I would love to see you interview your father! Sounds like he has a big history and strong connection with city pop music, especially when it was at the peak of its popularity. It would be interesting to hear which artists (beside Tatsuro Yamashita) he listened to, what things he liked about the genre the most and how that music influenced Japanese musicians in later years. Love your videos, Masa and greetings from Poland :)

RedMusicFighter-san, thank you for the idea 💡 my father was listening to tatsuro this morning actually 😆 he borrowed a CD from a library as he said he couldn’t find Tatsuro’s music on digital music services. 😅 He isn’t a musician so it’ll be a opinion from a normal music lover. :) My parents listened to Japanese 70/80s music not as the genre “City Pop “ so it maybe interesting.

i hope mariya takeuchi and tatsuro yamashita are still together as a couple!! they seem like a lovely couple. it's nice to know that she knows her music has become popular in the west and aboard. i'm sure she never imagined it happening 40 years later!! thank you for this video!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 if possible, would ever make a video about kaoru akimoto, her album cologne, her work with shambara, and what she's doing now? i'm interested to know what happened to her!!

Hi Katie-san. :) Thank you for your comment as always. Yes Mariya and Tatsuro are a really lovely couple. I always love listening to their conversations on radio. I think it’s one of the ideal marriage like they are not stressed by each other and they just can be who they are as a couple. Okay! Yes that’s actually an amazing City Pop album I should talk about at least! I’ll write it down on my list! Thank you for your request!

The extended club mix is included on the 30th anniversary edition of Variety. The liner notes indicate the remix was done shortly after the studio got a new sampler, and there are a lot of sampler clichés included in the song, but it sounds like the producers were having a lot of fun.

Yes exactly! Mariya chose Sweetest Music cover on purpose as it’s the one, which got popular in this international revival of City Pop! :)

It would be really interesting to see the differences between japanese and foreign City Pop fans. Maybe the japanese fans like some more less known songs and It would be great for us foreigners to discover those hidden gems

He Moreira-san. :) ok! I will do some research and ask city pop fans in japan. What I feel in general is that abroad fans know more hidden gems, whilst japanese City Pop fans know songs that were mainstream for example with TV commercials etc. I will look up further and make a video about that!

I think the boom originated from internet videos because citypop-type chords are great for like backing to videos on tiktok or youtube

Thank you for your video! I wonder why Mariya only has one live video on Plastic Love (the only one I could find on KZfaq). I really want to hear her singing this song again at her concerts or anywhere...Since this song has been viral, she may consider re-recording it. Also, do you know about an 80's band named Piper? I love their style of city pop as well. Maybe you can introduce them sometimes.

Sweet Music is a great song, I can't believe I never listened to it, even with the album cover staring me in the face 😅 And I sort of knew one of these facts - I always assumed Mariya didn't feel the same way as the girl in Plastic Love, but I didn't know for sure.
