My teeth have always been darker than most. None of the whiteners ever worked for me. A few years ago we went to the Mutter museum in Philadelphia. They have a large collection of human skulls. I noticed that there are many different shades of bone, and the teeth color matches that of the skull. Since then, I don't care that my teeth aren't bright white.

7:14 Chemist's thought on the jar label hack: Actually, water works better for some labels and oil for others depending on the glue base. Water is easier so it is worth trying first -sometimes the glue just dissolves. But if then you still have some glue left, you can smear some oil on it and leave it for a few hours and you should be able to clean it with a cloth and then just wash the jar normally, as you would do with any other dishes. Not sure what the baking soda is for? Maybe for scrubbing?

Agreed! If you’re using glass jars, boiling water has worked best for me. I just put the boiling water in the jar first and let it heat up the glue to release the label. Then you can remove the leftovers with oil. Don’t recommend boiling water for plastic jars though 🤪 That’s where I think the solution works really well is for removing the glue from plastic jars.
@kriscox4019
@kriscox4019 3 жыл бұрын
Ok as a self-proclaimed label remover expert 😏, the type of glue and material of label all take different removal methods. Some are best to s-l-o-w-l-y remove dry (once the label gets wet, it’s much harder). Some, it’s good to put boiling water inside the jar to soften the glue and then remove. Some are good to soak in water. And then some, peel off as much as you can, rub any oil and leave, then scrub off. The baking soda is to help absorb the oil and glue when washing the oil off. So the answer to ‘what’s the best way to take off labels’ is ‘it depends’.

I’ve been using basking soda and xylitol for teeth brushing for over a decade. My husband has been using it for 6 years. My dentists (yes, more than one since I’ve moved cities) have always approved of it. Baking soda is actually LESS abrasive than many commercial toothpastes. Xylitol has been shown to help with oral health. I’ve tried mixing it with coconut oil (which is really there to make it a ‘paste’ as opposed to a powder) but it ultimately isn’t necessary, clogs sink pipes and makes it more expensive. Brushing your teeth is more about the brushing than it is the product so toothpaste is not a miracle product (this is why dentists talk about brushing with the right technique and proper amount of time). I agree and appreciate how you say, do what’s best for your own teeth. 🙌🏼 So everyone should do what they feel best with. 👍🏼 Just remember that toothpaste companies are there to sell you toothpaste so they have a vested interest.

I was also a skeptic when it comes to DIY tooth paste and oil pulling so I did some research a while back and found that most of the literature about oil pulling was from using sesame oil (if I recall correctly, it stems from Indian culture)- not coconut oil. During this research I also came across a theory that the trendy use of coconut in oil pulling (and well, for everything else) is in result of the coconut crop poor sales in previous years. With coconut oil becoming the star of a lot of health claims within the last couple of decades- this wouldn’t surprise me. Just somethings to think about! Loved this video!

Dyeing with onion skins works really well. You need to extract the dye from the skins by simmering for a couple hours first. Then strain the skins out and simmer the cloth in the dye for a couple more hours. To get green dye instead of the usual yellow orange from onions, you can mordant with iron. Just toss some iron nails in the dye bath… also use way more than one onion skin if you want a bright dye… it’d be fun to see you try this again with better instructions. Natural dyeing creates beautiful colors…

I just want to say in regard to natural dyes-- there is a whole world of beautiful, colorful, vibrant shades you can get from natural materials. Often times, however, the quick tutorials you find online don't even begin to scratch the surface of how to properly dye things with natural materials. It is possible to get unexpected colors from things-- but there is a whole SCIENCE to dyeing. Metals and salts are often added to the dye bath to adjust the the vibrancy or hue of a dye. I just don't want people to become discouraged from continuing to learn, as natural dyes are fascinating. But they are not particularly simple. The world before synthetic dyes was also a colorful, beautiful world.
@pv9415

vinegar and baking soda together don't really do much because vinegar is acid while baking soda is basic so the reaction we see (the bubbles and fizzing) is actually just a chemical reaction of neutralisation. I know many people use the two together but even just using only vinegar or baking soda with water would have the same cleaning effect.

Another reason to remove labels from jars is if you are using them to buy from your bulk store, the cashier may actually scan the barcode on the label. This happened to me when I used an old jar at Sprouts that still had the label on it. Luckily we caught the error, but I almost got charged $15 for a $4 jar of nuts! @@vegronica9006 I know. I didn’t always have this luxury. And it shouldn’t be a luxury. We should all have this kind of access. I don’t hear of people getting ill left and right from bulk sections. If you think about it, a lot of fruit and veg come unpackaged and people have to just grab it with their hands. In the bulk sections where you can get nuts, flours, seeds, beans, rice, etc., they have scoops or they pour out of a container straight into yours. Plus a lot of things I get from the bulk section, I cook before I eat it, so it would kill off germs.

I actually saved the pouch caps from kid pouches for a LONG time. My son played with them in the salad spinner often and then after I couldn't think of what to use them for so I posted on my buy nothing group and someone picked them up for her preschool for counting games. Before anyone gets at me, I mostly made my own baby and kid food and highly recommend reusable pouches. But I do buy them sometimes for convenience and even that adds up. I'm not proud of buying them but I did. I also collected and donated a bunch to a person making a mural out of caps.

I actually used the bottle 'hack'. The idea is to use the heat of fire and the cold of water to cut the bottle. The best way is to fill in the bottle to close to where you want to cut it with cold water. Also fill a bucket with water so that when you put the bottle, it is at the same level (like 2 cm below the rope). Then you soak the rope is something flammable (we used alcohol). Put in the bucket and set fire. Once the fire is out, twist rise the bottle. It should come out clean. It is dangerous, of course. Do this outside and have loads of water at hand to put out the fire. Be super careful with the flammable liquid.

I totally understand what you said about oral hygiene and zero-waste. I've had problems with my gums and I'm a bit scared to try zero-waste alternatives because I've found a type of toothpaste that actually helps my problem. As for toothbrushes, I've tried the bamboo one and it was fine but I find that a toothbrush with interchangeable brush heads is much better from a waste standpoint - in the end with a bamboo toothbrush if you don't need to repurpose the handle you end up throwing the whole thing away because not all composting facilities accept wood pieces and the bristles need to be thrown away in any case. Now I have the same handle that is going to last for a long time and I only need to change the bristles every few months. It's always important to remember that no matter how important it is to live a sustainable life, it is also important to take care of our health, and teeth problems can cause serious issues with other parts of our bodies.

Paola, I’m with ya on the bamboo toothbrush thing. I have a small mouth and jaw, and I’ve had a lot of complicated orthodontic surgery and also braces for 6 years in my youth. I find that the friction of a wooden toothbrush in my mouth and the big head of bristles is just a “no go” for me. I applaud the idea of a toothbrush consisting of a reusable handle with a change-out bristle system. In past conversation with Eduarda here in the comments section of Immy’s videos she tells me this type of toothbrush is available in some European countries. I’m waiting and watching for the day they become available here in 🇨🇦. I also agree with you that healthy teeth are everything. I trust the pros when it comes to my oral health. 🦷🪥😄

I think the onion colouring should be made differently. When I was small, my mother dyed eggs for Easter holidays. She bought all the onion "shells" she found at the supermarket (previously she had collected onion shells for whole year to dye one pot of eggs). So it was a lot, not just one onion. And it was brown colour because white onions were used. Then it was boiled for circa 40 minutes on low heat. Most of the fabrics are not suited to be boiled, so I would start by boiling really concentrated dye, then put the fabric inside and be there for a long time. (I don't have any idea if it works, but that's something I've been planing to try)

I have had a lot of good results from oil pulling. we only did it once a month or less in my family and i have a smaaaall mouth so it didnt take a lot it works because a lot of things are *oil soluable* and so the oil helps desolve it, and then a minor abrasive after like toothpaste and a toothbrush can easily get everything thats on there off easier. Thats just my experience.

I totally love the Bite toothbrush, it’s compostable except for the staple that holds the brittles in. The bristles are the perfect firmness for me. Its pretty much just like using a “normal” toothpaste. I like the Bite toothpaste tabs as well I hate toothpaste because it always feels slimy to me, and the tabs don’t have that problem. I wish that it had fluoride, but it doesn’t. I use a fluoride rinse instead, and that keeps my teeth (and my dentist) happy.

I feel like the word "hack" and sustainability don't go together that well. Being sustainable is so much about a lifestyle and a long term proces, and I feel like a quick fix just isn't going to cut it, as we can tell fr most of the hacks in this video. Also "hack"-thinking just seems really capitalistic to me somehow? Lol

To make work the natural dye you first have to use animal or plant base fiber, then do a preparation of this fiber to make the color stay in the fiber, for this you mordent the cloth, usually with allum. Also you usually need 1:1( the weight of the color and the weight of the cloth) ex: 300gr of onion skin = 300gr of the piece of fabric. This can change depending of how strong is the dye but usually it is like this. Also there are some colors that are "fugitive" so not all them are good for dye and have a good result.

@esztopiros
@esztopiros 3 жыл бұрын
OMG, as a plant dyer I cringed on your attempt to dye without a proper mordant and let it just soak :D You can definitely create beautiful, solid colors but you need mordant, have to prepare the color first, and then cook the plant (or animal) fiber and actually boil it+let it cool for a day. And- red onion doesn't give you pink color, but brownish.

I would enjoy this being a series, by the way, especially if there's a focus on what we can do instead, if it doesn't work, or what are the sensible alternatives to common problematic things in the zero-waste community, like DIY tooth paste and sunscreen (leave it to the professionals!), or even how to make safe period pads or re-usable masks (since those can be done properly, but there's a load of misinformation or people skimming over important factors, like having adequate filters or cleaning re-usable pads in a safe way (women getting infections from homemade period care is actually a big problem in India).

With the onion skin, just a little thought here. I don’t know what the recipe said, but you are supposed to boil the water with the onion skins in and leave the cloth in overnight. It will eventually turn it red. This is how we dye our easter eggs every year.(we dont boil the eggs with the skins, we cook them beforehand, and we just let them soak in the dye for the night, they all turn out beautiful!) you can actually dye cloths the same way, but obviously it won’t be very long lasting ome you wash it a few times. But as a heads up, this actually works ☺️

I am also no fan of diy toothpaste and oil pulling. I tried several dent tabs and toothpastes filled in glasses without fluoride, but sometimes they are not minty enough to give you the feeling of freshly brushed teeth. I also tried the bamboo toothbrush; but it is not for me either, because my gums get sore. If I want to get rid of stickers on the glass containers I also use water and let the container with the sticker soak in it for a while or for stubborn glue I take essential lemon oil on a rag to remove it.

I have a condition called dentogenesis imperfecta that makes my teeth very brittle, some of my teeth don’t have any enamel so they need to put plastic seals on them. I need extensive dental work atleast once a year and because, as you might guess, it’s also very painful to fracture and fix your teeth all the time, so I just give up and get some of the problematic ones pulled. I am doing what I can to lower my impact, but I will never ever compromise my health or body in the name of sustainability! It feels bad to know the waste and resources behind my dental work, with all the fills, tools, materials and chemicals, retainers etc. I also need a certain toothpaste that has flouride that comes in a non-recyclable plastic tube, I did switch to a bamboo toothbrush and will see what my dentist thinks about it at my checkup but if she thinks my teeth look worse in any way I will switch back to a plastic one. It’s also hard not being able to eat sustainably all the time because things like certain meats and meat substitutes, fruits and veggies, anything that has a pit or seed can break my teeth. I’ve broken teeth and tooth seals on apples, grapes, carrots and even a smoothie that had berry seeds in it. I really feel like we need to speak more on the stigma surrounding waste in regards to ones health. Whether it’s medicine in non-recyclable packaging, getting a cast, IV treatments, hospital stays, syringes, pumps, test strips and other diabetes related waste. It’s absolutely not worth the risk of compromising your health in the name of sustainability.

I'm confused about how natural and zero-waste cleaning guides/hacks all suggest recipes that combine vinegar and baking soda. As in, even really sophisticated-looking, published books. These are completely different pHs that should neutralise one another. Separately, they target different types of germs completely, but this shouldn't occur if combined. Honestly, I'd love to make cleaning basics, but even a basic knowledge of chemistry has me freaking confused about what the majority of the community is doing to clean??? HELP.

I would like suggestions of where I can put my old tech (I have two phones that won't switch on any more, wired headphones, bluetooth headphones, I know my parents have laptop that isn't usable any more) so that it gets recycled! I am based in Germany. I know there is a company that collects tech in boxes and then tries to repair it, if that's not possible they seperate and sell individual material, but the next box is 250 km away and driving all the way wouldn't be very eco friendly either

i had bad teeth from using diy toothpaste (i was so poor it was tempting that way). Soda or salt are too abrasive for tooth enamel: you've only got so much. In terms of plastic, toothpaste tubes & brushes don't bother me, i work in shops, the packaging and wholesale packaging is unbelievable. It's almost as big in quantity as the actual stuff sold in the shops. We have 'eco' sunglasses and clothes, but all the packaging? Worse than before. I have a wood-handled toothbrush or two, the size takes some getting used to but i discussed them with the dentist and he agreed (and he's Romanian, so no hippy influence there) they're as good as the plastic-handled ones. I want to tax all single-use plastic - all plastic - say 20% EXCEPT healthcare, so that would include seatbelts, baby bottles, nappies, and potties, dental floss, medical equipment, etc. Some plastics used by disabled eg tubes for drinking would be tax-free on prescription from doctor/chemist. Only exception in my extensive thinking so far would be some large water containers used in cleaning as buckets, washing-up tubs. Lots of wasteful single-use cleaning plastic, so necessary to be clear. Jerry cans, bath tubs; i can't think of a good substitute large liquid carrying substance. Another possible exception could be 100% recycled plastic? Also, electric insulation. Every other single method doesn't work when i analyse it. Also, next year, we've really got to reboot plastic free July :((( mia

I really like bamboo toothbrushes (electric is another option if you'll use it long-term), and I appreciate that they're often softer, which is what I need, but I have a lot of teeth issues too, so I completely understand where you're coming from with toothpaste and dental hygiene in general... I would love to hear feedback with silicone ultrasonic toothbrushes, if anyone has used a Foreo toothbrush, etc. Anyhow, here's some zero-waste toothpaste advice from someone who has struggled: You can now find some fluoride-containing toothpastes from zero-waste manufacturers, including those that are strictly pastes instead of tabs. Fluoride-containing tabs are still more common than pastes. Here's one option, but do some Googling (Ben & Anna, www.plasticfreeamsterdam.com/products/natural-toothpaste-with-fluoride-100ml-sensitive-orange). Georganics is also a particularly nice zero-waste toothpaste company that is responding to customer feedback by producing a fluoride-free jarred paste, too. These are bicarb-based, but I personally like that flavour in a formulated product. I actually find it milder than commercial strong spearmints, etc. But that's totally subjective! Personally, I'm not comfortable with tooth tabs, because my teeth are quite delicate and I don't like crushing tablets with them. I also think that some brands are very brittle and scratch the enamel, depending on how good the formula is. There are perfectly valid, dentist-approved tooth tabs, though. Again, anything that you buy in this area, run by your dentist if you can--or ask them to spend some time looking at some options during your next appointment. Honestly, if I can't get zero-waste fluoride toothpaste, and that will be the case for a lot of folks ongoingly, I just buy the best toothpaste for my health and then recycle through Terracycle. In Australia at least, Colgate has a Terracycle program that applies to ANY dental products from ANY dental brand. You can go into participating dentists (I would say this is most dentists in Melbourne at least) to drop them off. Check what programs are available to you locally.

Unless you're talking about the company Foreo, which would... also be disappointing but even less surprising. Since I wrote this, I've seen bamboo electric toothbrushes (these all seem to be mass-manufactured in China, but so are plastic electrics, I guess). Colgate in Australia has also launched a curbside recyclable plastic tube (not ideal, but I hope the others are phased out altogether) that also comes in FSC cardboard that's not shiny.
