In residency, we had a measure of the likelihood of following medical advice and/or the likelihood of acquiring certain conditions: it was the tattoo:tooth, or tattoo to tooth ratio. If the ratio resulted in a whole number, that probability was virtually 100% that they wouldn't follow through and/or they would get diagnosed with an unfortunate malady.

Early nineties I told docs in a low/no income clinic I had none of the high-risk behaviours, I was married long-term monogamous, no need to test for what they were going to test for. A Doc or Nurse said my tattoos were associated with high-risk behaviours and blood bourne pathogens. I told them “my tattoo artist has an autoclave. You guys don’t have an autoclave in this clinic. My tattoo artist friend: his work area is FAR FAR cleaner than this clinic, and even botond the autoclave, he cleans with germ-killing solutions that sit for periods of time on the chairs and tables before they get wiped down. And while it’s true that anti-microbial washing-up liquids don’t kill viruses, viruses can be washed away. That’s why we practice good handwashing…. “ The medical people were so so surprised. I think they had some prejudices, and didn’t expect me to come out with a long speech about my artist-friend’s cleanliness.

Don’t forget to document to the tooth to tattoo ratio. Inverse tooth to tattoo ratios are diagnostic for poly substance abuse…
