Check out my reaction to Bojack Horseman: • DOCTOR REACTS TO BOJAC...
It's a Sin reviews: • DOCTOR REACTS TO IT'S ...
This Doctor REACTS video is my first one looking at Stranger Things. The new season has some fascinating scenes on schizophrenia and asylums that were on the decline in the late 1970's when this was set. This gives us a great chance to consider what schizophrenia is, what asylums were, why we got rid of them, and how this meshed with societies view on the mentaly ill. I also talk about trauma and hopefully there are some useful tips on this for healthcare professionals and doctors out there.

Unfortunately, there are many cases in the United States, especially in the 80s, where minors were interrogated without any adult consent and provided with leading questions and false confessions. So that scene with Eleven, is unfortunately accurate.

This video was really interesting. It must be really difficult trying to treat someone in that kind of setting. I saw pictures of criminal wings of "mental hospitals" while in college. Unfortunately, I can confirm, at least here in the US, many did look like that. In fact, hospitals for the treatment of juvenile offenders often looked like that as well. It's barbaric. Then again, the US system has never really focused on care and reentering society. It's more profitable/easy to send people to prisons or to house them in hospitals indefinitely. Our system is really fucked up.

If you’re a fan of stranger things, I’d love to get your thoughts on Robin’s coming out scene from season 3, especially since the show is set in the 80s when homophobia was still very prevalent, as well as some of the queer coding around Will and whether he really is gay. I was introduced to your channel through your Heartstopper reactions.

you’re so right about things getting worse before they get better-i did emdr therapy for a few months last year, and after about a month all my trauma responses got super strong. it felt like they were responding to my efforts to dismantle them, and i felt super nauseous and dizzy for like a solid two weeks. it was also really hard to think/remember things during that whole period and i also had pretty bad headaches. that phenomenon is WAY more real than i’d like it to be lmao

I used to receive services at Central Louisiana State Hospital (Originally the Hospital for the Insane of Louisiana founded in 1906). Its a cottage style facility that once housed 3,000+ patients and was also used as a tuberculosis hospital in the early years. I knew none of this when i started going there. But after entering the grounds and kinda being in awe of the heavy beauty of the place (specifically the Rose Cottage) i told my husband it just FELT different. So i researched it and yes, to make a long story longer, the history of mental health facilities is heartbreaking but sometimes these sites can hold a complex allure to them. As a Schizoaffective person myself i try to view the history of these kinds of places with both fear and respect, because if i have been born when my grandmother was that could have been my fate. In regards to Victor singing Ella Fitzgerald to himself, that is so heartbreaking because i cant help but think if he had not been written off by the hospital staff he might have been able to start dealing with what happened LONG before this.

The mention of Bedlam reminds me of the show Penny Dreadful the first season showed the older harsher outdated modes of treatment on the main character. The 3rd season I think showed a more modern approach to treatments at least from the new psych character they introduced.

Great reaction! And yes, kids: don't toke and drive. Also: Maya Hawke is a talented actress. I wonder if you could react to the movie *Girl, Interrupted.* It has to do with young women with various disorders (BPD, ASPD, OCD, schizophrenia, etc) and is set in a psychiatric hospital in the late 1960s. It stars Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, Brittany Murphy, and Whoopi Goldberg, amongst others.

14:40 I have FND which is a condition very few doctors have a good understanding of. I went to A&E over the summer and it was a fairly quiet day on the ward so the doctor on shift came and sat with me for a while. He told me he did his undergraduate in neuroscience and was autistic he said that he’d developed a fascination with FND over the past year and couldn’t stop reading about it. He gave me some amazing advice he told me how to get doors opened in the NHS because he was realistic about the challenges I would face (this was very shortly after my diagnosis, I was in A&E as I had my first seizure). I was so thankful for his fascination as it really helped me in many ways and it gave me hope after seeing about 10 doctors and medical professionals at that point who made me feel like I was making it all up.

Hey doc! Great video. Whenever I think of ye olde asylums I think of Charenton asylum in France (which was portrayed in that movie about Marquis de Sade starring Geoffrey Rush). I wanted to let you know that at 4:29-4:30 there is a skip in the video where your sentence cuts off (probably a transcoding issue, hopefully not a recording issue). Take care!

Hi! Love your videos as a psych student, I'm here to suggest an idea if you're feeling it! I'd love to see you diagnose the gang from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia with whatever mental illnesses you think they might have (Dennis is the clearest example of this but I think there's a lot to be said about the rest too). I've watched your previous IASIP videos and loved them, I think this would make a cool addition to the collection. I've seen a lot of dissertation on what Dennis suffers from but not much for the others, or at least no consensus, and I'd love to see someone who is actually qualified give their take on the matter. Have a good day!

Can you please react to Casualty? It's hard to recommend a whole mental health storyline as they usually take place over months but there is one episode, series 36 episode 2 (which is still on iPlayer btw), that would be quite good. It's about one guy Jacob who's in an abusive relationship, and another guy Ethan who is dealing with grieving while being a single dad after his fiancee died on their wedding day (for context, the guy he hallucinates is his dead brother, and, although it's not mentioned in the episode it's kind of relevant to understanding his mindset, he's in the early stage of Huntington's disease). Love your reactions!!

Hi Doctor, this video reminds me of something I once read. That asylums in the early 20th century and around that time put a heavy emphasis of esthetic architecture when they were built. The theory being that beautiful buildings promoted better mental health. Would you say there was a grain of truth to that? I love architecture and I've also been to more modern mental health wards. The atmosphere of the two environments were very dissimilar (barring of course the awful treatment mental patients were submitted to back then). I feel like competent treatment in a beautiful environment might be more beneficial to patients with mental illnesses. What do you think?

Hey Dr.Elliot I have some questions so I’ve been to therapists, councilors and even to a psychiatrist. I have a severe habit of picking, I’ve had it since I was 5 and yes I know it’s an anxiety habit but I’ve been to so many ppl and they all can’t stop me I just keep doing it. I’m on an anti anxiety med, anti depressant and nerve pain killer (can’t get off of it due to it helping my fibromyalgia.) What do you suggest for my habit?😅 I also have a history of my father being very abusive and sister has very violent outbursts (she has autism and she functions 2-4. She’s 20 years old). I have also neurological symptoms, I hallucinate but not seeing people, not hearing voices but I see black holes, colored dots that look like electricity but I know it’s not real, and I see what look like black dots and what look like spiders. I also have pins, needles, burning sensation through my body. Is this all just a fibromyalgia thing? One last question, I think I have manic depression. Should I be on an anti depressant if I go into hypomania and have mood swings? What do you suggest for this?😅 Thank you so much!
