For the record Pimento has probably been sedated many many many times over his lifetimes being kidnapped and working undercover So he’s probably got a pretty high tolerance for sedatives that’s why he was never drowsy

Thank you! I've never had a doctor explain memory loss this well to me before. I have cerebral focal pathology thanks to repeated traumatic head injury (I'm epileptic with a degenerative neuromuscular disease so I've had dozens of head injuries). I have about a decade of memory loss and I don't recall a doctor ever sitting me down and explaining how and why this happens. This video was very enlightening.

Memento is a great film, would recommend! And the tattoos are a call-back to it, the main character does the same to remember his objectives. Interesting that personalities can change due to head trauma. I remember an old story of a man who had a railroad stake go through his head and he had a personality change and became quite mean because of it. I always wondered if some of it was also emotional distress from surviving an injury that horrific; especially without the understanding we have now about PTSD and such. Also not sure how medically relevant it is but I would love to see you react to an Arrested Development episode! Haha, yes, Andy Sandburg is pretty cute! ;)

I guess now Dory and Memento are on the radar for the future.

I have ADHD and at times it can be pretty bad. I forget what I am doing, forget where I put things. When I have a bad day it can cumulate into several hours just of me looking for things I just had and figuring out what I was doing. I also have trouble with remembering how long ago something was, and no memories of large chunks of my childhood and teenage years. Sometimes I don't know what I did the day before, and I often have to check physically if I have done things; I am in the shower and have to feel my hair because i don't know whether I already washed it, or I try to look at things far away because I don't know whether I took out my contact lenses a few seconds ago. I also believe I have a few false memories from gaps where I have some information and filled in the rest.

I worked my civil service duty in an old folks home, as a janitor. My first job was to bring in a breakfast trolly to the dementia ward. Many of the people kinda seemed like they knew you because they were falling into familiar patterns. And I felt like an authority figure/servant/loved one, because I came in hot and with some hot porridge and bread. I always got a good response from the tenants, even tough I'm sure they don't remember me from the morning before. It was a kinda bittersweet play we did every morning.

I won't lie, I can't stop laughing at your reaction to Pimento on the memories that haunt him. The way you arch your eyebrows and just go "disconcerting", idk why that is so hilarious. Pimento is probably my third favorite character in this show. (1 being rosa and 2 being captain holt, they're both hilarious especially together.)

Wonderful to touch on dementia and alzheimers in this video. Such a difficult and scary condition to have and even to be around. But there is a lot that can be done to make things comfortable for people with it and its so sad when that doesn't happen.

so I have memory loss from years of a mix of psychological medications. I have been on many types since 16 (24 now) and it has affected me much to the point of how my mental health disorders could. antipsychotics are my main cause and if im being honest I am terrified to seek treatment. I dont think that fear of treatment of side effects is talked about enough . I am afraid of hearing the full truth.

Memento is a great movie if you haven't watched, and does cover a particular case(or maybe 2) of permanent short term memory loss.

I know I don’t know, but I imagine you’re such a good doctor based on how you explain concepts in videos. Like if you explain to a patient what their diagnosis is, what potential treatments are, and how and why those treatments work like you do here then damn! Maybe I have bad luck, but I’ve met a lot of doctors in a lot of specialties that can’t do this.

My mother has fibromyalgia and her doctor prescribed her Pregabalin. Within 6 months that she was taking it, I start noticing memory loss, especially short-term. It become really bad, with her asking the same question 3 times in a row and not even remembering that she did! My grandmother had Alzheimer and I thought my mother was developing it as well. I start talking to the family and we made an appointment with her doctor. My mom is very aware of her medical needs because of the fibromyalgia and she decided to go off Pregabalin. We talked to the doctor and she gave the ok. Within 1 a month, her memory was completely back. Even my mom notice when she got back to normal. So there is a medication that provokes memory loss. Not as Pimento’s, but still…

I’ve heard stories of dealing with people sun downing in the hospital by giving them a bunch of wash rags and telling them “here’s some laundry that needs folding” and they’ll just start folding them because it’s a familiar task and keeps them calm. That way we don’t have to sedate them when they become agitated

The head trauma thing reminded me of my friend who now has permanent vertigo because he was hit on the head by a steel DVD player. Brains are weird man...

I have seen this kind of memory creation that sounds very much like confabulation with my mother. When she was a teen, she was involved in a major car accident (made the mistake of crossing the street behind a bus) that caused a massive head trauma. Her memories were wiped due to the massive head trauma and she got permanent brain damage that include considerable memroy issues, especially in her long term memories. It is quite interesting how she fills gaps of her memories in with what she heard from others.

This was a fantastic episode and a lot of your talking about the facts and science behind it made me wanna suggest an Episode of Castle. Season 2 Episode 11 "The Fifth Bullet" is about a person with memory loss, dealing with it and figuring out who he is.

I know my mum used to work with someone who didn't have short term memory, possibly after a brain injury. She had to write everything down, to even remember her life, like the fact that she was living with her boyfriend. The fact that she managed to live that well with those symptoms is something I find truly impressive.

As someone that's had some "interesting brain stuff" happen over the last year and a half (subarachnoid haemorrhage from a ruptured AVM and subsequent surgery to remove the AVM) I found this SUPER interesting. I have family history of Alzheimher's and that fight or flight response that you explained was quite an eye opener. Thank you for making this video And yes, Andy Samberg is a total snacc!

I was put on Sodium valproate at one time. It caused me to have a lot of side effects. Double vision, narcolepsy, and memory loss. I was on it for 4 days and I forgot an entire week starting with when I started to take it. I only have a few memories of that week.

You really did cover a lot of interesting things. I've always been fascinated by memory. .. Anyway, I totally recommend the movie Memento - I remember it being really good! (Remember, ha, get it? Ok, I'll see myself out.)

Watching these reactions I was reminded of a tv show that could be interesting to see. It's called "Perception", with Eric McCormack as Dr. Daniel Pierce, a neuropsychiatrist who suffers schizophrenia, that ends up helping the FBI with cases (involving mental illness, brain damage related sickness, among others).

I've taken a couple of psych classes in school, but my major is computer science. I know exactly how computers store information, and I have an abstract, conceptual level of how the brain stores memory, but how exactly does the brain store a single memory. Like, is there a specific neuron somewhere that fires every single time I want to remember that the sky is blue? Is it a pattern of neurons firing in a specific sequence with a specific timing that tells me the sky is blue? How does my brain remember what the color of the sky is???

The Memento joke sounded like a writers' room thing! - And then we could give him amnesia, like in the movie Memento. - What movie?? Oh, like Finding Dory! - NO!

Memory is very interesting. Every night you dream so much and seconds after you wake your brain just goes, oh yeah that was random garbage just going to delete all that. also what people remember says a lot about them. Everyday we see so much that we forget, as you know, not really anything needed to remember, and have trouble keeping track of every thing you need to do in your day to day, but still remember -or very possibly misremember- the colour of the letter box of a random house you walked past going to high school. Like I dunno, memories weird. personally I think we should ban it for the common good!!!

My 94yo grandpa suffers from dementia. He doesn't recognise anyone, is violent, and almost impossible to manage. But for some reason, my dad is able to calm him immediately, although we know he doesn't know exactly who he is

I had a reaction to a new cholesterol med one time. Not only did it cause extreme irritability but I began to imagine I had done things I never did. I'm talking everyday tasks like take out the trash. I would swear I had taken the trash out and an hour later I'd look over and it would still be in the kitchen. Things like that. Quite unsettling.

There are some non psychotropics that can cause retrograde memory loss. I had a bad case of meningioencephilitis and the treatment cocktail they gave me caused some retrograde memory loss. There was no particular typ of memory, it was random. I lost some semantic memories like names of people I knew well or places I frequented but I also lost some episodic memories.

So I had 25 sessions of ECT(bi-temporal the most damaging to memory) and my memory got really messed up. The doctors said I had an atypical response because of how severe my memory problems were. For months I didn't know what was happening because I could only remember a bit. Now.. I lost about 5 years of memory and some more in other places. It feels like I also can't make new memories as well as before the ECT. I'm not against ECT and would still do it the same, because my bipolar is so bad there wasn't much else.
