This is why im looking this up sometimes I don’t know if I’m in third or second

This was helpful, like many of your videos. Took my bike out for its maiden voyage today, was too scared to go out of first for a while haha. Eventually forced myself to go into second, and eventually third. Just staying local and in parking lots. Stalled at a couple of stops but quick recovery, thanks to some tips I remembered you giving.

Generally what I do is count in my head what gear I am in like with upshifitng I know once I am out of 1st gear I know I will be in second and 3rd etc same with down shifting but you made it easier for me as I can't be concentrating on what gear I am in as I need to concentrate on the road.

No, you don`t "need" a gear indicator, or any other computer run "driver aids" I have had a few comments saying: If anything goes wrong, you`ll be happy you had them!" However; I have rode bikes with all the modern driver aids, turned on and I felt like I wasn`t in control of my own machine. Perhaps, that`s why I like the older motorcycle as my everyday ride. Less distractions = more smiles per mile! :-)

I'm actually a fan of them honestly. I don't use the one on the zx except to glance at it occasionally, however it is a handy thing to have.

Thanks for the advice man. I'm honestly quite disappointed to the bike that I want to buy bec it doesn't have a gear indicator. But watching your video makes me feel more positive, knowing that the need to feel and understand the bike is what matters. Thanks

Exactly same bro, now I can buy the bike I want without worrying that it doesn't have a gear position indicator

Definitely could do with gear indicator but ok without. Only would like to know when in top gear as I look for to shift up and already in top gear.

I completed my CBT today and ehat got me the most was understanding what gear i was and what gear i needed to be in
@wokeamerica142Ай бұрын
That all depends on the size of the bike and how it's geared... lile some bikes u have to be in 1st when slowing down n turning cuz if ur in 2nd it'll stall whereas some u can be in 2nd or even 3rd and ur fine

Listening to the engine is how I've always done it. Once I finally got an indicator it was really just a cool extra where I could more easily compare speed to engine rpm for giggles. Either way is fine by me.
@sunrisejak270910 ай бұрын
If listening to the engine is your determining factor for shifting gears why have a tach?

What about false neutral? The biggest reason I want a gear indicator is so I know if I shifted from 2 to 1, or from 2 to false neutral. Don't want those awkward moments when you approach traffic lights and not shift down correctly, especially as a beginner rider
@jourdan2047 Жыл бұрын
That’s what I’m scared of sometimes when I shift to second I hit neutral instead but I’ve only done it practicing I haven’t done it out on the road just scared of it actually happening
@Sunesen Жыл бұрын
A gear indicator will not keep you from doing a false neutral. Pretty much all bikes have a neutral light though even if they don't have a gear indicator, usually depicted by a big "N" icon on the dash. If you just want to know if you've hit neutral, then that is the light to look for.
@2m2a2r2k2 Жыл бұрын
@@Sunesen That is true, but if you shift down from second and the light isn't on, you don't know if it's in first or false neutral until let go of the clutch.
@Sunesen Жыл бұрын
@@2m2a2r2k2 But would a gear indicator be able to tell you that you are in a false neutral? Or would it just "lie" to you?
@2m2a2r2k2 Жыл бұрын
@@Sunesen What I experienced so far on mopeds and during my driving lessons is that the gear indicator always turns off when it's in false neutral, otherwise it always shows 1 or N.

I don't think you'd see this, but I have a 2007 yamaha gladiator 125cc bike. The problem with that bike is the first gear is wayyy shorter than the rest of the gears. So if I was rolling to a stop in 20kmph and shift to first my rear wheel slips. What can 1 do
@josecuevas8602 Жыл бұрын
Yes your correct, but... not all (moto) bikes shifter are created equal, there bikes that the shifter won't give you the feel on the up ward shift when you're out of gears. The problem is when the bike is designed that in such a maner that you can't tell on that down shift stroke if you're on first, the shifter just keeps going down [no feed back that you're on 1st. gear] you're forced to find neutral first. This bike is a Honda Shadow Saber VT1100C2, I just purchased and I'm just have to deal with it or sell it & get something else.

According to your demonstration here a tachometer is also an unnecessary function as long as you have hearing? Depending on the gear ratios acceleration can be very different. 4th, 5th, and 6th at lowish speeds can have the rpm low and feeling similar compared with each other. Generally 6th and maybe 5th are mathematically overdrives. Thus acceleration expectations will have huge differences. But the sound look and feel maybe not much different. Do you drop 2 gears or one? Agreed it's not a necessity to know the gear you're in but it is a favorable nicety.

I have a probably stupid question. Let's assume we're riding on the 5th gear and have to stop immediately. Usually we're gonna start again with the 1st gear. How do we know what gear we're in? Technically, I have to gear down 4x while standing to be in the 1st again, is that right? Thanks :)
@NabiLerus Жыл бұрын
Yes that's right, for example that's where the gear indicator helps. When I drove MT07 as a beginner this helped because just like that I had to stop/emergency break because of another driver taking my right of way, and in my panic of quickly downshifting to 1st again so I can move from the crossroads the bike would kinda lock up because I was too quickly trying to downshift while standing still. Then the gear indicator helped because if you rock the bike back and forth it slips back into gear, make sure it's the 1st gear and move on. But of course that happens when you are an inexperienced rider, he took my right of way so I shouldn't have panicked and just calmly shift back to 1st to move on and be thankful that the blind dumbas5 didn't run me over.

I have been a beginner in the past lol 🤣 Changing gears on a motorcycle isn't really the point of the video. I've done video tutorials on clutch and changing gears here if you need a few pointers: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kN6Be7KBydvOhqM.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9N9acqIzd-qhYE.html It would be too much info in a single video to include clutch control and gears, but hopefully the videos above will help.

Apologies again for not making the video in line with your divine understanding of motorcycles and content creation. Good luck

I installed gear indicator on my CBR650F. Removed it 6 weeks later. Found it waaaay too distracting. I let the feel of the bike/engine guide me.

My answer to the "Engine noise" bro's, is this: Do you change a stick shift in a car completely blindly? No they don't. The stick position tells them what gear they're in at all times. A quick touch of the stick is no different to a glance at a gear indicator on a bike. I've had people mock me for fitting a gear indicator to my CB1300, when THEY THEMSELVES have them factory fitted to their BMW GS bikes. Yet when I asked them to cover theirs with a piece of tape, they recoiled in horror, the raving hypocrites.
