Someone recently asked me if electronic drums require a special type of kick drum pedal. I answer that question, along with some advice on the best kickdrum beaters for edrums in this video.

Hey Justin. Thanks for all your time and effort in putting these videos together. My question is have you had any problems with your Roland KD A22 rubber impact pad? I’ve tried different beaters and some have caused a permanent indentation into the strike zone. I’ve tried the Gibraltar Click Patch to protect the impact area but I found that it doesn’t stick very well. Any thoughts on how to try and keep the beaters from damaging the KD A22? Thanks.

hey Justin. Recently my band had its first gig with the e-drums, which was possible thanks to the thigs I learned in your channel and I thank you for that. It wouldn't be a live performance without the unexpected problems. You see, the stage was made of a very thin wood and every time the drummer hit the kick the whole stage transmitted the vibration through the rack activating the cymbal triggers. There was a lot of double kick that night and as you can imagine it wasn't very fun. At the end the drummer made it without being too messy but I guess we'll be checking stages closely in the future

Justin thank you so much for everything! Love all your videos. I am looking fwd to purchasing my first ekit, the TD-50K2 once it’s released! It comes w a KD-140V bass drum w mesh head. Going to use a Pearl Eliminator Redline double pedal setup, and will use plastic side as per your video! Wondering how you orient the double beaters on your kick: couldn’t tell from the glimpse in your video, do you symmetrically align both beaters off-center? Or do you do what I used to do w acoustic drums back in the day and have main beater aligned for dead center of the head and the left slave beater a bit off-center, cheating left? Wondering best way for the vdrums. Also wondering if you think I need the evans pad to protect the kd-140, thx so much!!

Hey thanks for the tip! I used to play on a acoustic tama superstar but sold it because no where I lived would allow it. I bought a lyxjam 8 piece from Amazon. Did a lot of research and heard better things about this over the donner and Alesus. Have you come across this? It’s pretty great for under $500. Some sounds are terrible lol. But it’s pretty solid so far. And the large mesh snare is fun. Would like to get your review on it and any tips! Thanks man. Also my budget was obviously under $500 or I would have gone with a Roland.

It is actually the heat that causes problems. The felt causes heat on the mesh and melts it. Same effect with your hand sliding real fast over the carpet, you would burn yourself by doing this. And the only kind of patch that is properly sticking to the mesh is the drum-tec one. Others went off real quick.

Ok Justin, the Alesis DM10 Studio Mesh kit I'm trading my Roland in on comes with the Alesis kick pedal that came DM8 I believe. The beater looks similar to the DW beater you use. It's 2 sided felt/plastic, and they have it set to the felt side (Ugh!), but it's a floor model. I've played around on it a couple times and it's in dire need of adjustment. I'm just wondering if it's gonna be a decent kick pedal or should I just plan on buying a different one right away. Have you ever played with an Alesis pedal?

so can I use an acoustic drums double bass pedal on an electronic drum?

From what I get from the video: yes, but it might be a good idea to tape the felt heads, to reduce abrasion of the mesh.

Can anyone gove me advice? I've got a millennium mps 200 and wanna upgrade to a double bass pedal. Is that possible or would it trigger "wrong" with the sound module? any suggestions? Thanks

65 Drums Good to hear, thanks for the quick answer! Any specific one you would recommend? I know it's a very basic question but I'm a newbie at drumming since I'm a guitarist for years. Again, thank you for helping me! :)

Can you plug an electric drum kit into some 2.1 speakers?

You can plug electronic drums into any kind of speakers you want. Drum amps are best though

This is so great cause it has been bugging me for quite a while now and i wanted to ask you a similar question! So i got a Mesh E-Drum set, but my kick is rubber (you know those round ones). If you see one of my latest videos you will get it. So just cause i'm using EZ drummer for my sounds if i want double bass i just pass the note send of my hi-hat controller to that particular note. (with some drawbacks but you already know them. My real question is, if i buy a regular acoustic double bass pedal and hook it up to the rubber pad, will it be ok or will it ware off the rubber on it? I really want to know plus, i noticed that where the kick hits the rubber, the rubber is kind of sticky and i really dont know why it's like that, maybe something i need to know? Thanks in advance man!

You assign the highat to be a kickdrum within EZdrummer, I've never done it, but you adjust it there. question 2: it might be sticky because the kick beater has the potential to melt the rubber with heat and friction during play. Just a guess. try throwing a kickdrum patch on it

65 Drums Oh that doesn't sound good! I will throw a patch right away thanks!

65 Drums would a patch work on a rubber kick pad? I already have some triggering problems with a double pedal if the pedal strikes are very close, im also getting two wear spots using the DW double sided beaters. i use both the felt and plastic sides.

I also don't know what to do yet and i'm even scared to play my drumkit for this reason. Even when i glance that spot my kick did it gives me nightmares on what could happen in the future.

I cut the patch and use the felt as the plastic is very noisy.

I'm a paraplegic and needing suggestions for a trigger for a kick drum. Would like to use some kind of trigger I bite on. Any suggestions??

This is an interesting problem. I've thought about it, and you could buy a Pintech drum trigger. It's the size of a really thick quarter. It has cable leading to a quarter inch input, so you can plug it into the drum module with a guitar cable. Maybe wrap a piece of rubber around it so when you bite on it, the force doesn't damage the plastic. Here's the link, take a look: www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/pintech-acoustic-drum-trigger?pfm=item_page.rr1?pfm=ac-a
