I once heard a TACP describe their job as "When the Army bite off more than they can chew... We help them chew it."

TACP are a bunch of Geardos, who dress like some High Speed Special Squirrels, when they literally just hangout at the TOK all day and occasionally go on Patrol inside of the Army Commander's Vehicle. They walk around like they are some Bad@ss Army Ranger Direct Action Unit. Ugh bunch of Dorks. You would get more useful Combat Advice from a Standard US Army Infantry Grunt then this Hollywood Soldier.

That’s crazy cause as a former Cavalry Scout, we had Army Forward Observers attached to us who were trained in calling Air Force assets as well as Naval assets. Really no need for TACPs.

I was a Combat Control JTAC in the early 90’s. Took me 3 tries to get through the Pipeline. Very rare for them to give a third chance, for that I’m eternally grateful. Anyone thinking of going TACP, Combat Control (recently renamed Special Warfare), PJ.... etc... needs to know a few things. First, after successfully making it through the pipeline, you WILL spend the majority of your career assigned to the Army. A few will spend time with Naval Special Warfare (SEALs)... You better like working out and pushing yourself, twice a day, 6 days a week. The pipeline seems daunting, but it’s 97% mental. You have to be less Rambo and more Energizer Bunny (fellow AFSOCOM vets will understand what that means). If you make it, it’s the best job in the world!

DGAMER 14 There is always a chance of getting killed but it’s not as common today especially since we aren’t in any majors wars right now and considering the fact, wars are changing drastically. If it was 2010 I’d say your chances of dying were definitely higher.

I was a TACP (275X0)back in 1981, school was at Hurlburt Field, FL. Great place for training. I vividly recall SSGT Doug Tillman, he was an awesome instructor. I remember on more than one occasion him telling me to drop for 100 pushups. LOL There were definitely some fun times in that job. I cross trained into Combat Intelligence (201X0) in 1988 and went to tech school at Goodfellow AFB San Angelo Texas then was assigned to a SAC base with ALCMs. When the 1st Gulf War broke out I received a letter from the Air Force saying the Air Force needs come first.....so they pulled me back into a TACP slot and sent me to Kuwait. Never was able to leave the TACP career again. lol

I went to the fire academy there at Goodfellow AFB! The marines there are crazy haha. Glad I went in the winter!

@@gabriellebron9968 I recall one of our guys wearing glasses, so I assume that's still okay. Hearing would have to be pretty good, naturally or with assistance of a hearing aid. Your local AF recruiter can give you the info you need. Good luck.

get a tutor and keep working at it, you’ll get there. watch some land navigation videos. plus, the military will help teach things to you to become a TACP or other field.

No Sam, it’s not. While a TACP can do what a forward observer can do, a forward observer cannot do all a TACP can do. Forward observers are great too, don’t get me wrong.

You have to try out for a special operations slot after you have become a TACP. I know because I was one.

Matthew Touchet I’ve never been a TACP nor do I know any so I could be way off with this, but from what I’ve read, the 17th ASOS is the spec ops group of TACPs that work with other SOF units

Isaac Anderson I’ll give you a tip if you do join the military. Listen to your troops! You’ll gain their respect and they will have your back no matter what. Don’t go in feeling like you’re hot poop because they’ll treat you like shit

They just say its pretty awesome with a smirk. Encourage the people interested to think critically before signing up for a job they only know 20% of, stop romanticizing it.

What a terrible marketing piece for one of the most valiant and critical careers out there. Battlefield Airmen, and TACP in particular, are absolutely required to be in incredible physical condition. What the hell do you think happens in the pipeline to get to the schoolhouse? And you pick a dopey, not-so-mature TACP for your on-camera subject? From my experience years ago in the recruiting process (being turned down for one of the few Reserve slots because I was in my late thirties and not a 20-year-old (and that is exactly what the CO told me!!), despite my successful professional photojournalism career, it is no surprise to me that this is the mediocre, boring, unconvincing quality of work coming from combat camera. "I got a hundred twenty year olds who I can fill this role with who will give me 20 years. Are you really going to you be able to give me 20 years? I can teach anyone how to shoot a camera. I don't need an expert," Combat Camera 1's CO said, verbatim. You start with a CO he's just biding his time to make his 20 and slipping through the cracks, and who sets the bar low, and this is what you get.
