In perfect (no wind or current) conditions, Panope is backed into a slip.
At slow astern speeds, this vessel cannot be steered with rudder alone. Instead, astern "steerage" is accomplished by applying short bursts of AHEAD power against the rudder that is positioned hard-over in the OPPOSITE direction of the desired turn.

For anyone watching who doesn't know, making something that can be quite dicey look that easy takes a high degree of skill! Bravo!

Cool. Not only did you make it look easy, you clearly showed how to do it without a whole lot of talk or explanation. We have a full keel boat too and need to practice this in a marina without a lot of boats. Thanks.

Now let’s see you do that with a 25 kt cross wind. Nice video. Enjoyed the quiet background with the seagulls talking. Very peaceful.

If it was 25 kts from the lefthand side of the screen, I would go straight in (ahead) and let the wind push me onto the (well padded) dock. If it was 25 kts from the righthand side of the screen, I would need a good crew member to quickly get a mid-ships line to a dock cleat . Otherwise, It would be best go to the fuel dock (which can be approached in any wind direction) and wait for the wind to die.

Very nice demonstration. It make sense to keep the rudder opposite as it's the correction forward that you need. Right or left handed prop? Great looking vessel

@@flygoodwinYanmar, standard right handed prop? That mean in reverse prop walk to port. While the rudder is fully to port and the prop walk in reverse also pull to port, the momentum to port is tremendous strong, I think. 1. Can you explain what would happen with this long keel vessel, if you steer to starbord while your are driving stern-to (in reverse)? Is the prop walk (to port) much stronger then the rudder (to starbord)? 2. If the prop walk in reverse (to port) is stronger, what would happen if you go in and out of gear? Thx in advance ah

This was a superb demonstration of controlled boat-handling. I have a long keeled boat and going astern is always thrilling.

I have a single outboard straight power boat, no sail. I do have a full cabin with a lot of sail area. My anxiety comes from returning it onto the trailer with a strong cross current and cross wind. Your conditions looked ideal for docking in this video. Probably for you as in my case those conditions are rare. Good work Captain.

Now you're just showing off! 😁😁 And very nicely done, too. If I remember right, that maneuver is called "Backing snd Filling", Right?

So the helm position was hard to port the entire time at or beyond the slip except at the very end, and the control of turning and position was mostly by fore and aft throttle. Also the throttle movements are relatively large, but brief. Presumably everyone knows, but the way to get good at this is to practice in an open area. Best to do that with any boat, but especially an unfamiliar one (think charter boat).

I use the same technique on my Cape George 38... it can be quite challenging as I'm sure you know! How do you determine exactly when to make the left turn? 100% Feel/judgement? Quite often I mess that part up and have to reinitiate the whole process. I go bow in 95%+ of the time, so I probably should practice backing in more. BTW, Patience my CG 38 is coming up to Port Townsend for some chain plate work. I'll keep an eye open for you so I can thank you in person for all the awesome videos! Tim

I've been driving this boat since 1982 so, I guess I don't really think much about what to do. It just happens automatically, so it seems. By all means, say hello if you run into me when in Port Townsend. If not down at the boat yard, then up at the shop (I work at Cape George). Glad you have enjoyed the videos....

That mainsail is freakishly freaking huge, looks like the spanker off a couple hundred ton full rigged ship.

It is big, but not THAT big. 480 square feet. Boom is 25 feet long. It is the result of converting from Schooner to Sloop by locating the new mast in the old Foremast position. Almost a Cat rig.
