In this video, I leave my 11-month-old Doberman alone with free roam of my house for HOURS! I also check in on him remotely via the Petcube remote pet camera to see what he's up to. This is the first time doing this with my dog Arlo, and man is it scary! I'll also discuss the "Three Phases of Trust" that will allow you to reach the point of being able to leave your Doberman loose inside your home while you're away. This can be while you're at work or just while you're gone for a short time. Owning a Doberman and working full time is tough! But this is how you can have a fully self-sufficient Doberman who can be left to roam free inside your home while you're gone all day-no crate or pen needed!

Did anyone else's heart completely break to see how long Arlo waited for John to come back through the door?? That's it, I'm never leaving the house again. I can't break my dobie's heart. lol That intro was awesome by the way! Hahahahaha!

Haha thank you! And yeah it broke MY heart that's for sure! Poor pup. He did really good though overall. Except climbing up on the couch (he knows he should only come up if invited) but if that's the worst thing he does while I'm gone.. I'm happy!

Mark Williams I too have left my Doberman home alone.... as you say for about 8 hours or normal work day. But god forbid if I don’t come home after work or go to a friends house for dinner, she will take her frustration/ separation anxiety to the next level. She chewed thru my sweaters, gnarled the grips on my golf clubs, ( they are smart, golf is my next love which takes hours away from her) and slashed my album collection. As long as I come home, give her some love, quality time she’s good for another few hours; but lord help you if you don’t return immediately after work (8-9hours). She will tear down the curtains, rip the pillows apart and pee in your bed on purpose. She’s like a jealous wife.

We had two Dobies when I was growing up. And the ones that we had were European Dobies because the U.S. hadn't screwed up the breed at that time. Our dogs had full roaming privileges and never destroyed a thing.

Got my first Doberman. He's had free roam about a month now. We'll free roam downstairs and to the backyard. He's doing great. No accidents or destruction yet. I work 12 to 16 hour days sometimes. I do have family or friends come by for an hour in the afternoons just to ease his boredom. But he does amazing. He'll be 6 months in a couple of days

GREAT VIDEO JOHN 👍🏻👍🏻 7 decades of dog ownership and I’ve become a believer in keeping your dogs safe. A) My Doberman has her own room 10x10. B) Her crate is there, and a floor bed. 3) No door just a gate. When I leave she goes to her room, she’s got her crate & bed to choose from. I leave her only “hard” toys to crew. 4) This room has been home to 4 other dogs. 5) No dog has ever been harmed in 2 decades with this setup.

I left my dog alone after 6 months. Not for long. But did longer and longer for each time. Now he is soon 5 years old. He only chewed in a corner of a chair. And tp cable. He still takes empty tp rolls and massacre them. But other than that. Only messes up the bed. I live in a apartment with a rottweiler. Impossible to let friends take him out cause he wont let anyone in unless im with them. Then its chill. Even if its my dad. Wich he loves more than me when we visit my parents haha! But yeah as you say. Step by step! And when I found out he cut the cable and the chair (same day, same session I was gone). I took the cable and the chair. Put them in the bathroom. And said "same on you" but in swedish and abit more vocal. Let him stay there 30 mins. Since that only empty tp rolls. Kinda proud of him! :D Also your dog is such a fine doggo!

Thanks for the kind words Michael! Hey... got to pay the bills somehow right? To be fair, I've made it a habit of saying "no" to sponsors thus far (this is the first truly sponsored video I've done) because I don't generally like it either. But I figured I'd give one a shot and something like this Petcam is something that a lot of Dobie owners get and use anyway so it felt like a good fit. Plus I think it really did make this video more fun to be able to check on Arlo while I was away from the house and record his reactions from the camera. Anything else I've mentioned in my videos so far have been things I use myself and were definitely not sponsorships. Anyway I appreciate you being here Mike and putting up with the occasional sponsor... I'll try to keep it to a very rare occasion and only something that really ads to the video.... :-D

My appartment has 25 m2 and do not have any doors inside. I always got my dobie well exercised so he was just satisfied and lay down and all cool. Then I left. NEVER a problem, and what you said about the bladder does not seem to be correct for mine either, he could hold it for much longer. I installed a camera in the appartment and all he did was chewing on a safe bone, drank som water and slept. I got narcolepsy after the svine flue so once in a while when I got no warning I slept for 23 hours. No accidents....

That's great that you're having such a good experience. Totally agree about the exercise thing... really makes a big difference. I've heard of dogs going 7 or 8 hours without issues (depending on how much they drink). But I've personally never heard of 23 hours! I'm sure they can go a long time if they're just sleeping but that seems like SO long to me! Anyway, really glad you have a system that works for you which is really the best thing anyone can hope for!

Dobermans love comfort! John I bought industrial sized safety pins and pinned a blanket down to a futon I bought for Kaiser. I bought tons of extra padding and layered it in the futon first, but you don't need to do that. Kaiser has an actual My Pillow in it as well. Thanks a lot, John, for making these helpful videos about Doberman dogs! My family and I plan to get one, but we're not sure if we're ready, so these videos teach us a lot. I have a few questions, though. 1. What things in the house do you need to get rid of or put away before getting a Doberman dog? For example, wires, cleaning supplies, long curtains? 2. What stores do you go to to buy food, toys, pens/cages, and bowls for the dog? Thanks again for all the helpful videos! Neat video! Looks like a good gift idea for someone I know. Three of my dogs are spoiled; we've always been able to do a dog door to a huge backyard and not once have any of them done damage in the house. Nor have their predecessors. But now we've the adopted doberboy who just turned a year old and came crate trained, but will get into things and annoy the other dogs without our intervention. We've slept with him out of the crate for about a month now, but we're not ready to leave him out without us home yet lol Maybe by this time next year, and then we'll need cameras, too :)

Hey John Walter, you’ve got great contact about my favorite dog breed but can you make an video related about how to get a Doberman pincher in United States and ship it outside the country and tips of how to know the health of the dog and if it’s suitable for family.

I will definitely invest in one of these cameras. We have not left our 6 month old dobie alone but we will have to soon. And this camera will be a big help. Thank you John! 👍😊 Arlo is just a great dog. He is a good boy! You trained him well.

Mine is six and a half months old. I ordered a smart cam a couple days ago. But I have a 7 year old dog too, and think together alone might go mad with each other 😱. Yep definitely buy one to check your pup out 👍

Of course! And thank you so much, Arlo tries hard for sure. He has his "off days" for sure, but mostly he's a great dog!

This video is amazing. We can’t trust our dobie Hunter with anything. We can’t let him Rome around the house by himself even if we are there with him. He’ll try to bite something or get on the couch. We can’t give him a bed or a blanket cause he loves biting it even if we give him his favorite toy. Thanks for making these videos because they really help a lot.

I usually crate til they are at least 2. I left my 14month old Dobe out in the bedroom when I fell asleep. When I woke up it looked like the neighborhood kids had teepeed my bedroom. Sky never broke the roll i was impressed. Good thing toilet paper is back in the stores. She's sleeping back in her crate for awhile longer.

It's cool to be able to trust them should they be left alone to roam free but when we got our dog we were told that emergency responders such as Police or Fire are more likely to remove an animal from an emergency situation if it is crated than they are to chase or try and locate an animal that is free, also stops the animal from fleeing in a situation like that and getting lost. I can see the benefits to both sides and in the end we all have to do what we think is right for our own situations. Just sharing the information I got, food for thought. :)

You're right! I realized that after the video was released. Thank you! He grabbed that little stuffed elephant for a minute and just mouthed it a few times but that was it. Didn't destroy it.... I think he was just feeling it and checking it out. Besides that the only thing he did was get on the couch which, if that's the worst thing he does, I'm more than happy!
