Love the start of this video the raw unedited bit with all the bloopers. Really nice to watch the process and two guys who really enjoy what they are doing. Edited stuff is great but I’d personally like to see the more lighthearted videos. After all no one is perfect so why should a video be?

I recently coated 3 of my alloys (weather got too cold to do the other one) with C5 ceramic coating and can notice a massive difference when cleaning, most of the brake dust comes off with the pressure washer and only need to use shampoo. The other alloy not coated needs a lot more products and work to get to the same level. So I highly recommend ceramic coatings.

Hi Jon.....nice review! I use the same Poorboys wheel sealant. There is no doubt it attracts more dirt than an unwaxed alloy. However, the box does recommend applying multiple layers and I also reckon 500 miles worth of dirt wont prove too much difference and is not where this product will shine. For someone like me doing that in a week with a lot of countryside driving, I clean mines every 1000 miles or so with a lot of caked on dirt. It then proves to be very effective. Im sure you've made up your mind of the sealant regardless but thought id point out these points. Many thanks

Hi John I have treated my Skoda Superb's alloys (winter & summer sets) with Fusso Coat by Soft 99. So far (after nearly a year) it seems to keep them slightly cleaner and make cleaning much easier. I'm going to do my MX-5 wheels next. Good video! Nice to see you having fun! All the best, Rob in Switzerland.

fusso does seem to work well as a wheel sealant. I was worried about the fact its parrafin wax based which has a low melting point. but In reality when Ive used it on alloys its worked really well.

I like to use CarPro HydrO2 Lite on my wheels. It's easy to apply and lasts long enough for me. I just spray it on and use a pressure washer to rinse it off. In the past I used Chemical Guys Wheel Guard and also their Jet Seal but that takes more time. Thanks for the great videos!

I used FK1000p on my winter wheels. As far as dirt repellency is concerned I agree with you. They did look a bit more shiny though but they are grey painted so it probably has more effect on there. I pretty much just did it as a bit of a protection against salt, not comfortable doing ceramic as of yet :)

I have used Poorboys and it's really good. However, for how quick it goes on with a microfibre applicator, I often just use Collinite 845 insulator wax. That helps protect the GTechniq C5 wheel armour below!

Should be a sealer to protect it from corrosion and any such debris as break dust to stain the wheel. Basically a kinda ceramic coating that protects wheels but won’t last as long as ceramic coating

Ive been using the poorboys wheel wax for quite a while now and yes it does not repel dirt it acts more like a layer for the crap to stick to in my opinion, i myself will put the first coat on and allow 20mins for this to cure, then i will put another coat on each wheel, returning to the first and then buff them off, i think 5 washers is an average time this lasts..and i only need to use a decent shampoo and no other chemicals to bring them back to decent...cheers for the paper sponge...ya never know....it might become the next best thing lol.

If you care about your wheels then just wash them every week and if you don't have the time or it's too cold take the car to a jet wash spray some valet pro bilberry wheel cleaner on and blast the wheels, takes minutes, thats what I do anyway, can't be doing with spending all that time and effort anymore on my knees prepping and waxing my wheels. Loving the videos John, keep them coming 👍

thats kind of what I do. but I think you gotta get the old barrel brushes and contact clean the faces out unfortunetly. since coating the 135 though you can sort of almost do what you said above but I think perioducally you would need to contact clean.. your right though its such as ball ache taking alloys off. totally hate it. :(

I am using this poorboys wheel wax at the moment on my black RS alloys after taking the wheels off full decontaminating and applying the wax 6 weeks later I have noticed that it seems to attract more dirt and the wheels generally look dirtier than before I started using it, it's as if there seems to be static on the rim now attracting the dirt. I always like to take my wheels off once a month anyway to clean them and have noticed like yourself that they don't seem any difference in the way the dirt comes off. Once I have used this up I don't think I will bother getting anymore🤔

Happy new year, Jon. I've not used a wheel wax before, but Ihave used a combination of Autoglym SRP and EGP on the alloys. It really made them pop, and it made it a lot easier to clean, the majority of it came off with a pressure washer, something that wasn't the case before I used that combo.

You can use any Hi grade wax on painted wheels and most alloy wheels or mags have a protection coating from the factory, which is a hard clear base and over time without washing those alloy rims or chrome looking alloys you will notice that they go a little yellow, which is that clear going yellow from the sun, i dont think you will notice it in England's weather ,but going down south like say Australia and other HI TEMP summer type countries you will notice the alloy chrome type rims going yellow ?

I guess these waxes aren't worth using on powder coated wheels. I bet it would be worth using an bare aluminium or chrome finished wheels. As a pro tip, if you want to reduce the build up of brake dust on your wheels, swap your brake pads to ceramic brake pads! You should get a much lower build up of dust on the wheels although this is slightly more expensive than buying a £15 tub of wax... Great vid as always Jon.

Great topic. Thanks for being honest, I can't see how people pretend like wheel waxes make a massive difference. I refurbished my alloys about a year ago, I waxed them using FK1000P (high temp paste wax) before having tyres mounted on them and I also noticed they attract brake dust more initially. This stuff does indeed last, I used some aggressive wheel cleaners and even after a track day and a few thousand miles it was still beading on the alloys. I don't think I'll do them again anytime soon though, maybe once a year or when I get new tyres, as I like to take the wheels off the car myself and take them to the tyre garage - yeah that seems like the best time to do it.

Fun video this one Jon! I came to the same conclusion with waxes for wheels. Tried out mint rims from AF and found it wasn't worth the effort. Since moved onto sealants and have found the right balance in wowo's crystal sealant. Mist on, spread over the wheel and buff. Single coat is good for 7-9 months doing 300 miles per week, can wet coat apply it during drying to boost protection every few months if you like also 😊

I am definitely trying a ceramic coating next season on my Alloys. Tried wheel waxes before e.g. Swissvax, Angelwax and some others and always had the feeling that it build up more breakdust than without. Also after a decent cleaning with a brush and acid-free breakdust remover most of the waxes were gone, so I am looking forward to try that wheel armour next time.

I’m not a coating person but for wheels I think its great, IMO the wax just gives abit of water beading, that’s it, I find regular cleaning is the best, I’m currently using ONR as my wheel cleaner in a spray bottle, seems to be doing a nice job.

Fit ATE Ceramic pads. Problem solved :-) Massive reduction in the amount of dust! The dust they do produce doesn't stick and bond, it's easy to wash off. Compared to Genuine BMW pads the braking performance for street use is similar - with the added benefit of a more firm pedal because the ceramic material is less compressible. Very linear response. "Spiritted" driving doesn't end in fade either, they handle heat well. I don't know about track performance though. I expect the biggest problem would be accelerated wear.

Going to reapply next week, cheers guys keep it up. 👍🏻

I ceramic coated my wheels in March and they’ve been brilliant, much easier to clean. I washed last week and thought I would spray some turtle wax hybrid ceramic on top to give them a bit of extra protection and shine. I noticed a real difference in extra break dust after just a short drive. Almost like the break dust was sticking to the turtle wax wax. I won’t be putting any other treatment on top now just once a year around March/April, wheels off full decon and ceramic coat.

When thoroughly clean I just wax my wheels with the same wax i put on the bodywork, the results are just as good if not better than dedicated wheel waxes so I don't u derstand why they exist, the lustre is deep and shiny and tar and fallout tends to stick less. But I hate removing the wheels more than once a year max, if you use wheel cleaner it immediately strips either off at the first clean, so it's not great either way, while I have the wheels off this time I think I'll hit them with sonax bsd

wheel areas can be like ovens.. especially on performance cars.. organic waxes typically have melting points of around 60 deg to 75 deg.. so main problem why some organic paste waxes might not be great is they will simply melt and erode away. So a proper wheel wax should use a inorganic wax that can withstand high temps.. And example of this would be FK1000p for example.

You’d have got better results with FK1000P rather than the Poorboys stuff. I never bothered with any protection for years as it’s so time consuming plus even a diluted wheel cleaner will strip whatever’s on there. My wheels as is the car, are cleaned weekly without fail and so they always clean up with ease. As you said, if I was going to to a wheels off full monty, I’d put a coating on. What I do with my wheels these days is use a wet coat type of sealant. I’ve used Gyeon Wetcoat and Infinity Wax Express Sealant. The Spray on, jet wash off method is ideal for wheels and quick. I just top up every couple of weeks.

Rewatching videos, this is so funny. Paper Sponge lol. So good you should do more like this 🤣😄. I think sealants and wax do help but like you say ceramic is better. Smart wax rim wax is slightly better than poor boys. Or just a good wax or sealant like sonax BSD helps. My wheel are defiantly dirtier with a wax it seems to attack dust but slightly easier to clean.

I use this wheel wax but I have raw polished alloys so I keep on top of it as any water left on the raw material over time would leave major water spots, do you have any recommendations for a show wax on a black that’s easy to work with?

What's your opinion please on using either Meguiar's hybrid ceramic spray wax or Autoglym wheel protector? Are they worthwhile, and do you think you could get almost 3 months protection from one application of either of these?

i would go with a ceramic. even ceramic coatings get stripped out the barrels rapidly... The alloy wheel on a car is harsh rough environment its like an oven sometimes thats having hot brake dust particles fired at it constantly... These microscopic layers of protection products cant really do much...

What was the first brush you used when you started cleaning the back of the spokes? I like the look of it. Also just to add a comment regarding the benefits of wheel wax, poorboys was the first I ever tried and thought it was pretty pants to be honest, I then moved on to angelwax bilberry which in my opinion did a pretty good job in terms of the finish on the wheel and how well it protected the wheels. Certainly made them easier to clean and also very hydrophobic for a good while. I have since moved onto ceramic coating for wheels though and will be definitely be sticking with these products from now on, not much more effort needed than applying a wax but miles better in terms of protection. Anyway, great video and more of you and reg together in the future. Always gives me a giggle.

Curious, how would it have changed if you did two light coats. Also, if one were doing simple and quick spray/rinse without mechanical agitation, would there be a difference in cleanliness....hmm. I'll have to try it and find out :) (or you do it! haha)

As a review of Poorboys Wheel Wax I think this video is a good one, BUT, with a title of "Do wheel waxes do anything?" I think its an unfair judgement of a whole category of products. I doubt you would judge every wax dedicated to paintwork after using Nattys Paste Wax... Also, using a ceramic coating is always going to be the best choice but there are factors there that may stop people from choosing them, the time the wheels have to stay off the car after application (not everyone can have the wheels off their cars for 12 - 24hrs) and the price of a ceramic coating compared to the price of a 100ml pot of wheel wax (15ml of Gtech C5 will set you back around £23, whereas a pot of wax is going to be around £10) and also the stigma that is associated with coatings and the experience needed to apply them, mess up the removal of a ceramic coating and you're going to need to machine polish the wheels to remove it, mess up the removal of a wax and, well thinking about it is that even possible? You may have to buff harder I suppose. All that said I use TDG Raspberry Wheel Sealant and find it immensely easier to wash the wheels once they've been sealed and keeping the wheels protected is as easy as simply spraying the product on to a clean, wet alloy and rinsing off.

these are all good points Michael. but I did also make most of these points in the video. Minus the one about ceramics being harder to apply. The thing that counters this is to apply a sealant to all the alloy wheel properly. wheel needs to come off and get deep cleaned and decon'd.. Thats the ball ache part. Really once you have done that putting a ceramic coating on an alloy is not that hard. you could even do it out side on a weekend with clear weather if you got yourself organised. Im just kind of leaning towards that way of thinking with alloys nowadays. but yer there are pro's and cons and you give a good balanced view there. cheers.

would you say that ceramic coatings have similar, better, or worse results?

better.. I dont personally think waxes can repell dirt.. I think waxes help bonded contaminants sticking to the surface of the alloys. but a coating of wax on a wheel just doesnt seem to really offer that much for me. ceramics though do repell dirt. They do make the alloys easier to clean. they also hold onto their repellency characteristics longer and are a harder, more durable chemical generally.. on alloys i personally think ceramics are the way to go.. not all will share that view. I was really impressed with Gtech C5, check out the video on the channel of it.

Nice video about wheel protection and also very easy to follow. I'd like to inquire a couple questions that came up. What kind of a ceramic coating would be ideal for alloy wheels, I'm looking at something like Gtechnic wheel armour or Gyeon q2 rim if you have any idea if those could work well as a ceramic coating with a dust/dirt repellancy? At the moment I have Obsession wax wheel wax and I'm not very happy with the protection it gives me at the moment especially in terms of easier cleaning and reducing dirt on wheels. Also interested in hearing whether wheel wax or ceramic coatings can withstand full out chemical decontamination of the wheels with iron/fallout removers followed agitation with stronger wheel shampoos? At least to me it would seem like the wax would get removed quite quickly by chemical decontamination.

I dont think you can beat a ceramic coating for alloy wheel protection.. anything else just doesnt seem to be able to hold up for the abuse it get from having brake dust fired at it when you use the car.. I had really good results from G techniq C5 wheel armour. I might be checking out q2 rim soon so stay tuned... they can withstand fallout removers yer.. and generally stronger detergents, but thats a vague statement does depend what your throwing at the coating.. but honestly give alloy ceramics a whirl.. theres nothing out there better.
