One thing that I found is that overpacking frame bearings with good quality grease and then only rinse the bike off with a high pressure nozzle on the garden hose works great. I do use a chain cleaner with a degreaser when required, but that's it. So far, 6 months in there are no creaks, no play and chain is still holding up. Previously using a cleaning agent everytime after a ride wears away the grease at an alarming rate and creaking sounds appeared after a couple of washes. Sure the bike does not look clean but it is where it counts.

Suppose this depends on riding conditions. If your riding in thick mud all the time then having more grease around the bearings can be bad as it attracts more dirt to them causing more grinding.

@@James-dn1hu sure but it seems to work for my grease and frame. Mud is no issue, the little that gets stuck in the outer layer of the grease gets rinsed away with water when washed. If you have no grease it will work its way in the bearing directly, unless you are diligent and take it apart to clean and repack with grease. At least that's been my experience with my pole evolink and previous my older stumpjumper. Its like the solvents in the detergents make their way through the seals faster than mud via some extra grease.

Yup. Degreaser and high pressure are no-nos. I only wash my bike if it's got lots of mud. Otherwise it stays dirty until a complete strip down and complete rebuild. Takes a day and each component is checked. Haven't replaced components in a long time.

Contaminated brake pads are easily recovered by cooking them. A propane torch is good, but put under the griller in your kitchen works too - cook them until they stop smoking ;)

Yes. Yesterday, loose shock bolt & iffy battery lock on the eeb. Today, dragging caliper & stiff dropper cable on the enduro. The never ending cycle of dirty tools.

You can always recover contaminated a rotor. Pads are usually a goner. The outward bend of the cage on shimano derailleurs is a feature!

True, but at 20-30$ for a typical rotor, question is if it's really worth the effort. Also the cleaning stuff also costs at least a tiny amount.

Sintered pads are a 1min job with a blowtorch and a pair of pliers aswell... Doesn't work on organic though. .... Just burn of that oil and run them over a bit of sandpaper to get the soot off the surface.

dont really do regular, scheduled maintenance on my bike. Just listen for funny noises and give it the odd squeeze here, a twist there, and a couple drops while chatting with friends. Tho I did just have my rear hub come loose on my last ride. granted, i did hear it for a while, just couldnt pin point the noise. thought it was the spring in the rear brake

Been surfing through YT lately for proper MTB content and I honestly love your attitude put towards servicing, it really shows proper ownership something few consumers know nowadays. Anyways, I just purchased my first Downhill dedicated MTB after going up my nearby trail in a Ecotric Vortex E-bike I realized I made a huge mistake since I don't even use that as a commuter bike. those shimano 12 speed derailleurs come with what looks like a slightly bent cage, put a new xtr on a new build and thought it was bent but did some research before trying to bend it back

#askgmbntech I am looking at buying a new rear wheel off of pink bike, it’s the right size but the thru axle is not the same as my current one, my current one is a standard thru axle, one where you unscrew it with a hex wrench and pull it out, but the wheel I want has nuts on each side like a bmx wheel. Will I be able to put my current axle on the new wheel.

I have mostly single speeds and I don't ride dirt when its muddy so I just keep the air in the tires and thats about it. I also use cable actuated disc brakes because they are easier to maintain.

Hydraulic brakes are better and in my opinion equally easy to maintain

@@noliemig i've not gotten round to doing any maintenance on my mtb but from prior experience of big bikes... i think people over estimate how hard it is to work on hydraulic brakes. also they are pretty bomb proof once set up. now working on frayed steel cables and not coming away bleeding from multiple new holes... that is hard to do lol...

Stop saying that people should not touch the rotors. Its tough to manage and does not guarantee there will be no oil or grease on it. Best practice is to clean the rotor right after install - with a clean paper towel and lots of brake cleaner -> same stuff you use to degrease your cars rotors after install. In fact - I have driven through oily puddles and stuff (car must have lost oil on road) and I have recovered my brakes by cleaning rotors and pads.

Did mine recently. New chain, new brake and gear cables, headset bearings. Whole bike almost. Quite relaxing and enjoyable working on it. Cytech does come in handy sometimes.

Every manufacturer and rider says their chain lube is the best. Each one receives negative reviews too, often referring to dirt and muck it collects either on the chain itself or around the pulleys/derailleur chain guide, particularly regarding wet chain lubes (I'm in the UK). Is this mainly because of infrequent maintenance or cleaning, or do any particular wet lubes stand out which don't compromise efficiency? Pre-prep is not an issue for me, but it would nice to find out which the better one is for either quick clean or pre-prep conditions in each case. Squirt seems to have most positive feedback % thus so far when I read rider feedback.

I often ask my dad (yes I am a 12 yr old kid) to learn to maintain my mountain bike but he says 'the bike shop will take care of everything' and I know that's not true. My bike definitely needs some grease on the fork and the rear shock as well as a brake bleed. As of now, I am only allowed to lube the chain. I am not sure if it is ok to maintain my bike by myself or ask my dad to do it for me.

@@ronrides345 convince your parents you are serious about learning to maintain your bike. pick out the basic tools you would need - show them the cost vs. each time you take it in to the shop. if they see that it saves money and provides you a hobby keepin you out of trouble *AND* they still say no, get some new parents ;)

No, replacing parts with a tune up is *not* always no additional labor charge. How could you even consider making a blanket statement about labor prices like that? Have you surveyed every bike shop on the planet? Time is money, and the shops around here charge for it.

A new rotor because you got some spray lube on it? Why not just clean it... And the pads can be cleaned too / sanded or just run the contaminated rotors and burn off the oil.

#AskGMBNTech can you mix different tire sealants? My Giatn came with some Giant tubeless sealant and I have Stan's No Tubes sealant. Can I use it to top it up, or I have to clean previous sealant, washout rims and then add Stan's? Got my bike for like 2 months, had no issue with sealant, but planning to do my first XC race soon, so thinking to top up just to be sure

I wouldn’t mix different brands. I mixed Stan’s with Orange, not knowing any better, which turned my sealant into cobwebs. I had to throw the tire away.

No, if you clamp by the upper section just make sure it is all the way extended first.

Happy mechanics at the store, I'd say it's much too often. There are some minor things you might wanna do yourself every 500km, but to take it to the shop so often, seems a bit overkill. But it's your money and they might be worth less than your time.

#askgmbntech Hi there, recently I installed a megneg air can onto a rockshox deluxe select plus. Once on I found that the shock now leaks air. I can’t can’t find a visible leak and I checked everything and it looked ok. I took it apart and put it back together again, it still leaks but slightly less. What do you think the problem is? And how can I fix it? Thanks a lot

It’s probably happening when sliding the new air can on. it can be difficult because of the resistance and that is more than likely causing one or more of your seals to move out of place, causing a leak.

I think the better question to ask is why does your bike always break or doesn't work properly. My guess is that its not the bikers fault and more the bikes and parts themselv which arent sufficently made to withstand the abuse.

I have 3 bikes to maintain and I do them every other week. Checking brakes, shifters, wheels, chains, etc. Its my hobby ^^ And in the end I feel my GF safe on the bike... I saved up a little pile of money by doing these myself.

No issues with assembly for me kzfaq.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".

Really interesting and also nice present... but anyway i would like to mention.... maintenance your bike at home... is not a smart idea...and that channel like GMBN this promote is special not clever.... myself working in bike industry more than 15years and last 7years specialist in suspension and brakes, and i will ask GMBN give me good reason and answer where make seance that all shops and mechanic need to have technical curse and special licence updated EVERY year from Shimano-Fox-RockShox-Sram-Bosh-and many others, and cost a lot, but than everybody can do at home service and all is good? i believe this is not the idea... and special many times is clear that example suspension need to be at licensed service ever120h or 1time on year... and next thing... when you touch your bike at home and do service and later is frame broken (can be wrong NM at some bolt) than warranty is accepted this again is not correct... and and and... i could continue but overall i see too much this things and is just not fear to the shops which invest a lot in technology and servis and than KZfaq channels present that you can do alone at home....

With the internet, and especially KZfaq, there is no excuse not to work on your own bike. Two labor charges for a shop to do a lower leg service on your fork will pay for most of the tools that you will need. The rest is just trying.... Any bike of mine has not seen the inside of a LBS in 30 plus years and the saved labor costs have probably paid for my current bike.

I got a couply bikes: my bike, I bought from the warehouse and stripped down to frame and then put about $500 of components on it - it's my ride when I don't have a ride - City Beater Mach I - swap out stuff periodically but that's it. Then my other ride self built for a little over $10,000 - Mach II - maintain it like crazy, haha. Carry duplicates of most of my muc off gear, and spare parts - different lube types for different conditions - keep it as clean as - so maintain it as much as I value it, lol.

Love and hate in (not so) equal measures... just like you (should probably) treat your body, can't keep ragging the ever loving excrement out of it without a bit a of TLC every now and again. We really are not so different than machines in that respect. It's a shame it's getting hard to maintain stuff when everything's got months lead times on it :(

I’m pretty sure jack got told what to say. When he was like “spray lube” I bet he actually uses good stuff. Also probably deliberately broke parts and contaminated brakes. Still useful
