Today Randy shows you how to use your Apex for smarter reef tank Carbon and GFO Reactors. How smart you ask? How about notifications when it's time to swap out media? Alerts to tell you that you didn't screw the canister on tight enough? Automated carbon reactors that only turn on when you need them?...And a whole lot more!

Thank you so much for sharing the scheduled Carbon and GFO programming. I was having trouble finding it. BRS's video is awesome.

I have my gfo and carbon turn off for 90 minutes after I feed. My biggest concern is that I’m just guessing on how long to run things and when to change media. I’d love for there to be more objective ways to determine run times and replacement times.

So I've been looking into the vibrant bacteria you've mentioned a bit But in a fresh cycled tank would purple helix and pink fusion work just as well ?
@BRStv
@BRStv 3 жыл бұрын
The two products have different goals in mind. The Vibrant is basically a bacteria product that feeds off of algae. The ARC Reef Helix/Fusion products are coralline bacteria spores aimed at seeding a new tank with coralline algae. I wouldn't use both products at the same time as the Vibrant will hinder the growth of the coralline algae.

Wow so much extra equipment - Which is cool if that's what you're into. While I do use the BRS reactor / media. I just change the carbon and gfo about every 6 weeks knowing the carbon is long done but I don't think having exhausted rox carbon running is a big deal. I could change the carbon more often but just do it when the gfo is exhausted. Then every 10 or so years change the maxijet that is powering it.

@BRStv 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! You can definitely get by without the fancy equipment, but for those who do want the control this is the way I would set it up. :)

Thanks for the video. You still avoided the question :-) What do you recommend as far as running your carbon media? 24/7? Few hours a day? Only off when feeding? Etc..
@BRStv
@BRStv 3 жыл бұрын
You got me there. I didn't give one way or the other, mostly because it's really up to the reefer and how they want to run carbon. Personally, I've switched my carbon from 24/7 to a few hours each day for a couple of reasons. 1) I don't feed expensive foods or additives, so I'm not concerned there. 2) Running a few hours per day means it won't get stagnant and full of gunk between uses, so I can actually extend the life of my carbon to some degree. The last approach I mentioned is more for having carbon on "standby"..ready to use when I feel I need it and then change it out afterwards.

@@BRStv LOL. Thanks for the response. Good points. I will put my pump for my carbon on a timer now. Those Apex ports are precious!

Will only running a reactor for a few hours a day or say two days a week cause a negative impact on ammonia? I ask because I turned off my reactor the other day because it was time to change the media. I wasn’t able to change it for a few days and when I opened it finally whew did it smell bad. Definitely glad I didn’t start it up and pump that into my system.
@BRStv
@BRStv 3 жыл бұрын
I would be less concerned with stagnation using it for a few hours each day. However that recommendation of 1x per week is mainly aimed at having fresh carbon on "standby" where you turn it on for a day when you feel your tank needs it and change it out after it's done. I wouldn't recommend letting it sit for days and trying to use it again.

Ok I bought the pmup,, plugged it into my el apex but nothing popped up on my display in fusion. Do you know why I was not alerted to a new switch in fusion. I checked from a phone

You need to click on the lock symbol on the upper right, and you should be able to pull it down with the rest of the icons you have activated.

It's going to be one of the outlets usually labeled LINKA_#_# or LINKB_#_#. These are the two 24v outlets that every EB832 has. Just toggle one or the other and see which one your PMUP is on. 👍

“Instead of using less carbon in your reactor 24/7.” At minute 5:20 does he perhaps mean more carbon instead of less? If not, then I’m confused.
@BRStv
@BRStv 3 жыл бұрын
I probably could have explained that a bit clearer. Basically, without a controller or timer if you wanted to reduce your carbon approach you would just use less carbon in your reactor, but still run it 24/7. However in this approach you just run it for a few hours per day instead of 24/7.

Correction: At 1:18 you mentioned the "1Link 24 volt outlet" while discussing the 2-pin 24v Accessory port. The 1Link ports are the 4-pin connectors used for Modules such as WAV, DOS, COR15 or Trident. The PMUP connects to the 2-pin 24v "Accessory port".

My concern with running the reactor on a set schedule is the water stagnant inside of it. I do not recommend this.
@BRStv

Definitely true with the 1-2x per week option. That suggestion is mainly for having fresh carbon on "standby" where you turn it on for a day when you feel your tank needs it, then run the program and change it out after it's done. I'm less concerned with stagnation using the few hours a day approach.

The questions BRS should have answered... What chemicals will form in the carbon reactor while its off and what harm will the anoxic water that will exit the reactor after it has been turned on again, do to your reef!?

What makes it worse is I believe turning the flow off on carbon would greatly reduce its lifespan. Might allow biofilm to form on its surface, blocking the pores.

Definitely true, not everything needs to be automated. These videos are more targeted at answering the "IF you wanted to do XX, then here's how I would do that" rather than a be-all-end-all solution.
