Raul Jimenez suffered a skull fracture after a scary head clash this weekend during Wolves premier league game against arsenal after striking heads with David Luiz. Jimenez was taken to the hospital and is recovering after surgery, while Luiz continued on during the match before exiting at the half. In this video we'll talk about head injuries, skull fractures, and my opinion on the state of concussion management in professional football.

Thank you for emphasizing the importance of taking head injuries seriously! I’ve been a Neuro ICU RN for many years, so naturally I see head injuries all of the time. It is IMPERATIVE that all measures are taken to ensure the safety of the player when it comes to head trauma. It really bothers me that so many people don’t realize just how serious head injuries can be. Please, everyone reading this, protect your head. It is quite possibly THE most important part of your body. A broken limb is unfortunate, but it will never compare to the life-altering tragedy of a devastating head injury. I’ve seen lives drastically changed, or end entirely, due to a single hit to the head. Your brain is EVERYTHING; please show it the care, concern, love, and protection it deserves and needs. ❤️❤️❤️

@Moleda1986
@Moleda1986 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZAXN I don’t like it solely due to the excessive hits to the head. I’ve taken care of boxers who suffered severe head injuries. A few of them were declared brain dead from their injury. Some were in a persistent coma. Some now have to live in a nursing home for the rest of their lives. Plus, many boxers suffer from CTE, which is serious. Any head injury, even a simple concussion, is serious because it can lead to a multitude of issues- some acute, some chronic, and often times people don’t even realize those things are the result of the head injury. Things like headaches and trouble concentrating are issues that people generally recognize as “okay, this is probably from the head injury I had.” But things like personality changes, trouble concentrating or a short attention span, trouble remembering things, etc. are also potential issues following a head injury, but people tend to chalk it up to something else. I’ve had wives complain their husbands are suddenly much more aggressive and angry, and they don’t realize it’s an unintentional change due to the head injury, not because their husband has decided to just be a jerk all of the sudden. Boxing puts people at such a high risk for a brain hemorrhage, skull fracture, cerebral edema, etc. It’s like playing Russian roulette with your brain every time you step into the ring. 😔
@Moleda1986
@Moleda1986 3 жыл бұрын
@@alo93533 I was actually trying to find more details on his injury, because so far I’ve only seen info regarding the fractured skull. They haven’t reported any type of intracranial bleed or swelling, so I’m assuming that he didn’t experience either of those- which, if that’s the case, is a really good thing and he’s very lucky. So, if he didn’t suffer a bleed or any other type of cerebral damage and he ONLY suffered the skull fracture like I’m assuming, he should recover fine and be able to play again after taking some time off to rest and let his skull heal. 👍🏼🤞🏼
@alo93533

@@Moleda1986 thanks for the detailed response. Of course the players health comes first more than anything and one can only try and guess because they haven’t given much details about the actual injury. I’ve seen he has posted a post on Instagram and he’s doing better and he’s sane under medical supervision. I’ve also recently heard this will not affect his career. It’s only a matter of treating the injury during a certain amount of time roughly about 6 to 8 weeks then after slowly working with him to get back to the pitch without rushing it of course. Thanks for the response again be safe happy holidays and take care 😌

technically he could wear a helmet(I think) but the problem is the helmet wouldn´t protect him from heading the ball. Cech is a keeper so he didn´t have that problem. There was another player, can´t remember the name right now, that broke is skull and was advised to stop playing because if he continued to do headers andrepeated head impacts, he would probably develop dementia and other brain damage symptoms in his 30s. Hey Brian, in rugby we have a HIA protocol. It is definitely worth a look!
@James-rc6qq

Another place where football could really benefit from rugby. Have head injury assessments (HIA's) and as Brian said, have head injury replacements. I know it is less common in football but still important.

Totally agree, after a concussion a player shouldn’t be kept on the match. Other thing that I noticed is that they took almost 10 min to get Raul out of the field, for me, that’s too much, they should’ve taken him immediately to the hospital.

Great video -- on your next, please speak more also to the delayed symptoms of concussion, not always evident in the first moments of evaluation? As a now retired ("emeritus") national referee who worked professional and intercollegiate matches, I've witnessed the "adrenaline effect" where a player thinks she/he is OK, only to have symptoms onset minutes later. The player is NEVER in the best position to self-evaluate, because it's precisely that organ, the brain, that has been impaired by the impact. The NCAA's early focus on concussion protocol for soccer (and American football) shows a path for FIFA and professional leagues to follow. Remove-substitute-evaluate-return... or not. Baseline neurological and motor skills measurement also helps a team's physicians identify cumulative effects and recovery over time, instead of the imperfect on-field evaluations.

Do a video on the Clint Malarchuk or Richard Zednik hockey injury. These are two of the scariest injuries of all time. The team doctor for the Malarchuk injury was a Vietnam war field medic so he knew exactly what to do thankfully. If the team doctor was on the other side of the ice, he apparently would’ve bled out and died.
