Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies went down with a painful looking ankle injury against the Brooklyn Nets. He couldn't put any weight on the leg and left the court in a wheelchair. In this video we'll review the injury footage and mechanism, plus talk about the important anatomy and if Ja Morant's aggressive playing style had anything to do with this nasty injury.

Ja Morant will get through this injury just fine. The bigger question is how Ja and the Grizzlies medical staff will make sure this doesn't lead him down a path of recurrent ankle sprains that can really plague your career.

I feel Ja's pain...every time I've sprained my ankle in basketball, it's been my left ankle, and almost always after trying to block a shot. I was third in the league in blocks last season, but I had to adjust my timing and anticipation a bit to prevent injuries like this. I don't want to change my play style too much, as blocks are a big part of my game (same with rebounds), but at the same time I want to avoid injuries, so it's a tough call, lol. Great video, doc!

Dr. Brian you gotta do an analysis on Spencer Dinwiddie’s injury too! I have so many questions like is a partially torn ACL as severe? is the recovery as intensive? How bad would that feel vs a fully torn one? Can a partial tear happen to another major ligament like the achilles and be less intensive in terms of treatment than a full tear? “THANK YOU” for always providing your insight to help us understand our bodies as athletes!

Ja is one of my favorite players to watch even they aren't one of the teams to be considered to get to the playoffs.. A young team going through the ups and down hoping they can turn into a Denver like team and start winning in a couple more years. Kinda scary the way he plays full speed ahead on both ends of the floor, he's gotta learn to pace himself.. This video explanation was a sigh of relief.. Phew... i was skateboarding almost a year ago and broke my ankle by landing on the ground from high up just like this. it swelled up so much for weeks and initially was thinking (and hoping) it was only sprained but the X-rays showed i fractured my fibula right at the ankle. i couldn't walk on it for over a month which felt like forever and i still skate but not nearly as good as i was because my range of motion isn't all there but also really messes with me psychologically a lot. i really hope Morant recovers from this as soon as possible and can keep playing great.

I had literally the exact same injury about a little over a year ago. Felt like an explosion in my ankle, a friend from 10 feet away could hear it pop. Spent about 10 minutes on the ground with the pain shakes (was honestly more pain than when I broke my tibia). Took about two days before I could put really any substantial weight on it without it being excruciating and 6 weeks before I started running and jumping again. All in all I still get residual pain here and there over a year later... no fun, hope it all goes well. Sprains are no joke.
