In This video, you'll hear from Dr. Jennifer Montague as she explains what Naltrexone is, also known as Vivitrol, and how it can be the thing to help someone stabilize with medication-assisted treatment.
Read the full blog post for medication-assisted treatment👇
www.sandstonecare.com/medicat...
Sandstone Care prescribes two FDA-approved drugs to treat opioid use disorder: buprenorphine (Suboxone and Subutex are common brands) and naltrexone (Vivitrol and Revia are common brands). These treatments have been demonstrated to be safe and effective in combination with counseling and psychosocial support. These medications either reduce the cravings or block the ability of the drug to create the “high” in the person’s brain.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Alcohol Use Disorder
According to the CDC, alcohol use disorder is defined by periods of binge and heavy drinking along with physical dependence on alcohol, cravings, drinking more to achieve the desired effect, and experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you do not consume alcohol.
Drastic changes in academic performance
Loss of interest in previously-enjoyed activities
Decreased personal hygiene
Sudden, inexplicable need for money
Alcohol use in spite of consequences
Smell of alcohol on breath or clothes
Flushed, reddened skin
Slurred or garbled speech
Coordination problems
Changes in sleep pattern
Difficulty concentrating
Mood swings
Use of alcohol to numb extreme emotions
Sandstone Care prescribes two FDA-approved drugs to treat alcohol use disorder: naltrexone (Vivitrol and Revia are common brands) and acamprosate (Campral is a common brand). These treatments have been demonstrated to be safe and effective in combination with counseling and psychosocial support.
Who Might Be a Good Fit for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)?
History of overdose, intentional or unintentional
History of medical complications (infections like septic joints, endocarditis, hepatitis)
History of multiple relapses
Single history of severe/life threatening relapse
Significant cravings
Drug recall euphoria/obsessive thinking
History of high risk behaviors in relapse
Unstable living environment
Continued exposure to use after discharge
Inadequate aftercare plan

I tried viviltrol years ago. Counselors and other providers warned me I had to follow a plan and that vivitrol on its own could not fix my craving for alcohol. Sadly, I relapsed. Getting help is not always easy if you have no health insurance or you're not court ordered. Believe me, I've tried. Another thing is that after covid, providers got used to doing group meetings via Zoom. Even when covid was done and for, they still insisted on doing therapy via line. I kinda miss meeting folks face to face

I can’t have caffeine because I have dangerously high blood pressure by genetics. But I love coffee. So I drink it black. I’ve used naltrexone before and it helped so much with my alcohol cravings. I even found it reduced my desire for nicotine as well. I’m so glad I have a doctor finally that can help me get on it. Starting it in the morning, I tried it before and it was great! I’m so excited to have it now after 2 years of trying to get it.

Vivitrol has been absolutely instrumental in my recovery from heroin. Just be cautious and aware that many providers of the shot will not provide you with a warning band or similar warning for medical professionals in case of an emergency. It's providers laziness as Vivitrol will provide them to them.

So this works on the mu receptors? Same as naloxone? My question about this is, aren’t their natural endorphins (not sure if that’s the right name for them) that we need to feel happiness which would also be getting blocked? The mu receptors don’t just sit constantly unoccupied right? I would think that blocking the receptors responsible for pleasure would put one into a depressive state. I am not an expert here by any means and would appreciate an answer from someone who is.

If you didn't use The Sinclair Method that would explain the pill not working. TSM is all over KZfaq. The idea is that over a period of months, you will have more and more alcohol-free days with no cravings ... until one day, they are all alcohol-free days, and the cravings are gone and the medication is no longer needed (unless you decide to drink). The brain eventually loses interest in alcohol. This goal is technically called Pharmacological Extinction. Most good doctors will prescribe Naltrexone today (however they may ask you to stay abstinent because they are unaware of this research and method). TSM is done from the privacy of your own home and can be completed in 4-12 months. TSM can also be used along with AA, Smart Recovery or any talk therapy group.
