Century III Mall is a defunct enclosed shopping mall located along Route 51 in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, approximately 10 miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. The mall was built on a former slag dump in 1979. The Century III Mall planning began in 1976, opened in 1979, and closed in 2019. Anchor stores included Kaufmann's, Gimbels, JCPenney, Sears, and Montgomery Ward.
It was the third largest shopping mall in the world at the time of its opening, but has since been surpassed by much larger malls. The mall was originally developed and owned by Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation. A 1996 merger between the mall's developer, now known as the DeBartolo Realty Corporation, and Simon Property Group, brought Century III Mall under the Simon DeBartolo Group heading, who owned the mall until 2011. The vacant mall site is currently owned by Las Vegas-based Moonbeam Capital Investments LLC

This mall was unbelievable. I can’t explain to you how much of my childhood was spent in this place. Sbarro pizza. The arcade. The pet store. So many so many stores.

Before the mall, I remember my dad would take me up the hill to watch (and feel) the slag glowing at night. I was mad when they began building the mall. Of course, I ended up spending my entire teenage years there. It was a huge social scene. My friends and I worked there, loitered after school (aka smoked weed), went to the game rooms, met lots of people, oh, and shopped. You could buy cigarettes in a machine and smoke anywhere. There weren't any fights, and the idea of mass shootings didn't exist. It was very safe. Kids of all ages would get dumped there on the weekend as the mall became a giant babysitter. As the Pittsburgh steel mills and factories closed down, the mall provided thousands of low pay jobs. I think the minimum wage was something like $3 an hour. You would see somebody working their "opening shift" at Sears and then their "closing" shift at the pizza place. Lots of high school kids actually worked. Women (whose husband's were laid off) took part-time jobs to make the holidays a little brighter for their family. Christmas time was horrible, though. Especially if you worked there. Besides having to park miles away and walk in the cold, you couldn't move no matter where you went in the mall. It did have everything you could ever want. Three levels, record stores, department stores, a glass elevator, a huge square in the center where they would have bands/shows, Santa Claus, beautiful decorations, several water fountains, independent restaurants, a waterbed store, Hickory Farms, GAP, candy shops, Spencer's, Heaven, shoe stores, a massive food court and a hundred other places. Easy to get lost if you didn't go often. It really was an obscene display of consumerism, perfect for the Reagan years. In the late 80s, I moved away a year after graduation and never went back. My parents updated me on the mall decline over the years. I finally saw the abandoned mess this year. It's shocking how the roads are still open yet have meteor size potholes that cover almost every inch of them. Nobody seems to use the stop signs or traffic lights. Revolting how the local town and state would allow such a disaster to exist. HUGE failure all around. It would be nice to see the property revitalized, but that will never happen. Develop affordable housing or a senior center. Amazon could afford a center with the change Bezos finds in his yacht sofa. Of course, that takes ambition and vision from the local government, something I don't see them partaking in. My bet, it sits and rots for another decade. Funny, I literally came across this video when I googled, "plans for Century 3 Mall". I didn't find anything. Lol. Thanks for the memories.

I enjoyed reading this comment. Nothing makes me feel more wistful than decaying malls and people’s fond memories of them. Our childhood memories are closely linked to the heyday of the malls we spent so much time in growing up. It feels like such a safe, carefree time. A time when we were more social than we are now. Seeing them abandoned is a stark reminder of time passing, of what was, of what we’ve lost.

Even though I was a teen when Century III opened, I lived about 1 mile from Monroeville Mall then (Yeah, the one with the ZOMBIES!) so Monroeville was where we "hung out" As an adult I lived in Brentwood making Century III AND South Hills Village close to me. Oddly I shopped at South Hills Village more than Century III despite it being marginally closer. This was NO FAULT of Century III. It was due to me being more familiar with South Hills Village having been romantically involved with a girl from Bethel Park who worked at SHV, LOL. The most frequent store I shopped at in Century III was without a doubt Sears. Half of everything I owned came either from Sears or K Mart (Long before THAT fateful merger). I did make plenty of use of Century III's food court and the theatre. It was a damned impressive mall in it's time to be sure! Sad to see it go. The weird thing is AGE has nothing to do with any mall's decline around here: South Hills Village is MUCH older (1965) as is Monroeville Mall (1969). and both are running about as good as any mall CAN be in this day and age. OTOH the much NEWER Pittsburgh Mills is a dramatic failure. It seems that today outdoor "strips" like the Waterfront and the older Waterworks are doing better than enclosed malls. This is weird to me as Pittsburgh has SHIT weather and if I want to shop multiple stores, I'd much rather be INSIDE a nice warm mall especially during the "holiday" season.

I have to give it up to J. C. Penney. They were there at the very beginning and were there to the end. With Sears gone, I hope J.C. Penney survives as we need stores that are "nicer" than just Wal*Fart!

6:00 TJ Maxx N More was a supersized concept of a TJ Maxx store, established by the TJX Companies in 1997. Unlike regular TJ Maxx stores, TJ Maxx N More would carry a huge selection of housewares, home furnishings, and rugs, just like its sibling home store chain HomeGoods. It's basically a TJ Maxx store combined with HomeGoods. However, TJ Maxx N More's business at Century III Mall only lasted 5 years as it closed in 2003. Many other TJ Maxx N More stores have rebranded as TJ Maxx & HomeGoods stores by the mid-2000's.

that's true, there are many successful malls out there, sometimes they are placed in bad areas and there are those that have nothing better to do but cause trouble which drives customers away.

I used to live in the south hills of Pittsburgh and used to hang out there as a teen in the early 80s. This mall was, as stated above, doomed to fail in the late 1980s and early 1990s. During this time Century 3 Mall became known as the place to have your car stolen from. The Port Authority, Pittsburgh’s public transportation system, made the mall a sort of hub for bus transfers. This was during the height of inner city street gang activity so a lot of gangs took busses to the mall to prey upon shoppers, break in cars for theft or stealing them outright. Also there were numerous gang fights in the mall, it’s wide open parking lots and surrounding areas. Certainly the retail apocalypse put the final nail into Century 3’s coffin but it was in big trouble long before that. From what I hear South Hills Village which is a smaller and older shopping mall still thrives because they are in a nicer area of Pittsburgh and they keep the riff raf out despite a large light rail public transportation stop just behind the mall. I don’t ever recall of hearing of any issues at South Hills Village even though the light rail goes directly into downtown Pittsburgh. Just wanted to expand on what Kevin Anderson stated above because I guess for political purposes this aspect of the mall’s decline is never mentioned.

@@mikee2923 True, SHV it's doing pretty well despite any internet take over. There are security guards walking around and actively talking to people and telling them about behavior that they will not tolerate. There are signs on both ends of the stores that talk about the expected behavior at every entrance. I was in the mall for 45 minutes and I literally saw a uniform security guard having a decent conversation with some boys about what they are not allowed to do and why they are not allowed to be without their parents and one infraction and they would be banned forever. They are really taking charge of safety there. People actually returned to this mall after the pandemic.

The Montgomery Ward logo didn’t change its 1970s look with its lettering font and background. I’m sure that didn’t help. The 80s were about the upbeat pretty neon look. The Montgomery Ward sign looked too much like a sign for a discount scratch and dent appliance store that belonged in an old strip mall area.

It just seems so wasteful that these malls cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build and then just 30 or 40 years later they're completely vacant and being knocked down. It's really too bad, and I really haven't heard a good explanation for why they seem to have become unpopular almost overnight. I don't think internet shopping could explain it.

What was the name of the cigar store in Century 3? I remember going in there with my dad. Red carpeting, with mirrors and smelled of cigars but strangely smelled good…!!! I loved Century 3. Was born in 87, Grew up there, enjoyed the best of it. My dad used to take me to get my hair done at Philip Pelusi, and take me shopping at the toy store. My mom always entered the small at Sears, and I remember always getting yelled at cause I ALWAYS had to pee, and remember stopping at the bathrooms in Sears to do so. We would go school shopping at the mall and it was usually a 3-4 hour ordeal and our bags got heavy so we had to rent lockers!!! I remember seeing boys we had crushes on coming down the escalators. At anytime you were at the mall, you ALWAYS seen people you knew from school. This was THE PLACE to be. At age 9, we used to take two buses from Lincoln place just to get to the mall. You could get 20 Off your parents and it was enough for a whole outfit or two at Rave!! Who remembers Rave? Loved that store. As I got to be a teen around year 2000 we would drive around smoking weed with older boys and meet boys at the mall and go out in the woods to smoke weed. Teenagers always parked down underneath at the food court entrance. The thing to do was go eat at the food court and always at the French fry factory. I actually still have dreams about this mall so it must be in my heart. I moved away from the area in 03 n The last time I was there was probably 2006-07. My son was a baby. I remember the decline and it made me so sad. I moved out near pgh mills mall and lived down the hill when it was being built. When it opened in 05 I was pregnant with my son and it was so exciting to enjoy a new mall however we all watched its decline. It’s sad and I think they are closing that one soon as well, it was just up for sheriffs sale. I’m happy to be apart of the mall generation and we were the last to enjoy the best of it (I’m 36). Alls we really have left is Amazon….oh How times have changed. I’m sad my kids will never get to experience the joy of shopping malls although I heard Westmoreland mall is still Pretty hopping. Going to visit that one soon…
