercise you get is beneficial for better health.

Hey 👋 Keith & Terri, Having interests is important, something to occupy your day. Steps will happen. We watch our granddog for months at a time. When Wally is with us, I get over 10,000 steps a day. Otherwise, the steps accumulate as I wear a patch to the refrigerator or snack pantry. But seriously, here in Lewes we have beaches and a beautiful downtown. We love it. We get moving. You’re right, sitting sedentary is not good. Stay active, stay healthy. Great advice, thanks! ☕️ 🎉

This is a great reminder. We have sedentary jobs but it is important to make time for walking to stay healthy. It was interesting to hear how walking lowers the risk of death from all causes. That is great news. It is easy enough to get 4K steps (and more!) if we prioritize it. Thanks for sharing this information with us!

Today I walked 14,651 steps. I just crossed the 10km mark. I went to visit a friend. It was lovely weather and I thought- let's just leave the car at home. Yesterday I Barely managed 6000. It really is what feels comfortable. I have my watch set for 40 minutes training. That can be anything - I Love walking. So I try daily to walk 45 minutes at a reasonable pace. I walk on average 11 minutes per 1 km. Not counting the house-garden short distances. That 45 minutes is my 'extra for fitness'. Have a lovely week. Greetings from New Zealand. 👌😎🙋‍♀🥝

Good to hear this. My goal is 7,000 steps a day. I wear a step counter to measure my steps. Walking and Pilates are my go to for exercise. We often do our walking at our gym indoor track.

Hey Keith & Terri. Always good to hear you guys. Very sound advice indeed. No need to stress about numbers just move. I have a very sedentary job now but I now cycle to work and back. Around miles each way. And feel so much better. For years I haven’t looked after myself and really not looked after my Diabetes either. So am having issues now with Neuropathy etc. but main advice is just get some movement in. Thanks for your chat. Always a pleasure to see you both. Take care. 👍🏻🚶🏻‍♂️🚶‍♀️

We don't have a walking routine, Terri and Keith. But, I do try to get us out as often as possible. We also don't walk fast enough because Kathy doesn't like it as much anymore. However, I still think it's important to just keep her moving. As for me I think the treadmill would be a good idea! (don't have one now) Driving the car and spending time on YT are good for me mentally, but aren't accomplishing much physically. 🤣🤣

It sure seem like you guys are always on the move. We love our treadmill be neither of us like to walk outside when it’s too cold so it helps us a lot. Staying healthy mentally is important as well. Have a great week!

When I was working hard to lose weight, I tried to hit 10k steps a day whenever possible. 6k worked too. The key was just to move often. I also did lots of steps. I can tell you I did lose weight but I also started having hip problems from so many sets of stairs.
