THE ORIGINS OF THE MEGATRON.... The megatron was a chance buy in some chinese store when I was on holiday... Ive not been able to find it online... Its a nice soft split tip brush that works well on alloy wheels.. but I had to glue a plastic shroud round it. So its not something you can buy online :( If I go back ill order 50 of them and modify them all for detailing use....

Hey John!!!!!! I know this is an old comment, but Since first seeing Megatron, I have been searching for a brush like it on and off. I think its meant to be a Wax or Chalk brush for applying finishes to woodwork. The biggest I have found seems to be 2"-3" but I can't tell from the video what diameter Megatron is. www.royaldesignstudio.com/products/super-large-3-stencil-wax-brush

megatron is like 4-5 inches diameter.. this is no ordinary mortal chalk brush.. forged from the fires of mount dhoom it bends only to the will of its master.. no imitation brushes come close.. its mine, my precious!!! ;)

I've used c5 before and i think it's brilliant! Applied it to my daily about 16 months ago and it's still working great. It makes cleaning alloys so much easier because I can just go over with shampoo and a wash mitt and they come up amazing😁

This is excellent time to watch this video. I removed aluminium wheels from my car and set steal wheels with winter tyres. I will buy new tyres for the summer, so this is great time to apply ceramic coat. I even repaint wheels at the start of this year. Thank you, you are so detailed!

Thanks for this video. It has been extremely helpful. I have purchased new wheels for my BMW so they were clean to start with, but I applied the Belt Hamber Cleanser Fluid as advised and followed up with Gtechniq C5 throughout and then lightly going over with a Gtechniq MF cloth as recommended. Fingers crossed it does the job!

Great video John, love your channel. I trust your advice. I went with a wheel coating on my BMW about 1.5 years ago and it was best decision ever. Made wheel cleaning so much easier. You still have to clean them with more than just a blast of water, but it's an easier job and they look perfect when done. Only way I've ever been able to keep clean BMW wheel barrels. Another tip, go full ceramic brake pads. Cheers from Southern California.

This video got me to subscribe, thanks. I have just added GTECHNIQ EXOv4 to my 8 year old car, mostly as a practice in paint correction and application prior to my new Mustang arriving in 8 weeks. After seeing how good the paint came up, I looked at the rims and thought they need something too, hence finding this video.

Thanks for the detailed info. A good down to earth explanation, no crap or BS. I'm doing my 2018 FK8 Type R wheels which I got back from an Alloy Wheel restorer a few weeks ago because I wanted a better finish on the inside ( not because they had been curbed!) so it's off with the wheels, a soapy wash then a going over with BH Cleanser Fluid before application of C5. I'm hoping this will last a good while and the red Brembo's are getting C5 treated as well. That was a good suggestion to buy more application pads.

I have this on my wheels for the past 8 months and im really impressed with how well it is at repelling dirt, only thing i would say its not the strongest water beading product but not fussed about that. I use snow foam a wheel woolies brush and a detailing brush and the dirt just comes off dont need to use any heavy wheel cleaner.

Another good review John... I personally use the CarPro DLUX product to protect my rims... and they are still going strong today, all I have to use is either surfex hd or bilberry wheel soap to clean and they come up spotless every time! I see so many people using waxes etc which is fine for maintenance, but if you spend the day doing it properly I just don't understand why they don't do use products like this... keep those vids coming John!

John, we must be the same person buddy. I use c5 all the time, and I have no questions its one of the best wheel coatings available. It completely restored a friend of mines old, custom black truck wheels he had. Not only does it add protection, but it can really bring the depth of the wheels chrome or paint to life.

Just applied it to my wheels over the weekend and used this video as a guide. Good advice. I would just add that a 15 ml bottle exactly covered (4) 18" wheels. I was hoping I would have enough for the brake calipers too but there was not enough. I coated both the front and back (inside of the drums.) I would also say that it is easiest to do this job if all 4 wheels are off the job at once. So if you have winter wheels on the car, do it to your summer wheels in the spring just before you change them (and vice versa if you also want to coat your winter wheels)

Just revisited this as I’ve got some C5. Decided to go for it as I’ve just bought two new wheels to replace some marked ones (got a deal on eBay). Before they go on the car, will coat in the living room! That will then only leave me the final two on the car to do on a separate day so not such a nightmare. Of course there’s the hubs callipers and suspension to clean up too so still a big job!

"Start at one point on the alloy". I think you should have said start at the valve as you'll never lose your starting point. I had to revisit this demo after having a wheel recoated (20" Type R) to make sure I did it correctly. Your videos are good, straight to the point, no "BS" and you have the experience (Been there, Done that). Thanks.

my whole car including the wheels are coated with cquartz UK ceramic coating. I find my car so much easier to clean than it was before the coating was applied. It was applied by a professional detailer and the wheels were removed in order to be coated properly. For cleaning the car and wheels I generally just use snow foam and a rinse. If the wheels are overly dirty if I have been on a long motorway journey I will use a ph neutral wheel cleaner then add snow foam on top. I am very pleased with the results I get.

I used C1 on both my 2 car's bodywork plus C4 on the trim (all same product) in 2013 and did it outside. Worked well but was tricky. Need to be inside with great lighting as you said. Never tried the C5 as thought it too labour intensive. I just use a wetcoat type sealant these days on the wheels as they are so easy to use every few weeks. By the way, you were having far too much fun with the latex John!

Excellent as always Jon. As I don't have this sort of facility to apply coating type products I have always used FK1000p on my alloys. No crazy prep required other than cleaning, fallout removal and de-tarring. This gets me 3+ months from a single coat. Recently though I have been trying out Crystal Sealant (little sample I sent) and that has just hit the same 3 months mark but still beading incredibly well. I think 6 months is looking possible with this sealant/ceramic hybrid product, test it out on your wheels if you like! :)

My summer wheels happen to be Durabrite forged coating. Not sure how this coating is done but apparently its part of the wheel forging process. My winter wheels do not have this coating and I've been using FK1000p but getting surprisingly poor results as you mentioned durability falls off quickly. I definitely plan to ceramic coat these winter wheels in spring when they come off!

I used McKee's 37 wheel coating last fall and while it kept the face of the wheels clean, the machined area of the barrel has some pitting. If working on 1 wheel at a time ( Truck ) can the wheel be reinstalled after the coating has been applied ? How long should one wait before putting it back on the vehicle and moving on to the 2nd....3rd....4th wheel ?

Applied c5 today on my new wheels plus calipers, got one side done and like you said it takes a long time if you do it right. Even on my new wheels it took several hours, I find it hard to know how much to put on the pads as its difficult to see where you've been. Methodical is the key thing as you said. I must say I'm not a fan on the application pads, looks like something woman use for removing makeup. Got the 30ml bottle feel I might be using a bit to much product, I have 19inch wheels how many do you think I should be able to coat with this, taking into consideration that all wheels are different?

Hi Jon, hope you don’t mind me picking your brain once again. I’m sending my alloys off to get refurbished next week. Going down the lepsons route as I’ve heard such good reports. Once I get them back and before I put them back on the car I’d love to coat them with C5. I’ve never had alloys done before, so I’m curious what condition they’ll come back in. Could they be in a similar condition to getting paint work on the car, ie have sanding marks, holograms etc? If so, I’ll buy some compound and polish for the job 👍🏼 excellent video btw. if you can clean regulary with something milder like a shampoo - citrus cleaner might be a bit better, I think the fallout removers might be slightley acidic.. some say they dont strip coatings etc but im not 100% sure..

Any idea what effect this would have on black matt finished wheels? I am struggling to find a product that is OK for matt as most say they add some form of shine, again great review, when you get to look at paint sealants would be interested to see what you think of AMMO Reflex combined with AMMO skin, I am finding them really good but they are all I have used so have no bench mark. Cheers Neil

I found it in some shop on holiday, its got soft split fluffy fiber tips like some of the detailing purpose built brushes so its nice and safe but its huge so its does a good job on the aloys... I had to put that white plastic guard round it though to cover the metal shielding underneath..

I have newly painted and clear coated alloy wheels. Should I mount and balance them before applying this coating or should I apply the coating and then mount and balance? Do I need to allow the paint to cure any particular time before applying this coating.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 6 жыл бұрын
hey robert. get them balanced first. get proper high quality weights that are painted. wheel shops will often use cheap steel weights that rot and go rusty. BMW do really nice wheel weights that are painted and wont rot you can see them in this video. let the clearcoat on the alloys full cure off for 1-2 weeks. When you get the guy to balance them if you have them on your car, ask them very politely to be carefully when removing the alloys. sorry to say it but some tyre places whip the wheels off and the barrels can drop on the disk shields and scrap up the finish. Dont apply the coating untill the wheels are balanced is best because the coating can repel the glue for the wheel weights.

Hi, I find your videos really really useful and applicable to real world use and as such I value your view. I am ( was???) absolutely wedded to the C5 coating but now am very concerned about its replacement after its service life of 1 to 2 years. Apparently the product dulls after a few years and should be removed before the replacement is applied. I'm advised that the only way to remove the coating is machine polishing. This is surely very impractical with an intricate wheel. For a car kept long term , I think removal and re coat every few years is extremely scary. I would seriously welcome your experienced view. Thankyou

this material will be gone after 1-2 years Michael. the surface of the allow is constantly getting blasted with abrasive brake dust and stronger cleaners. So really after 2 years. your aim is to do a very very heavy decon on the alloys because they will be plastered in contamination. So clay the crap out of them. And then try and gloss them up with a machine polish.. With yes its a real major paint. Heres the bit thats interesting. If you watch videos you may see professional detailers showing you shots of polishing alloys wheels very carefully and what looks like very intensivly... In reality allow wheels are a pain to polish and it would be insane to try and treat them like the normal paintwork in terms of perfecting them (they also have rock hard clear typically). so just gloss them up quick and dont spend longer than 15-20 minutes on an alloys polishing it. When you start spending hours polishing an alloy like you see in a video, gotta ask yourself if you might as well just have it refinished for 50 quid. (factor in your time cost of coating etc) Same when you see these 200 hour details being done on cars. thats not really a viable thing to be spending that long as a chargeable service because its only 20 man hours to strip prep and respray the entire car. not all detailing is real. Biggest problem with ceramics dulling the finish is actually around how you buff these products.

Dear Jon, I've just got some brand new rims for my vehicle, and am going to follow your instructions very carefully. Just one question...will applying C5 on new rims hamper (cause an issue) the fitting of weights when balancing the wheel. For example will the weights stick to the C5 or not? Keep up the great work! I would get the alloy balanced first then clean up and apply. in theory the ceramic could interfere with the wheel weight sticking to the barrel.. althought how much of a problem that is in reality I dont know.. when you get the wheel balanced use good quality coated weights like the BMW oem ones you see in this video. a lot of the wheel shops use cheap steel ones and they rot quickly.

I had to make a choice for this video.. I went with this because it was little bit cheaper (although the price always very a tiny bit).. but mainly because of all the good product information Gtechniq put out there.. I like they way their MSDS isnt hidden away, or you dont have to email asking for it.

no.. this is my understanding as always could be wrong but anyway.. so the underlying chemical that a lot of the ceramics use is a patented product that has many applications beyond automotive coatings its produced by a large indian chemical manufacturer.... A company in korea took that coating and formulated a range of ceramic coatings which you could buy.. or you could work with that company for unique tailored versions of it. So I believe a lot of the ceramics are coming from that place in korea. but I think there is another formulator of ceramic coatings as well.. so perhaps 2 root places you can go.. optimum car care are the only ones I know of that had the expertise (in dr david deghoussi) to formulate there own version of a ceramic using silicon carbide, which is different underlying core product from the patented polysilazane resin most of the others use. There are a lot of coatings available now.. some of them may well be the standard array of offerings if you like from the root supplier or suppliers.. I believe Gtechniq are not just using standard offerings but have worked with their supplier to create specific product ranges under the ceramic umbrella. So I think there is more to these products that just the same stuff with different labels, but yes the base chemical resin they use are the same in a lot of them. Could well be wrong on the above but thats my understanding.

Hello, I am hoping to purchase a set of alloy wheels & before they go on the car I would like to apply protective coating to them. Have you made a video SINCE the application on how easy they are to clean?(repelling dirt & brake dust & all other contaminants) Thanks in advance.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 4 жыл бұрын
Yo scott, they become easier to clean once the coating is on.. like for the first few months the dirt flies off with the pressure washer as time goes by the effect like slowly fades. but you should get a good improvement for 6-12 months mate at least.
