Years ago I was in Hong Kong with a girl from Taiwan. She went up to a local lady and said in English, “do you speak Chinese?”. I thought it was the funniest thing because of course if she spoke it in Chinese she would discover quickly if the woman understood. Of course the problem was people there speak Cantonese and my friend spoke Mandarin. However the great thing was they can all read the same writing and we could communicate that way. It was before smart phones and google translate

The French were actually very helpful and would laugh and speak English if you attempted to speak French. Figure the pain of hearing bad French attempted with an Australian accent was too much for them.
