Watched that live and it was horrifying, I was stunned.

The fact that he survived the crash, an explosion and a solid 30+ seconds on fire, is in itself unbelievable. But to see he has no other damage then burns to his hands and possibly wrists, is pushing the limits of possibility. The F1 safety protocols and engineering truly shines bright here.

My whole family was so excited to watch the race. 15 seconds in, this happens. They didn’t show the footage or say if he was okay for like 45 seconds after we saw the crash live. Longest 45 seconds of our life, just sitting there wondering if we had just watched grosjean die. Thank god he is okay, miraculously didn’t even break any bones or suffer a concussion. Shoutout to the FIA for all they do and PRAISE THE HALO

That crash was unbelievable. The minutes until they finally showed replays and we got the message that he is okay were nerve wracking

The crash was 53g's according to the race telemetry! He didn't have any injuries associated with the impact itself, only with the fire.

The Halo: 'You saved his life man! You're the hero!' The monocoque: 'Oh yeah you was there too...'

That was a fatal accident without the fatality.

I’m a huge F1 fan. I was so worried and legitimately thought we lost Grosjean. I watched the crash live, it was a few minutes they waited after the crash to show he was ok, just to be sure. It felt like forever. Thank the Lord he’s alright.

For non-F1 fans , the car was designed to break into 2 separate pieces. It helps absorb impact and energy transfer as a whole away from the driver directly.

Engineer and Doctor, now that's a lot of learning to do. Serious respect from a fellow engineer!

So awesome to see you talking about F1! Unfortunately, several drivers have died this way (car splitting metal guardrail) throughout Formula 1 history. Watching this impact live, I was sure that we lost RoGro. It was horrible, but this was the first true test of the halo, and it passed with flying colors. Big props to the FIA for taking a massive step in driver safety by implementing this life saving device!!

EVERYONE hated the Halo when it was introduced, including some drivers, but it has now saved at least 4 lives already in the few years it's been used.

This is why i started wearing fireproof undies and suits from go karting on. Its hot but will save your skin/life.

To add a little bit more context, the Halo was a direct consequence of Jules Bianchi's accident. This accident was much more horrible because it reminded me of Niki Lauda's crash from decades ago, in addition to the potential for a fatal head injury like in Bianchi's case. I wonder if he burnt his hands while still in the cockpit or while jumping over the guard-rail. Either way, I'm glad he's OK. Edit: @Dr. Sutterer, I saw Romain shaking his hands after jumping over the guard-rail, which is probably because he burnt them. Does adrenaline not numb the pain from burns?

0:41 Dude, I know how important can be remembering the work of a medical team during sports events, but you are wrong in this occasion. Grosjean survived thanks to 3 major factors not related to the first intervention of the medical assistant: 1) The Halo. This is a particular and relatively new safety measure that basically saved him from a certain decapitation on the guard-rail. 2) F1 Pilot Cage. Each Dashboard on a new F1 car is like an impact insulator. This is nothing new, Nascar and Rally cars uses the same concept but in a less "speedy" way with Roll Cages. 3) Pilot body. We often forget that these athletes train their body for high speeds and fast decelerations/accelerations. Their body is in the best shape they can get; Grosjean did not lost consciousness at impact also thanks to his physical training and quick reflexes that help him get out from a dangerous situation. We can't deny the medical team will ensure his recovery process, but in the end Romain Grosjean was saved by the constantly improving F1 Cars techology and safety regulations, and his own will to live. There is also a fourth factor that we allways want to forget: *Luck*.

Halo was invented because Felipe Massa was hit by a spring to the head.. He passed out an crashed into a barrier with 250 kmh

Some other things that helped. F1 recently updated the race suits to protect 20seconds of fire instead of 10secs like the previous suits. The gloves were not updated, and still were rated for 10sec, which can explain why his hands were the only things burned. Someone counted that he was in the fire for 27-28 secs. Also, the HANS device that was such a big deal after Dale Earnhardt died, that also helps protect your head from moving during violent crashes, I'm sure is what helped keep him conscious and able to immediately extract himself.

I've been watching F1 since the 2000 season and only twice have I seen a crash and immediately thought the worst. In 2001 Luciano Burti at the Spa circuit and this crash. Amazing that they both came away with their lives.

The Halo protected his head from being severed from his body, the Head And Neck Support (HANS for short) device kept him from being knocked out unconscious after a 53G impact, the fire-proof clothing kept him from burning alive like Niki Lauda, the survival cell and seatbelts kept him inside the cockpit instead of being flung away

Interesting fact: Grosjean has already announced his retirement from the sport at the end of this season. There are now 2 races left (over the next 2 weeks). Sadly he may never race in F1 again, simply because he was already leaving the sport.

Imma just say it cause it doesn’t seem like you know about it but as far as I know the Drivers have to wear 3 layers of racing suit fabric and 4 layers of fireproof fabric because of how often these F1 cars catch fire (that’s at least what I think it is)

can we just talk about the fact that the crash put him through 53G’s of force?!?! it really is a miracle that he was able to maintain consciousness and stay alert enough to get himself out of the car. there’s also the new suits that f1 introduced that can withstand 20 seconds of fire. in fact, the gloves and boots that the drivers wear are the only parts of the suit not made of this material which can explain the burns to his hands. still a great sight to see him walk away from something that would have taken his life just two years earlier!!

They are second degree burns and he injured his foot or ankle as well

I would like to say that the car split in half because of a specific safety system (first time used) where the cockpit or monocoque is called a safety bubble (something like that) which means the cockpit completely separates from everything especially the engine and fuel tank for fire reasons, and the cockpit just goes away making him survive from the extremely highly protective materials
