It feels great to be sailing, back on the move again and although we weren't going to make another video covering Studland Bay. After our last couple of videos we have had several people contact us asking why we didn't talk about the 'no anchoring zone', and then we discovered a really cool walk too, so let us share what's new in one of our favourite Dorset coast anchorages.

Hi guys, loving the videos and your self sustainable living (as much as possible). We’ve been living full time on our boat for 6 years now and I was amazed that you are using packet rice, yours reason for too much power to boil rice! We use a recipe for perfect rice which is a doddle to do and uses hardly any power. Serves 2 people, 150g (basmati) rice and 300ml water. Rinse rice and then add water and pinch of salt in a pan with a lid. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 8mins or until the water is nearly absorbed into the rice, then turn off the power stir the rice and place the lid on and leave for about 20mins. Then fluff up the rice and serve. The key is to not lift the lid while the rice is resting!

The photos showing the changes in the sea grass are interesting. We went a lot in the late 70's and again in the 90's. It was always pretty crowded in the summer (at a guess after this long time) would be never less than 60 yachts in summer. But I don't remember ever anchoring on anything but clear sand.

The installation of the eco-moorings was deemed necessary by bad science (small scale study over too short a period), stemming from a false premise (the seagrass has increased over the period of growth of popularity of boating, not reduced). No matter what the truth is, I think the eco-moorings are a good thing as they do away with people anchoring their boats badly or too close to their neighbours. There will always be someone who mis-calculates the required scope or fails to dig in the anchor sufficiently.

Another great video and I may as well chime in on the anchoring. Firstly I commend the authorities for providing moorings and implementing voluntary no anchor zones. The damage from anchoring is debatable but what exacerbates it is the cheaping out some sailors do when rigging their ground tackle. A correctly weighted anchor on correctly sized chain doesn't drag, in Australia I see many cruising boats, power and sail alike with grossly inadequate ground tackle both in weight or design of anchor and size and length of chain.the idea seems to be that less chain does less damage but the opposite is true because a good length of heavy chain doesn't drag all over the sea floor. Just my thoughts fair winds and following seas give Hank a pat for me

An important thing to remember about environmentalists, is they’re nearly always activists, who never see that they have to observe the normal rules in pursuit of “the cause.” Normal rules like telling the truth, being consistent and following the science, all the science all the time, and not just when it suits “the cause.” And not abusing anyone else who wonders whether there might be an alternative explanation to that the activists have determined is “the truth.” And they’re very skilled at focussing media attention on not just their “problem” (real or imagined) but also on their very costly solution (or non-solution, as the case often is) that costs other people money or freedoms but never the activists themselves. Once you begin to see this, you see it everywhere and you can’t ever seem to unsee it.

@@CadohaAdventures trust me you don't need a DSLR for decent subsea footage, I owned a Sony MPK-v11 video camera when they first came out (still have it). So I have taken a fair bit of footage over the years, my advice would be stick to a GoPro, I got the hero 9 and with the hyper stabilization and the adjustable field of view aspects then you have all that you will ever need. You just have to apply your creativity (which is great and noticeably unleashed since early videos) and apply that underwater. The only extra you would need is some subsea lights to backlight objects or counteract backscatter, other than that a GoPro is a great bit of kit subsea.👍

With regards to seagrass I have read articles on research done on established seagrass meadows that are being destroyed by anchoring and moorings. You can clearly see where anchors have ripped up the seagrass and left bare patches. It is interesting to see the photos of Studland however I would suggest they are inconclusive at best and would rely on the current scientific stance until it is proven incorrect. I love the idea that anchorong could be spreading seeds though!!

Great film quality guys, well done, just getting better & better. Re. the mooring buoys it seems we’re urgently in need of some proper research to work out exactly what effect anchoring has. It shouldn’t be difficult either just use the Med as a test bed because for the last few years you haven’t been able to anchor anywhere near sea grass in Spanish waters, they have spotter boats that check every anchorage around the Balearics. A guy with a glass bottomed bucket will inspect any boat close to sea grass and if your chain is touching it (doesn’t matter if your anchor is well away) you will be told to move. The rest of the Med… apparently know one cares! Should be pretty easy to compare the sea grass and recovery, if there is one, of species that use against areas of no action. Wonder if anyones actually doing it?

The rebound in seagrass extent shown in the aerial images is likely from previously low levels due to a wasting disease that wiped out much of the UK’s seagrass several decades ago. Thankfully as you’ve shown it is beginning to recover. One must also be careful when using aerial imaging to asses seagrass extent. Many other factors can contribute to how accurate the images are; large amounts of macro algal cover can present itself as seagrass when in fact it is not. The increased resolution and frequency of aerial imaging in recent times must also be accounted for. Eco-moorings certainly aren’t detrimental to anyone and may even help boaters stay safe!

Not a marine biologist, and I don't know what "damage" dragging anchors do to habitat for seahorses in seagrass, but I do wonder how a big chunk of concrete (or whatever else they are dropping as a mooring anchor (plus the various metals rusting or dropping off the mooring chain) is better. It just seems that a much smaller anchor and chain temporarily resting on the bottom (and only occasionally dragging) when a boat is anchored, might be less intrusive than a permanent mooring. I like your vlog, well done. You (three) seem to be having fun, especially Hank. Far winds and may you find safe harbor and good holding wherever you roam. Bob on s/v Wild Rose
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Bob. I think the moorings themselves are actually rope which holds the float and then that is somewhere screwed down into the actual seabed itself rather than a concrete block. I think that is part of what makes them 'eco moorings'. Take that with a pinch of salt, I'm certainly no expert, just trying to get a feel for everything that's been going on with this situation as quickly as I can.
@Lightw81
@Lightw81 2 жыл бұрын
It's the chain sweeping over the seabed, as the boat rides to the shifting wind/tide that does the damage. Anchoring over seagrass is prohibited in some of the Mediterranean islands on pain of substantial fines. Brits are being asked to agree to a voluntary agreement. Dom refers to "environmentalists" rather than ecologists, which suggests the matter is one of opinion. On the subject of opinion how many times have I heard that Poole harbour is the third largest natural "harbour" in the world? Is the Chesapeake bay a harbour? Hudson bay? Given that Poole is too shallow for any boat on KZfaq over much of its area ... well, you get my drift.

@@STRUTZKOFF yes, I know, we tied up there last September. I was talking about a conventional anchor with chain rode. If the wind and tide didn't change direction the damage would be minimal, but once you factor in the swinging you are creating an underwater crop circle. Whether this is detrimental to the Zostera beds is a hotly debated and somewhat partisan topic, but intuitively it seems destructive in the same way scallop dredging is.

Literally this video featured my adolescent summer playground. Studland, Swanage and the Purbecks. God's Own Country IMO! Your video certainly did it justice with a wee bit of slow-mo, to boot! 1:48 Curious, are you quite certain they're lobster pots and not crab pots? I live in a fishing village in Newfoundland and both are harvested; lobster pots here are always set very close to shore (sometimes just 10 or 15 feet off) in what's called the landwash, where it's rocky and kelp-y, as this is the bottom (our) lobsters like; whereas our crab pots are set about 20 miles off. All will be revealed later this month, as it's a friend of mines business and this was one of his new prototypes that he let me try, which I've since bought off of him because I love it so much, and couldn't bare to set sail again without it, ha ha. Although each time I bring it back I take it into the shower with me to rinse under fresh water as it'd be heart breaking to see it rust. I'm wondering if it'll eventually be an ornament on the wall that I treasure and I'll go back out into the water with a cheap plastic gun again 🤣

I honestly feel that it's just another method to milk boaters from their hard earned cash. I've been a diving UK waters for over 35 years and can say sea grass is definitely on the rise but so are the water temperatures (see the pattern). No one anchors by choice into seagrass areas unless you want to risk dragging. Plus the majority of yachties are the most environmentally conscious, eco friendly people out there.
@SVImpavidus

And how long before the "Eco" moorings are £15 a night and it is a no anchoring zone? Like parts of the Med it is another Green money spinner. Take a look at some of our videos where the seagrass is 4ft high on the beaches in the winter as it all dies off, there is no fish life in sea because its fished out and moorings are now 30 euro's a night. Or you get moved on and told to go to the local marina...... Follow the money. Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid.

Hey guys, good to see you. I think your concerns echo those of many who believe that this is simply the thin end of the wedge to ban anchoring and cash in on those wanting to visit the bay. I certainly hope that’s not the case, but more and more anchorages seem to be charging these days and it’s a trend that I can’t see reversing as the boating lobby isn’t exactly huge 🥺🙏⛵️

@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
So far they're really making all the difference to our ability to harvest the power we need. The top and bottom panel are really strong looking for semi flexible panels, the middle one is more lightweight and flexible, so when the wind gets up to the mid 20knt range, I take the panels back down. That would be my only feedback to Flin Solar at this point, maybe have all three panels the same as the top and bottom one for strength, but again the system is working well, it's brilliant for low light especially morning and evening, easy to put up and take down, and is very lightweight when all packed away, so very manageable for one person. I think t's a great option for people who perhaps don't want huge solar arrays permanently installed, maybe they feel it would ruin the look of their boat, or the weight ratio etc and just like the idea of being able to generate decent amounts of power when they're anchored up? Will be keen to see how they're holding up in a years time too, and we will keep the feedback coming.

@@webheadusa9377 yes you can rotate the panels 180 degrees to face flat port or starboard, facing straight up and everything in between. Moorings, and the reasoning behind them, is to justify monetising the seabed and removing another avenue for people to have a 'freebie' lifestyle: vanlife is also being cracked down on...Poole is another place that is now just a field of moorings, with large areas unsuitable for anchoring as it's too shallow.... Enjoyed the matter of fact explanation of a contentious issue...as regards the Med and seagrass the habitat is being devastated due to a foreign invasion of seagrass that came from the outwash of a 'environmental seapark' and due to lack of natural predators it's displacing the indigenous seagrass, which will have a devastating effect on the food chain (this was caused by marine biologists, so education doesn't equal common sense)

I would say it would be a good idea to do a test bed and plow up an area that your grass is growing and see if that's what's happening but instead of doing it with an anchor ask the environmentalists to actually get the people to go down there and do a test square meter of space or you know 10 m of space on the sea floor and just like plow the sand see if the Grass grows if the Grass grows then obviously the anchoring has been not detrimental but a good thing but if they want to like you know maybe you could like reach a compromise in like set mornings and then have divers go down there to like make sure the seahorses have a good environment to live in and you know it'd be probably nice for they probably like the fact that their areas growing especially if you've got 50 years of evidence of those seabeds growing I mean that would be a good thing right.

Regarding the eco-moorings ............. I think the answer is self-explanatory around 9 minutes on the video when you enter the underwater world. That underwater world belongs to "your dinner", the sea-grasses, the seaweeds and the countless other creatures of that world we wouldn't exactly be too chuffed if they came up and ruined our world. Surely we can take some responsibility and readily accept that this eco-mooring is a much more eco-friendly method. I guess it's not difficult to imagine laying on a beach, soaking up the sun and imagine your world suddenly destroyed by a huge anchor chain rolling across the beach and ruining your day ....... same effect as what we are doing to those who live below when we anchor .............. You don't have to be a marine biologist to work this out .......... the anchor chain rolling around the seabed is akin to the indiscriminate artillery fire currently happening in the Ukraine !!!!

I shamelessly adore both of you-and the Cadoha video series-but as a loyal subscriber AND as a career-long editor of magazines and books, I have a REAL problem with the misleading "sensationalist" headlines/titles you're using, presumably to attract viewers. "No More ANCHORING" is a case in point. Most viewers will think, "WHAT??? Carly and Dom aren't going to anchor Cadoha ever again?" But that is NOT the subject or point of this nice, rather benign video. Instead, the only connection to your "WOW!" headline/title is a brief discussion of a local controversy over the health of the eelgrass beds in the anchorage. Being misleading strikes me as COMPLETELY counter to everything you two believe in and are trying to do with this wonderful series on living aboard. Just give this some thought, okay? I know you'll make the right decision. Best, Chris

There is no valid research that shows anchoring of leisure boats affects the growth of UK common eelgrass and some evidence from Scandinavia that moderate disruption actually helps seeding. What popular "evidence" has been used to support these measures often shows no understanding of the difference between anchoring and mooring or, perhaps deliberately, cites research concerning quite different slow growing, species and related habitats. It would be so easy to a construct a decisive experiment that we can only assume that some people have a vested interest in ignorance. Perhaps those people who seem to be getting addicted to wielding power through scientific ignorance......or as they prefer to call it: The Precautionary Principle. Basically whatever photographs, evidence and arguments are put forward in review, in the final analysis the untested views of fundamentalists are carried forward. The cack handed way Studland has been handled is a disgrace. The no anchor zone has no foundation in Science, even if it it did there is zero information for sailors in marinas and yacht clubs and no on the water buoyage. Doubtless our quango experts will say the voluntary zone has failed and seek to bring in daft legislation to criminalize water users and alienate people even more. A sad farce.
