first degree burns occur around 118 degrees F. They're cooking her alive in the clip.

a 5 minute exposure at 120 degrees can cause 3rd degree/full thickness burns. This would have been SO much worse than what they portrayed!

@@carr0760 yeah I'm not a doctor but I have cooked for my entire professional career and people grossly underestimate just how dangerous heat can be.

@@atomiccrouton I just recertified in first aid and CPR a few days ago. (Hence this info was fresh in my mind when I watched this today) Everyone else in the class was doing it for the first time and they were shocked by how severe burns can be in various circumstances.

The hydrotherapy scene was hard to watch. And wild to learn irl the people administering it was thinking it was a compassionate act because there were no other treatments at the time. Love hearing your insights on Ratchet!

The hydro therapy was really terrifying. The more so as it was (in this case at least) uses to "cure" homosexuality. So good that by know the latter is bot seen as an mental disorder any more. I understand a little, that some people might really wanted to help but just didi not know better. Makes me beyond grateful that I live today where medicine in general has improved so much. But still makes me wonder how doctors in the future might judge some treatments that are practiced today... Gets me thinking... and thanks for your view on this

If they actually did this at 35-38 celcius normally that seems pretty nice. I can imagine a normal hot bath could help someone's mental health.

This was fascinating. I knew recently they've been doing more research into the use of psychedelics to treat certain mental health conditions, but I wasn't aware how far it went back. I wonder how hydrotherapy even worked and if it was a placebo effect.

The hydrotherapy part is really creepy. I mean - to cure homosexuality with nearly boiling water? That's crazy! It's enough that my mother used to drag me into the freezing shower to "cool me down" when I got into a meltdown (I am autistic... and nobody bothered to explore this posibility). It's something that doesn't help, it only das harm.

Yes, completely creepy and ridiculous and akin to torture. However, let's be realistic here -- 100 degree water is far from boiling. Water boils at 212 F.

@@pvanukoff water boils at 100° C. Pretty much the entire world uses Celsius outside of the US, and This is a British creator's channel. It was an easy mistake to make. Logical, even.

I know it wasn't the main focus of the video but I was just doing defences of capacity module in my Law Degree and you did a really good job of briefly and succinctly mentioning the law in the UK on this matter for a non Lawyer. Great work. 👍

Thanks for the great reaction video. I was really happy to get the notification flash up on my phone 🔔 Ratched has some very dark themes that are often tricky to watch, but your viewpoints helped lessen the horror with tieing in how proper use of hydrotherapy/LSD could have been of help for some mental health issues in the past. The TV conversion therapy with hot 🔥/freezing🧊 water was grim viewing. 119°F is just over 48°C!

Great video Elliot, it might be worth you checking out the 2008 film Changeling starring Angeline Jolie. It is based on the true story of Christine Collins whose young son went missing and was a victim of the 1928 Wineville chicken coop murders. The police bring back what is supposed to be her son and she knows he is not. The police gaslight her and have committed to a mental asylum against her will, where they show scenes of ECT.

LSD as you mentioned could provide a way into one's subconscious and probably make that person aware of some things and the root of some mental illnesses. I would really like to see some cases where this drug was utilized and had positive effect on certain treatments

I think the 'undertones' of punishment you mentioned regarding hydrotherapy were more overt overtones, to be fair. They were shocking people with electricity while they looked at erotic images as well - seems like a pattern to me.

Dr. Elliot, can you react to Jacob's Ladder (1990, *NOT* the shit remake)? It deals with a lot of mental health themes, including PTSD, guilt, and hallucinations in a very well-wrought way, as well as addressing MK-Ultra/the drugging of Vietnam soldiers with LSD and other hallucinogens (I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but MK-Ultra actually did happen). It's one of my favorite movies and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

The US military did also research LSD as a potential bio weapon during the Vietnam War. The experiments conducted by military researchers included LSD administered to cats.

I once burnt my whole right hand, my wrist and a few inches of my forearm trying to restart my furnace. First degree. That was a really bad idea. Nothing to be done really besides a crap ton of ointment. I was like Peter Stormare in Fargo. "I need unguent." In a week all the dead skin basically sloughed off in flakes kind of the like the outside of puff pastry or phyllo dough after it's baked well.

I have intermittent acute priapism each time I see a tall Asian female, each time I wake up, and at random times. I cannot help it. Combined with my satyriasis, it is rather bad, combine it with macrophallus and it is rather embarrassing as well.

Just gonna say BE CAREFUL with substances like LSD and don’t mix drugs!I accidentally ended up taking 400ug of LSD and 20mg of THC (recall these will have synergistic effects!) and had the WORST trip ever. Like the police and the fire brigade had to come for me. I had a psychotic episode and I cannot unsee and unhear some of the things that occurred during that trip. A year later, I still sometimes find myself questioning my own reality. Be safe guys
