A few years ago, an indie movie called Under The Silver Lake came out. The director talked about how he wanted to use old school, paint-on-glass matte paintings for a lot of the backgrounds, but they couldn't find anyone who knew how to do it. It's been literal decades since this was a marketable skill, so all of the artists are retired, and many have passed on. This is truly a lost art.

As a production insert that can fit into a normal production time-table under a certain budget, certainly. But just as with anything, a properly motivated film company working with a properly motivated artist and lighting/camera crew, with enough time could figure it out. It just would not be competitive with digital in speed, cost or workflow... and possibly wouldn't hold up to 4K digital projection.

@@patreekotime4578 it would probably hold up better than 4k as you can reshoot a matte painting if its intact, but resizing a digital painting to be larger (for example) is still a shitshow even with ai

@@ElDerpy Well generally speaking, even old film stock often has more detail than the early digital effects. One of the reasons Ill never forgive Lucas for the digital sins he committed against his own films.

Ya know, in all these Prop Store videos, I've never felt the actual desire to OWN any of these pieces. Huge and unwieldy and difficult to store, were the only things that ever came to mind when I would see such things as original costumes, vehicles, even shelf-size props. But a background matte painting... now THAT has me interested!

when adam mentioned "not TOO much detail" it really made me think of miniatures painting, as well. we do all kinds of odd non-photographic shading and accentuation so it reads at a distance, even if it looks cartoonish under a magnifying glass

As an artist I've been kinda going down the rabbit hole of using less detail. Then seeing something like this even furthers this journey. Broad strokes seem to have a lot more payoff than meticulous details.

When I first started doing photography I realized the value of a shallow depth of focus. Conserving sharpness to where you want to direct the viewer's eyes can be much more powerful than a fully sharp image.

Same goes for music - you'll write your best music when you take notes away - it forces you to make something of the song as a whole rather than relying on a single catchy hook.

Yeah I think alot of the economy here is really in service of the photography. Remember that all of these guys had an intimate knowledge of how much detail would be captured by the film stock, but also an understanding of where the focal point would be in the shot, as well as how much camera movement would be happening. The batcave especially shows bokeh around all of the light sources to simulate being slightly out-of-focus while the batmobile was probably in sharp focus. Matte paintings done to composite long depth of field shots (like exterior daylight scenes) typically have more detail than these. As much as people hate the Ewok movies today, there was a television special about the making of The Battle for Endor and one scene shows how they used a glass matte composite to film the actors running up a hill towards a castle. Really stunning work.

When I found out the interior of the Death Star in Episode 4 were matte paintings I was amazed (where the stormtroopers are all lined up to greet Darth).

The three original Star Wars movies Episodes IV, V, VI actually used hundreds of matte paintings. Most were completely invisible.

I've always viewed my paintings as "Don't paint the object, paint the light on the object" this allows for the depth and sense of detail.

Considering that's all anyone sees anyway, the light hitting the object rather than the object itself, your technique has a beautiful sense of logic to it.

This painting was created at Matte World Digital, painted by Christopher Evan’s. The VFX supervisor was Craig Barron. I was the digital compositor on this shot. this was the only one of three matte paintings we did for Independence Day that was used in the film. If you watch the film you’ll notice the model elements of the infiltrator alien ship and the gantry. also the color of the whole shot is timed very differently than the actual painting. there is an interesting story there about our contribution to the film but i’ll save that for another time.

I'm not gonna lie I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the ID4 mothership was a matte painting. I pulled up the scene for reference and it looks like they also added some minatures in the foreground to sell the effect. This whole time I thought it was a CG background.

Suggestion for these prop videos: it would be cool/useful to show still frames or very short clips from the movies to show the props in context. Especially when Brandon says they have screen matched it.

Copyright and Licensing. He doesnt have permission to show that footage and the content of these videos doesnt IMO meet the criteria of fair use. The prop store likely has the right to show those scenes in their catalog, but this channel doesn't.

Obi-Wan shutting off the tractor beam, the over head shot of the Millennium Falcon in the Death Star hanger and the establishing shot of the X-wings in the Yavin temple hanger, I believe were all in-camera composites.

If you watch any science fiction film with a decent budget from the 1990s and earlier, you are seeing a matte painting somewhere. They were also used commonly in period films like Gone with the Wind, Cleopatra, etc. Any time it was too expensive or time consuming to build a set, or a landscape just didnt exist, they used matte paintings. There are some cases where model minatures are used instead of matte paintings for backgrounds, it just depends on the demands of the shot. But youve probably seen many matte paintings over the years and had no idea thats what you were seeing. Heck, Disney even pioneered methods of using large matte paintings for backgrounds and panning and zooming the camera across them to create depth and motion through animated landscapes.

@@914Rocky When you see an older film and theres like an aerial shot thats either totally still or there is a little push zoom but otherwise no motion, thats generally a matte painting. Used often as an establishing shot for a location, to say: here is where the action is taking place. Those are the easiest to spot. But there are many many classic films that are shot entirely on sound stages with elaborate sets and backdrop paintings, and even rear-projection used to give the illusion of sweeping landscapes, dynamic cities, or elaborate architecture. Its really wild when you start thinking about it.

Not only sf films. A very famous scene involving matte painting, is in the Ice Rink ( Charlie Chaplin), where he is seemingly skating around an open void/staircase.

The matte painters most important skill to master is lighting, which leads to shape and value as well. Detail is rarely needed, cause mostly the background is out of the focus field.

I also think it's because "movies aren't really that great". People think "well it's a movie of real life so the painting has to look like real life." No, it only has to look as good as a movie.

@@petermgruhn Film stock isn't perfect. Shots are out of focus, part of a fast cut, or subject to camera movement, all of which reduces the detail required.

Favorite matte painting, Mary Poppins with Julie Andrew's. When they are on the rooftops looking over London when the sun is going down. Breath taking.

As one of the second generation of a now third generation family of artists, I just wanted to mention that in addition to convincingly representing depth by depicting the proper level of detail at every scale, along with the fine precision and highlights required in the foreground, one of the most challenging aspects of matte painting is perfectly matching the color palette to the gamma of the film stock once it has been processed. Granted, in the digital era this is much much easier but the old school artists had to get it right by skill alone. That really blows my mind, it's very hard to pull off when the end product will be back illuminated and projected onto a giant screen in the end. I know I couldn't do it like these folks did without a hell of a lot of practice, trial, and error.

Just looked up the Independence Day shot where this specific piece was used and it's a 5 second shot. You can see a lot of extra elements were added, with the light blue stripes being blocked by some other horizontal structures. But u can definitely see that it's this piece that was used.

Damn 1996 would have been at the absolute tail end of the oil matte painting era. Titanic has one shot of the Carpathia matte near the end that was probably the last one.

My favorite glass painting is over at ILM, the painting overlooking the city from the hill that ET walks up to Elliot's house in the intro, also backlit with fiber optics. I also happened to visit the actual location of that neighborhood, the street overlooking the real homes, hiked up the hill where "Keys" looks down from. Stevenson Ranch if I remember correctly. Also not far from Marty McFly's 1985 neighborhood.

i was telling my son just yesterday that i spent quite a lot of time at shepperton film studios on a variety of projects - i've even got to hang out on thomas the tank engine film set - but what always impressed me was the corridor with glass paintings leaning against the wall, the only one i know from a film was from "princess caribou" (i think, this is a long time ago) of ships on the thames (or some such river), but also the interior of a submarine, and then a variety of pictures of all kinds, all very realistic, but just left leaning against the wall in a corridor. art eh, funny old thing.

The new Barbie movie has actual physical matte paintings which they show off in their behind the scenes video of the set. So they are still used even in movies you wouldn't expect to use them.

To me, the two cliffs on the sides just do not work. It gives off Escher vibes, of angles that don't quite line up. The impossibly steep and long, railless staircase, does not help.

The first time I became aware of matte paintings was watching Labyrinth as a kid, I was blown away when I realised you could just barely see the join from the physical set to the corridors running off into the distance. I'd still take it over CGI anyday, and blends so much nicer.

Matte painters understood that any fine detail work would get lost in the grain of the film used to photograph their paintings. The masters knew exactly what they could leave out but still give the impression of detail.

If you want to see the Batman Returns matte in the movie it’s about 1 hour 33 minutes in. For Independence Day it’s 1 hour 58 minutes.

I've heard a lot of talk about matte paintings over the years but never seen one before and I have often wondered what they look like, I thought they were always done on glass, so it's great to finally see some. The independence day one is cool you can see the registration marks in the corners they used for lining up the separate composite layers, awesome.

Please please please cover Lot #72 - the custom made 65mm VFX tri-stack matte camera that is in this auction. It is an amazing bit of tech, used on Blade Runner, Close Encounters, Ghostbusters, 2010, Batman Returns, and many more. I've seen the listing an some articles on it, but I find it confusing how this camera actually operates. Somehow it has extra magazine reels to film a matte painting with another piece of film next to the negative. It looks amazing and boggles my mind. I can almost grasp the concept of a bi-stack, but a tri-stack seems like it could do 2 matte paintings or some other wizardry. I think this content would be well suited to this audience.

If anyone is interested I would suggest researching. Harrison Ellenshaw. He was one of Disney's key background painters and did a lot of work for Star wars. I own several of his originals and they are absolutely beautiful.

And his father, Peter, whose footsteps he followed in, working on many Disney classics and training Harrison in the craft/art. Other matte painting greats are Chris Evans (different Chris Evans as they said) and Michael Pangrazio. Both of whom also worked at Matte World/Matte World Digital, and on the Star Wars and Indy films!

I was lucky enough to pick up the Independence Day matte painting from this auction. It’s a beautiful piece, and looks great hanging on the wall! Still need to try and set up something to show off the awesome fiber optic lighting from the back, though.

I like how the lights flickered in a believable pattern as you struggled to try and make it as consistent and solid as possible. Hard to replicate that on a digital screen.

One of the craziest things about matte paintings is how briefly they are actually seen on screen. For instance, the one from Independence Day was only on screen for about 3 seconds in just one single shot of the movie. And that's pretty typical for a matte painting, because the more time the audience can look at it, the more likely the illusion will be broken.

This was great! I was a fan of both Joe Johnston (storyboards) and Nilo Rodis-Jamero (visual effects art director) when they worked on The Empire Strikes Back. And of course Ralph McQuarrie's matte paintings and concept art on Episodes IV, V and VI.

Absolutely! And to give Johnston his proper due (which is pretty much never done), he solidified the 'look' of Star Wars way beyond just storyboards and is just as responsible if not moreso than the other great, McQuarrie! And did character and ship designs too. Most people don't know he's the same guy that directed all those movies or his designs for Iron Giant, either! Just being a big fan here because I'm happy you mentioned him!

My first 3D animation class in 1997 was so low tech compared to what we have now, it’s barely recognizable! Matte paintings are so interesting and timeless!

The ID4 section was composited on as well, a lot in the end it seems, you can find it in the shot of Jeff and Will as they approach to be docked, it has a bunch of cranes composited over the top of it and a section down the lower right side has been matted see through in the final shot.

Many years ago, there was a series on the Discovery Channel called "Movie Magic" I find myself rived to it when it comes on, and they often go into various matte paintings, along with things like miniatures, and all sorts of old school stuff just on the cusp of CGI projects like Jurassic Park.

If I remember correctly that matte painting from Batman Returns was was after when Bruce was was repairing the Batmobile after when it was launched into the Gotham after the Penguin sabotaged the Batmobile and Batman had to get away from the police and couldn't get down an all after the the Penguin's incident and it transformed into the Batmissle speeding away in downtown Gotham. That matte painting was used in the death star on Star Wars episode 4 a New Hope

Adam is the man I’d ‘’most want’ to explain our ‘end days’ . He’s the guy NASA would hire as the commentator of the impending meteor impact . A fascinating man. A very personable man…. …and there the “power of 3 fails me’ 🤔 ….and as FINE a man to any cat as you’d possible imagine

I'd love to see a matte painting of the Tron universe or that matte painting of the Deathstar where all the stormtroopers where painted on.

just goes to show matte paintings will ALWAYS be 1000X better than CGI - it is soft and natural on the eyes and blends into the scenery perfectly

Some companies used to clean their glass off after the matte was shot, to re-use the glass for another painting... most of these were fairly low detailed scenes, but still.

I thought it was on it's side too. Turn it 90° and it could almost be from Bladerunner. Independence Day was an interesting film in that it used way more practical effects than you might realise.

neat. Yeah the ID4 they have the landing dock/arm thing composited in front of the opening. Basically where there are those blue lines there is a landing arm in front of it.
