Should you get your dog's tail docked? Today, we talk all about the pros and cons of docking your dog's tail. In this video, I have a debate against myself! That's right! I take BOTH sides of the Doberman tail docking (also known as tail bobbing) issue. We'll discuss issues like pain, balance issues, communication issues, tail breakage, and of course the Doberman breed standard. This video should help make your decision easier as to whether to get your Doberman's tail docked or not. Please remember that it's a big world out there and while tail docking is illegal in some countries, it's incredibly commonplace in others (like in the U.S.). So be kind to each other in the comments because your culture may not be the same as other cultures when it comes to tail bobbing (or docking).

I’ve been binge watching your videos all week now and I love your videos! I don’t even have a doberman, but I love learning about the breed and you make it so enjoyable! I actually have a slight fear of larger dogs due to a dog bite I got when I was in middle school (I still have a scar). I still love dogs, just a little wary :). But like I said before, thank you for the great quality and entertaining videos, love learning about these amazing dogs! Learning is a great way to combat fear

Me too. I don't have a dog but I've been enjoying all his videos tremendously and when I'm ready to get a dog it will be doberman because I fell that doberman are built like black men while rottweiler are built like white men. I love doberman they are too cute and yet strong and ferocious when they need to.

look for a dog that you fear the most, and make sure to ask someone if they have that kind of dog, but one who's much more friendlier. I had to do that years ago, and my fear has been gone for thirty plus years now. I just don't go near dogs that are without people, or I ask first if I can pat the dog, animal lovers sometime get to do that with the okay of strangers. Just ask someone and tell them why, and they will help you learn how to approach the dog in the right way. Some might be scared if they don't even trust their own dog to that degree, and they will probably tell you it's not a good idea. If the person knows exactly how the dog will be with strangers, then he or she will show you how to pat the dog and interact with his/her twirling and twisting ways they move their body around, when being scratched in the right places. That usually helps make the dog a real friend really fast. They communicate differently to us humans, and if they like to be touched and petted, let your hand do the talking and the dog will show you where to scratch and pat him or her. Much like a cat will in its ways, if you've ever seen cats rub up against someone and twirl around and around when you pat them is like them speaking back to us....... xox

I am anti docking and cropping, the natural look of a dog is good, and only if for medical reasons, the tail should stay on

I have a brown doberman, I can't imagine removing her tail or ears. Her floppy ears and wagging tail are adorable. Less people are afraid of a natural doberman compared to a modified doberman. Not to mention I would miss out when I am on the bed/couch and I see that curly tail circling me like a shark.

I've got a rescued Cropped & Docked Dobermann, its a really bizarre to think someone paid to surgically mutilate his ears and tail, just to make him look mean. Its a lot of suffering and trauma for a young dog to go through.. Even now as a 7 year old he has difficulty with pain in his ears when its cold out.. Despite what he's been through he's a big gentle darling of a dog..

@Scott Riddell problem is if your dogs are neutered, it's the same as docking a tail or cropping there ears so, unless you completely have a natural dog. It's kinda hypocritical

@@bigt8066 , I’m 100% against it, neutering a dog controls the population.. cutting its ears and tail off is done just to achieve a look.. It’s stupid and cruel and thankfully illegal in the UK.. The dog I have was imported from Bulgaria already mutilated by an asshole who wanted a “tougher” looking dog.. Mutilating a dog for your own vanity is bizarre behaviour and absolutely disgusting.

Personally, I have my dog not for its "intended purpose" but as a companion. Also, I don't really care if my dog doesn't conform to the breed standard. I just think undocked tails look better

I loved how you actually researched the pros and cons of cropping the dogs. Other KZfaq channels would have only told the pros of what they liked and cons of what they disliked, and you did the opposite you showed an all around opinion which is AMAZING!!! At the end of the day weather it’s a a Dobermann with docked tail cropped ears or a Dobermann with a natural tail and ears, It’s still a Dobermann. There character is still the same.

I would have a hard time educating a dog with no tail, that's 50% of body language, it's much harder to detect (for me at least for my level of experience) if the dog about to attack other dogs without the tail language. The tail will telegraph sometimes multiples minutes in advance aggression, that's a good feature on such a powerful dog

that's kind of an odd argument though.. There are plenty of dogs that have naturally bobbed tails, or a strange curl tail (pugs) and yet people and other dogs seem to be able to work with them just fine.... Also, is the tail really that much of body language? It seems like every time I read what a tail motion means it's coupled with 'but it can also mean *something else * so look at the rest of the body language '. On the other side of the coin, I've never heard anyone describe the over all body or the ears, but then add 'oh but look at the tail to be sure'. .... I don't know, maybe I'm crazy but I best read my dogs' by their overall body, and their face (including ears). I rarely notice the tail unless it's doing something particular (like full circle wags ) and even then it's only on occasion.

@@saribeepo.o5111 there is 1 singular breed that is born without even a nub for a tailbone. The Corgis. Any other breed has tails, or a “nub” or “stump”. That still doesn’t eliminate the scientific evidence and facts that tails help animals to communicate. As Bobcats and Lynx’s are mostly solitary mammals that do not need to be in a pack/herd. their communication is not refined or even, needed in most aspects. Tails are also used for balance and things of that nature. Bobs, Lynx’s, etc. mostly hunt on ground, they do not need these tails to help them to hunt. Dogs without tails(natural or not) have issues communicating. This is why so many Frenchies, Boston’s, etc. have such issues behaviorally. Imagine trying to say it to someone but all you can do is flip them off since that’s the only finger left on your hands. That’s a gross oversimplification but, that’s essentially what it’s like. Signals become confusing and other dogs can’t read/understand YOUR dog. It’s not about YOU reading your dog. Your dog also has to be able to read other dogs and vice versa. Otherwise you end up with an aggressive or anxiety ridden animal that shows signs of distress when around anyone or anything other than their “human” or “sibling”. These signs can be seen and noticed easily while others, are less prone to show what they feel.

Doberman’s are such a beautiful looking dog with tails and with natural ears. Yeah they look good “modified” but I love em just they way they are. In Australia the laws changed years ago to outlaw these procedures so it takes the choice away luckily. I owned a Rottweiler that had a docked tail and it was done by the breeder, and I’ll add that it wasn’t perfect as there was a sprig of rogue long hair that grew from the stump and this was the source of many chomped flies and even the odd pigeon that strayed anywhere near his tail. Just the lightest stimulation to his tail was enough to elicit a rapid chomp at whatever was close. He was a brute of a beast in size but gentle in nature- unless you strayed into tail territory!

The tail is very weak and fragile for a doberman. Docking will prevent injury and money later down the line.

@@albertjayboyzybarra4 Never had a problem with that. But i´ve seen multiple cropped dobis laying in the mud alle the time because they weren´t able to keep up with the agility of the ones with a tail. A LOT of falling down when a cropped dobi changes direction XD

Super entertaining and informative!! The chewing the stump and misunderstood social interactions applies to my other pup who has a half-removed tail (not sure if it was docked, birth, or an accident) when we got him. No matter what breed, this is my favorite channel for information.

I’ve regretted not docking a dog in the past because they had hurt themselves hitting their tail on a wall too hard just from their excitement! Quite the bummer.

Another much needed topic for open discussion! Some potential topics for the future......Why do intact males dig? Is it strictly boredom or is it den building behavior? Just how good are males/females at judging a real threat to a benign threat? Are American Dobermans better at discerning real threats than their European counterparts? What about laws on the books about a dog protecting their owners, in an unprovoked confrontation? Thanks very much!

I had a greyhound mix and a doberman at the same time. The doberman was already docked by the breeder and we chose not to crop the ears. I must say that the greyhound mix dog could turn much tighter and faster circles when running than the doberman could. You could see how much her tail came into use for balance and stability when doing these running turns. So for overall agility I think the tail is very important. I often wonder about arguments for cropping and docking. You don't see that ,generally, on working GSD's or Malinois. They still have ears and tails that can be grabbed etc. and they seem to be the most widely used protection/police/military dogs. Clearly it is for the looks alone. The doberman breed looks great either way.

True about the other working dogs but dobes have their tails sticking out a lot more than a shep... I am really thinking it through whether or not i should dock my dog's tail, i don't think i will tbh but im worried they would hit it too hard against a hard surface or it'll get nagged somehow and hurt the poor dog :/

The problem really is that Dobes have historically had the tail docked and the ears cropped. They haven't had time to slowly genetically mod to have a thicker tail, or tougher ears. They essentially haven't needed to get there naturally cause man has done it for them. I'm also not a fan of dobes w the tail, and I'd have a very hard time going back to floppy ears, having had both, the cropped ears are just way more expressive and I think better looking.

Yeah, I think though that the breed standard has a lot to do with it. That standard was written based on the breed's original purpose (in this case protection work). Whereas the GSD's and Malinois were originally created for the purposes of herding animals. You've got some interesting points though for sure!

We've been doing some bitework w my female, so it makes sense for her, either way, wouldn't u feel silly to think your doing what's best then having a broken tail. I mean history is there for a reason, if its not to be learned from then whats the point. But also, get it done properly from a vet. The idea that a person would do this at home is frustrating.

In my opinion, I really love Dobermans which is cropped and docked because that will make them an ideal Doberman Pinscher.

I have a rescue (we aren't sure what breed, but we know it's some kind of terrier mix) and his tail was docked when we found him. I have no idea why they would dock the tail of a mix breed like him. However, I can relate to the idea of communication problems. I often look at a tail to see how the dog feels and it's a little harder to do with a docked tail. He also does NOT like you messing with it. I wish I had the ability to own a Dobe, but we just don't have the ability to put the time in. Great vids btw.

Yup, I am big on reading a dog and using that during training. So I definitely put some weight in the communication argument too.

I had a docked Doberman and his "stub" communicated a lot! Unless your Dobe's tail is docked too short you still get plenty of info communicated through it. Nothing like seeing that stub going into overdrive when the dog is excited/happy! But sure, not as easy to read other indications as a complete tail.

@@D13fs our 2 previous dobermanns did have a "moving stub", but our current dobermann has a one which has been docked too short... but on the plus side it gives me the oppertunity to learn to read all the other things better...

Really appreciate it! It's funny because the videos I do which seem to do the best are just videos about Arlo running around and being a dog. But the ones where I put a lot of work and research into so they can help more Doberman owners don't do as well. Not sure why. But honestly I love helping people the most so even if it's not the most popular, I'm going to keep doing the informative ones.

I can personally attest to both docked and dogs with unnatural "screw" tails (i.e.French bulldogs) as having their communication hindered. When our dog was young and we went to dog parks, I noticed a correlation in more frequent social disputes with the dogs that had tails like this. There are so many types of wags. Our dog is 7 now and naturally has become dog selective, we really rely his tail position and wag to determine how he's feeling about another dog when meeting them on leash.

The length of a Bulldog breed's dock is different than a Doberman's. Obviously it is WAY too short for communication. And not to mention the unnatural angle the tail comes with further hindering it. I personally think that the shape and overly-short dock of Bulldog breeds are cruel, and must be altered to become a normal, straight tail. (And I am not going to go into the shape of the face etc because that's off topic and my comment will become too long.)

Great as usual! Just one thing tghat would enhance the video! When you as the "moderator" talks to the red you you look to your right, but also when you talk to the blue you. Even though red and blu e you sits looking at each other. You should look to the right to the red and to your left to the blue. That would make it 100% Take care/Mats/ Sweden

Actually the dog can show you just as much as with an undocked tail. It still moves the same way. If he is alert the docked tail is up if he is scared its down if he is happy its wiggling. Its movement wont differ if its docked. We have 2 docked dobermans and they can show their current mood with their docked tail

Personally I like cropped better but here in the uk I wouldn’t be allowed. Still though, the soft look is adorable and cropped or uncropped dobies are beautiful dogs!!!! Also just a video idea, you could do pros and cons of getting dew claws removed as it isn’t talked about as much at tail docking and ear cropping with the breed but lots of owners may consider it! Thanks for the great video!!!

I adopt a doberman (in Portugal we have an association that only deals whit dobermans) and she comes whit her tail docked (and only 3 legs). I have to admit I never associated it whit less communication. She is not ok whit other dogs (unless they are dobermans, funny enough) so she just "talks " to me, my husband and our cats. Maybe that explains a lot ^^ thank you :)

Dogs lose more than just their tails. They lose their ability to adjust mid-air. To make sharp turns. To keep balance. To communicate. Imagine chopping off your big toe. That’s essentially what your doing, except worse! Thank you for this 💖 I’m getting a Doberman for my daughter and I and I REFUSE any mutilation to my animals.

They're not birds. They don't use their tails as rudders in the air. Their tails also aren't heavy enough to effect their balance as they move. Dogs have tails to waft scents excreted from their scent glands near the anus. When they wag their tails they waft this scent. If that was your argument, you'd have a stronger case.

Interesting how U.S and Europe differ in rules about standard of Dobies, in my country (Slovakia) its illegal to dock tails and crop ears because its considered an animal abuse, in dog shows its normal to see undocked dobies with long ears :D I think about tail docking there are some exceptions but ear cropping has no exceptions.

Yeah it is crazy the differences since here in the U.S. you almost never see a natural Dobie. In fact, most people won't recognize the dog as a Dobie if it's not both cropped and docked. Very different it seems!

Just found the channel so I'm a little behind. I've always thought it ridiculous to modify an animal for looks alone, prior to getting my red& rust girl Rouge, I didn't realize just how much of a handhold a natural tail can be. For anyone looking into protection training it may just be a good idea to doc the tail. However, on the whole I still feel leaving the tail natural is best especially for communication purposes. I also lightly grab her tail to get her attention sometimes. And a full length tail def helps with agility, and should probably be left if you are planning on agility training or competing. Natural tails are also now part of the breed standard.

I’m not sure what state you live in but I’m curious if dobies are found more in certain parts of the country or is it pretty much same straight across ? An example is we own 2 Great Pyrenees which are more prevalent it seems across the Midwest and south by live stock owners or homestead owners . Just wondering where the most dobies are found ...great channel

Hii!! Love seeing your videos!! I have a question not related to the video. when I got my puppy the breeder was giving the puppies proplan puppy lamb recipe. Ik you recommended the proplan puppy large breed chicken recipe. I wanted to know if its oki to use the lamb recipe for my Doberman puppy or should I change him to large breed? I don’t know if he is allergic to chicken. Looking forward to your response.

Wow!!!!! I just came across this channel and man I have made a total 360 turn on my thoughts of the Doberman. I though that they were not smart and they were very angry dogs ( I never owned a dog). I recently had been curious about getting a dog and being in miliary security enforcement I only knew about the Malinois because I wanted a smart dog. Since I watched you channel I'm addicted and possibly down the road I will be getting doberman. Question!!! If I get another dog will the doberman work well with a companion such as a Malinois dog or what do you suggest?

What I have learnt: cutting the ears and tail is just aesthestics to pay homage to the owner. Tail may be okay coz it is done early coz less pain and all. May not even get ones with tails. However, if I get one with all parts and I'm squeemish and can safely leave all the bits as they are.🤔 Great lesson.

I grew up with Dobies. Both were wonderful, loving, and protective. We never “ordered” them from a breeder, they were both rescues and came with docked tails. I can say for a fact both had a lot of sensitivity in their tails their whole lives. We never cropped their ears as they were adorable with them and felt it was unnecessary. And of course they were neutered/spayed.
