We get asked so many questions about subwoofers - do you need one? Which ones are worth it?
Today, we are looking at how a subwoofer changes the sound of different speakers, and KRK Systems has generously sent us their S10.4 powered studio subwoofer so we can test it out.
To top it off, they’ve also let us giveaway one of these subwoofers too! Enter to win using the link above!
The S10.4 powered studio subwoofer builds upon KRK’s legacy for sonic accuracy and performance. The custom-voiced, glass-aramid woofer delivers tight, defined bass, while the Class-D power amplifier dramatically increases transient response, control and punch. The four-position selectable crossover makes it easy to adjust the subwoofer setting to your existing monitors.
Pairing the S10.4 with KRK or another studio monitors delivers an optimized listening and mixing experience with extended low end, while the exclusive bypass-control feature provides full range audio to the monitors without switching off the subwoofer. KRK's S10.4 subwoofer doesn’t just deliver precise bass and a rich feature set: it’s the next dimension in subwoofer performance.

The real benefit of the subwoofer isn't the bass enhancement - it's that you're no longer asking small to medium sized drivers to reproduce low frequencies. These are the hardest frequencies for smaller drivers to handle and generate the most heat and distortion (bad things for speaker performance). The monitors will then "improve" because you're not sending them frequencies they don't handle well.

AGREED! It's also usually best to use subs and satellites from the same manufacturer. What I don't understand here is why KRK felt the need to port a sub (?). It would be better to have more time domain and transient accuracy than so-called, "more bass." Another benefit of using a sub with smaller drivers is that it helps clarify the "smear" between lower mid and upper bass frequencies, facilitating better eq decisions in that frequency range.

@@beengrim3697 Its probably not crossing over... that's why its good to use subs from the same manufacturer. You can plug your mains into the sub and it acts as a system, correctly crossing over, and on good subs, dealing with phase issues, allowing for delay compensation and other things that help a sub blend into a soundstage, rather than just feeling like the low end is separated and coming from the floor.
@VIIOmusic
@VIIOmusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@beengrim3697 oh god no. It’s midnight and I cant wait to test your theory. I will put the crossover to the highest 90hz and then the sub sound to its minimun like off but not from switch. Then I will send the sine sub to the monitors and lets see if the crossover will cut the lows from the monitors. I really hope it do. If not I need to re try that 60hz setting tho it just sound lifeless but correct.

What a perfect video showcasing this sub!! I loved how you used both the full range 8 inch monitors as well as the smaller versions of them, and how the sub still worked as needed albeit lowering volumes and at the short distance used - this is a perfect showcase for me as I have the KRK 8s and wondered if this 10.4 would suffice - I can now see I'll be good to go for a home DJ type scenario, so many thanks for this!

I made my own with a Electro Voice 10" driver in a tuned 38 Hzt tuned ported box, I have a 1000 watt Leon subwoofer amp to handle the beast. Best subwoofer I ever have, new technology on all components. I love subwoofers since I was a teenager, I have owned any brand and size you can't imagine, really happy now. Love your channel. I do love sub harmonics, they are always around us, traffic, trains, airplanes or even at classical concerts.

Adding a sub to my chain changed my mixing drastically. I do make bass heavy house music, though. I've even used 10'' inch monitors, but having a dedicated sub which is also properly high passing the satellites, makes the satellites sound a lot better as well as they're not trying so hard to pump out low end. Game changer for me! :)

ABSOLUTELY YES, a subwoofer is 100% necessary to really monitor those lower frequencies and hear how and where they are going to "Thump". Set up the sub just to feel how the air is moving out of the subwoofer. Make sure not to generate bass that is not actually in the mix, use very low and unpowerful settings in the sub for mix accuracy.

Super interesting video! I bought my KRK Sub before buying the adam audio t5v's, and was very pleased with the final outcome. I found exactly the same thing you did. Mine is set at 60hz, and volume just under half. The reason I bought the KRK Sub was in that level of the market, the KRK seemed to have more features, particularly the footswitch which is critical. You absolutely need a way to turn it on and off ad-hoc whenever you need to. I only have mine on for two reasons and you mentioned them both, mostly because it's fun, and I totally agree it makes my ~AU$700 Adams sound more expensive! the other reason is simply to check the sub end of the mix. Thanks Warren, love how you reassure us plebs that the gear we can afford is totally legit!

Yes I use a sub. I’m mixing on a pair of Genelec 8030 and use a Rel R305 sub. It is not ideal but I use the Rel because I already had it (previously use it with my hifi set). That being said, it does help me a lot. It shows me what the low-end rumble does on a acoustic guitar or piano. Boy, that can really move some air.

I use my Genelec 1032 and the subwoofer 7070A, a little bit bigger than the KRK S10.4, for more than 15 years. They go down to 19 Hz. It was the best investment I did. You hear frequencies you never heard before. And it makes so much fun.

I was delighted with my KRK monitors but I switched to 3-way PSB towers to do mastering. I still use my Kenwood subwoofer to extend (not boost) the deep lows. Sonarworks really helped to even out the low-end and bring out the depth. Gives me eargasms!

I use an Electrovoice 18" DeltaMax subwoofer powered by one channel of a QSC PLX2 3602. It's plenty sensitive at any volume for my use, and will rearrange the entrails of guests if needed. It keeps my near field monitors from the hard labor of dealing with material below about 100hz... crossed-over with an EV DeltaMax DMC-2181X subwoofer controller.

I have the JBL LSR-308s and the LSR-310S Sub. You can't mix (well) what you can't hear. It's tricky to get smooth low frequencies in a small room, but it's worth the effort to play with placement and basic treatments to get relatively even low frequency response.

Hello and thank you very much for all your videos and work you've put into them as you've helped me and I guess tons of other people to get what they need in terms of high perfomance studio equipment! After I settled with an SSL 2 + A.I. and a beyerdynamic dt 880 to kick start my studio I'm currently looking at a nice set of monitors to enjoy and mix my music. I usually listen and experiment with electronic music. Pushing the boundaries of trance and techno! But i also enjoy my hip hop from time to time, when im not in the greatest of moods and have many friends that also do! For these reasons i would like to go with a clean super bassy pair without investing in a sub. At least for now. I was thinking about the Kali IN-8's but I'm afraid they will lack the low end i'm searching for. So ,I'm mostly considering the KRK's rokit 10-3 G4 as its still a 3-way monitor with a 10-inch subwoofer that can go down to 25 hz as the company states, which is pretty impressive on paper! But I cant find a lot of good reviews on those big boys so I'm torn between those and the Adam T8V's which also go pretty low as well. What are your thoughts on my thought proccess? Have you got any experience with those monitors? Thanks!

I use the JBL LSR310S in two of my rooms, one room with the 5" JBL LSR 305, and the other has the 6" JBL LSR306 for mains. We have a third room with the JBL LSR 308 and they don't need the sub. I run my setups through a Qsys Core 110F so and set the crossover based on where the speaker's frequency response hits the drop of 6dB /octave point. The 5" and the 6" are happy crossing to the sub at 85 and 82 Hz respectively, and seem to do great with a L&R 12dB/octave slope. There is a bit of delay required and polar rotation alignment to get the crossover just right, and I couldn't get that without an outboard processor. I've noticed that if the subs are physically set more than 5 degrees off center, it does pull some of the low end balance from the mains in that direction so I try to keep them as on center axis to listening as possible for both rooms.

I've always been asked to be cautious with a subwoofer, especially if the room is not properly treated acoustically. Its easier to treat a room for mids and highs (w rockwool panels and diffusers), however low end acoustic treatment ( bass traps ) is not as simple......so Warren i request you to shed some light on : 1) what if the subwoofer, "booms" excessively or just that due to lack of proper low end acoustic treatment does not actually provide more accurate monitoring? most bedroom producers or musicians starting out who have bought budget speakers, probably dont have a properly treated room, and so even if the subwoofer is high quality and affordable, does it really help the overall sound (for better mixing)? 2) pls show us the acoustic treatment in your studio, especially the bass trapping ..... Thankyou!

I paired this sub with the Kali IN-5's and I'm absolutely floored. SUCH a strong compliment to each other! Your reviews we're the tipping point for me in making my final decision on both the Kali's and the KRK 10.4, thank you. I've been testing moving my crossover between 70 and 80hz and that seems to take a good load off the IN-5's. Seems to increase their performance while not taking away from the good punchiness the 5" woofers on the Kali's have. For context, my room is a standard home office size with a decent amount of room treatment (Rockwool panels). Hope this helps someone else with their purchase decisions!

Hi there! One thing changed allot at lest in my studio with the subwoofer (old genelec with the old 8'' mackies) was the distance of the sub from the listener compared to the distance of the main speakers. Two inches closer make the sub stand up in a way that it was not part of the audio spectrum, some how you can different between the sub and the speakers, what it makes the same effect the other way. But when you have it in the right place, every thing sounds more musical and part of the same system. I'm saying this because even with the lavalier mic, sounds to me like the sub arrays earlier than the other speakers. Try to place them more in the same plane or axe. Thanks for your videos!

After setting my KRK sub level using the usual methods, pink noise, decibel meter, by ear, etc., I tweak it further using IK’s ARC3 analysis curves… For example, if after the ARC3 analysis it appears that ARC3 is generally trying to cut or boost sub frequencies to make my room flat, I adjust the KRK sub level very slightly up or down a notch and run the ARC3 analysis process again, until the ARC3 analysis curve shows ARC3 is doing little or no correction down there. My assumption is that if ARC3 isn’t trying to change the sub level, then the Level pot on the KRK sub must be set correctly.

I use different subs geared towards hi-fi (Focal Cub2, Yamaha NS-SW 200/300), I like the ones with plenty of connection options (high and low level) and connectors (mine don’t have XLR unfortunately). Don’t take the latest home-cinema sub, even the expensive ones, for they provide you only with a single low-level LFE input jack. But no matter how your eq and set the crossover, you absolutely MUST play pink noise and check the result in terms of sound-pressure level (SPL-meter), AND frequency response to try to approximate a flat decay without major dips and peaks. I use dBmeter on my phone, but you can use RoomEQ wizard (free) with a umik usb measurement mike (not free). Though I would tend to mix on big monitors without the sub, then listen on a true hi-fi system with a sub (by hi-fi, I mean non colored, neutral), as much as with my In-Ears, car radio etc...

Got that sub with the Rokit 5 G4 monitor speakers. Less for production, more for DJing - finally the setup is complete and it sounds really well. And you can choose how much fun you want to have due to the fine controls and if you are mixing at night or outdoors (benefits or a large spot in a warm country) without making too much noise. Even at a very low volume, the sub performs very well and delivers what is needed. And it has plenty of power for a homeparty if you need to. Covered speaker would be nice tho.
@DJCryonic
@DJCryonic Жыл бұрын
You can go to the max, 90Hz. The Rokit 5" G4 are pretty weak on their own, so the subwoofer helps a lot. I do consider getting the bigger 7" rokits in the future just to fill out the room a bit more. The size of the sub should be considered with the room and neighbors in mind, the S10.4 is a monster indoors for the size and price.

@@chrisbowmusic In that case you will be fine. I would go with the S10.4 - that one is not much more expensive and still does fit into most places and it provides proper low end, I did test it, it still plays all the way down to 24Hz so you will hear the low end that you need. And it has more than enough volume, shaking the windows and doors here at around 50%, you will rarely use the full power. And the power down on idle does work well with the Rokit speakers - the sub powers down in idle and wakes up with a signal - usually takes 2-3 seconds to wake up and then 2-3 seconds later the speakers wake up too. That feature alone - love it :)

I do use a subwoofer with my monitors and it is from the same manufacturer Yamaha ( HS80M for the main and the HS8S sub ) . Both are 8 inch cone and it works great , however I also use other speakers to check my mixes ( Trance and electronic music in general ) and since I've put a sub in my rig I can make better judgement for the down under frequencies . Electronic music do need subwoofer for mixing as this type of music is aimed most of the time at the club being played by DJ's on massive PA systems .

I used to be confused about why you would use subs to mix. It seemed to me that it would be the equivalent of using consumer headphones with a “hyped low end“, and therefore I would end up making poor mix decisions, based off of the extra low end information. But seeing as how you can actually dial in the frequency and gain structure, it totally makes sense! As it has been said, “the subs pick up where the near fields leave off.” I could see how this would be extremely helpful when high-passing very low frequency information. when just using near fields, you’re not going to hear what it is your high passing. KRK subs seem to be a great solution and a great extension for anyone’s mixing rig.

I'm only just seeing this from sometime in the future, but I found this extremely helpful! I use JBL308 monitors in my studio, which I love, and which have a decent amount of low end. However, I've long wanted to add a sub to my setup simply to add that very bottom whenever it's called upon. I've heard many YT pundits claim you should never, ever use a sub in the studio unless you're mixing in surround. Whilst I understand their rationale, I do think it's possible to tastefully add a touch of sub without overly colouring your mix. After all, by its very nature, mixing is all about taste anyway, innit? Besides, there are those times when I'll have people over to the studio, pop in a movie, grab a drink, and enjoy a full-range soundtrack using this same setup. In any case, this will help me select a sub, cheers!

My main setup for last decade been yamaha hs5 with yam sub. But I have setup my monitors a bit different. I have crossed it over using a combination of control room setting, eq plugins, sonarworks, multiple outputs all trigged in one second shortcut macro. This allows me with one button push on a controller to go full range hs5 no sub with correct sonarworks to a perfectly crossed over sub added with its own sonarworks settings. Again this is one of the reason I use cubase pro, the control room settings are in a league of their own.

@gotyor
@gotyor 2 жыл бұрын
@@wedontneednostinkinbadges3907 There is this whole control room section in cubase that is similar to large console format monitor section. You can have up to for sets of monitors configured with separate outs, and each monitor can have up to 8 of its own inserts. So I can have the main without sub running with sonarworks inserted with the preset that was made with just the main monitor. Then on the sub monitor setup I have to set identical master outs running to both sub and mains...except I includes eq insert with high shelf and low lof shelfs tell each set of speaker where to cut off their freq to no overlap. and after that I have another instance of sonarworks with a preset that was measured after this was done. As for the one button push. made a Macro routine that bypass and push all the buttons needed to make the switch in about 1 second. Its complicated, but works well. To see what all cubase can do youtube some videos about control room in cubase pro 11, it can do a whole lot more like setting up complex cue mixes and when you go to export to audio, you dont have to turn anything off (ie: sonarworks, monitor eq, etc) because non of this actually on the master, its all separate monitor section.

@05:51 So, that is a thing I was assuming, but I was quite wrong. I always thought that the crossover frequency also engages a lowcut filter to the signal that goes out from the output connectors on the sub, so that the sub and normal speakers don't have overlapping frequencies. But this tells me that these output ports just do a passthrough. Or do run the sub separate without using the output connections on the back?
@gr500music6
@gr500music6 3 жыл бұрын
On my older KRK S10 there's definitely a crossover in the unit. Full range goes to the sub and then the satellites are run from there with a signal which is, presumably, high-passed/low-cut. It came with good set-up software and a bevy of test signals. Don't know if the current version does, but should still be available on their site. What you find out from the set-up is that subs are tricky, jumpy, and, at least in my case, most useful when almost off. All rooms, sub and satellite combos, and placements will differ. Still, a good and useful product in my experience. I run a separate system of real world, un-powered book shelf monitors (Tannoy PBM 6.5s).
