Great vide thanks. We have been using a 16kg Delta for the last 4 years on a 45’ Sun Odyssey. It has been great so far. We have found that regardless of scope, it needs 30m of 10mm chain deployed to get a good initial set. Once you have that you can shorten chain if you feel like you need to. It has held us in a 60-70kts storm for over 2 hours and then in a sustained blow of 30-40 kts for almost 3 days. After that it was buried so deep, the shank being almost a foot below the surface of the sea bed which is predominantly sand as long as you avoid the Posidonia grass. Resetting through 180 turns has been good, normally within 1-1.5 anchor lengths under normal weather shifts.

Thanks for all the effort put into these tests, you’re amazing, literally a full blown research institute. Have you considered testing the Bulwagga? It seems like the perfect candidate for your lineup. Designed by Peter Mele, New York, it received really good reviews and test results but seems to have been discontinued after some years. A European manufacturer has started producing it again, allegedly on popular demand. Alain Poiraud (Spade anchors) wrote favorably about the Bulwagga in his Complete Anchoring Handbook.

So the helm position was hard to port the entire time at or beyond the slip except at the very end, and the control of turning and position was mostly by fore and aft throttle. Also the throttle movements are relatively large, but brief. Presumably everyone knows, but the way to get good at this is to practice in an open area. Best to do that with any boat, but especially an unfamiliar one (think charter boat).

why 180 rotations? why not 50?

My approach is very simple: chain you have in your boat doesn‘t help but chain on the bottom of the sea does. So if space allows I always put out generous 5:1 till 17m depth, that’s what my total 85m chain length supports, from then on I shackle in a 18kg anchor weight after about 40m which keeps the angle on the anchor shank lower and I feel safe till 1:3 till around 27m of depth. The anchor weight in the middle of the chain also provides additional damping due to enlarging the catany of the chain. Have a cat and my bridle contains rubber dampers to further enlarge damping and also less stress on the attachment points of the bridle. The gypsy of my lofrans windlass doesn‘t support rope and there is none available for 10mm DIN chain that would support rope so that’s the best I can do.

@sv panope how much holding power do you estimate the fortress fx85 has?? 5k-10 thousand pounds???
@flygoodwin12 күн бұрын
I really have no idea. Cannot guess. However, the Fortress website claims that holding power for the FX-85 ranges between 3,150 lbs. (Soft Mud) and 21,000 lbs. (Hard Sand).

@flygoodwin thank you I appreciate your time and effort. I have a 60ft float home on pontoons approx 35k pounds. I'm going to anchor it with a 62lb cqr and a 40lb cqr and a 42lb danforth lol I sure hope that's enough to hold here. Either that or I drop 1600$ for a Vulcan anchor thats 73lbs I think that might be my best option

It is big, but not THAT big. 480 square feet. Boom is 25 feet long. It is the result of converting from Schooner to Sloop by locating the new mast in the old Foremast position. Almost a Cat rig.

Good thing this video popped up number 1 for kayak anchors where I'm definitely not using a motor while anchored. Let alone paddling while anchored. If anyone watching is looking for a kayak anchor the mushroom works just fine. Remember your anchoring and not pulling away from the anchor

Hi Steve Question on 20Kg Anchor option, Ive come down to 2 options. This M2 Mantus and the Rocna Vulcan ? Which would you say is the better option form those 2. They are same price point in Galvanised.? Boat is 37 feet Faireline Targa Sport cruiser 8-9 Ton and 11.5m Currently has a bent Danforth Stainless 20+kg but does not hold bottom in changing tides or wind

Hello I have a Danforth stainless steel anchor in the region of 25-30kg. I find it drags and doesn’t hold anywhere near well enough fit new to feel comfortable to sleep near or around other boats. My boat weighs around 9 tons sports cruiser style. I’m in need of a new anchor due to someone bending it so my question of I may is what’s a good anchor for mud sand stones bottom for a plastic boat that gets blown all over the place please?

I kind of wish you'd gone back and repeated all the tests on both anchors when you realized a bit more scope made a huge difference. I don't use minimum scope ever. My minimum is 7 to 1 and I almost always am anchoring in soft mud or soft mud and oyster shells.

I would think that rollbar angle is actually to get it to push out of the bottom when inverted so that it can jump out and reset and not end up in a stable inverted drag. 14:23 you can see it jump way out. Maybe due to short scope but I think that is the main reason after all the roll bar exists specifically to help roll the anchor back over to the tip. So the angle is doing the same thing making it create lift to push out when upside down in the bottom.

Thanks for the in depth review, “no pun intended”. The angled airfoil on the roll bar of the M2 is designed that way so the angle drives the anchor deeper into the sea bed. Agree, very expensive. Thank you for the review.

I have been anchoring with danforth and fortress anchors for 50 years in soft sand and mud . Those types of anchors need to have some cantanery to lift the shank and drive in the flukes down. When your Pulling with all that chain it's infinite scope draging it flat across the bottom. I would try to test again with 6 foot of chain

Tell the truth... Rocna fixed their original anchor BECAUSE you showed them what they screwed up in their design. Great job, and appreciate your humble efforts toward supporting the seabed holding community! The best anchor is 1 to 2 sizes larger than what any vendor table recommends! Rely less on techno-design, chain, scope, etc.. and GET A BIGGER F'N ANCHOR! Love your videos! You're the only KZfaqr I've ever sent $, and well earned!
