I've known about Stan Lee since before the Merry Marvel Marching Society, and I have signed memorabilia all over my house. He has been an inspiration for me, as a writer, and even with all of that, I don't get anywhere near as excited as Jax when I see him. One of the sad things with MCU movies, is that Jack Kirby doesn't get his share of the credit or admiration. Stan and Jack were a team, and I had the pleasure of meeting Jack back in the 70's. For this film, Steve Ditko deserves a lot of credit, that he really doesn't get. He was a strange little man, who didn't like attention, but had some wild creativity that most people would think came in the form of drugs, but he did not partake of them. I remember reading Dr. Strange comics, drawn and conceived by Steve as they were being published, and while he wasn't my favorite character, he challenged my perception of things. Jax, being new to these characters and stories, makes if more fun than it should be to take another look at a great movie. I totally agree with you!

For reference of how strong Strange is in later films, it’s been debated how long he actually spent being killed in looped time when in the dark dimension with Dormammu. The director claims he spent around 10 years in the loop which gave him enough time to really master his abilities, emerging from the dark dimension as truly the most powerful sorcerer on the planet and worthy of filling the position as Sorcerer Supreme
@PhilBagels
@PhilBagels 10 ай бұрын
Which makes sense. From the perspective of "our" dimension, he gained 10 years of intense magical training in an instant. Imagine instantly gaining 10 years training in anything! And that's not like a one-hour piano lesson every week, or even 40 hours a week at a full-time job - it's 24/7 concentration on one thing for a solid ten years! (A side benefit of time being meaningless in the Dark Dimension - and also having the Eye of Agamoto at hand.)

@@PhilBagels Nothing altered his perception of time, he got murdered for 10 years straight. That was the whole point of the bargaining. He brought (looped) time into the Dark dimension to use against Dormammu. It was also kind of the point of his sacrifice, he was willing to spend all eternity getting murdered, as long as it meant that Dormammu was trapped in the loop with him.

When this film first came out in theaters, it was assumed the mention of a Colonel that had suffered a spine injury was a reference to Rhody in Civil War and the fact he broke his back and lost use of his legs. However, in the time since its release, the MCU fans have realized it makes much more sense for Strange to have been training at Kamar-Taj for several years and that the injured Air Force officer was more likely the Hammer test pilot. I found it pretty amazing that going back that far to Iron Man 2 was actually your first thought and that you didn't mention Rhodes at all.

We're told by a reliable in-world source in [a movie Jax hasn't seen yet] that Strange was still practicing medicine in 2012 during the Battle of New York, so his accident didn't happen until sometime after that, which means the phone call he took moments before the accident, which seems to be about a very recent injury, was quite unlikely to be about the Hammer Tech guy, who was injured in 2011. We're also told by the same source, in the same scene, that Strange would be moving into the New York Sanctum "about five years" after the Battle of New York, so in or very close to 2017. So if the phone call was about Rhodey, who was injured in 2016, then Strange's whole journey from the wrecked car to the New York Sanctum -- so most of this movie -- took place over the course of months, not years (not counting the looped time he spent with Dormammu).
@peterkoester7358
@peterkoester7358 10 ай бұрын
@@christinabrock2893 you honestly think he recovered from the accident, at least two surgeries, traveled to Kathmandu, learned the mystic arts (slowly at first, I will add) and became a Master of the NY Sanctum in only a few months?? Even the Ancient One couldn't pull THAT off. Keep in mind, Stephen Strange was already on Hydra's radar in Winter Soldier, taking place in 2014 in the official timeline.
@christinabrock2893
@christinabrock2893 10 ай бұрын
@peterkoester7358 No, I don't, actually. I agree that doesn't make any sense. What I said is that he has to have done that IF the phone call was about Rhodey. Which is why I think the "Air Force colonel with his spine crushed in experimental armor" CAN'T be Rhodey, even though it sounds exactly like him (unless of course it's a timeline error, which I'm not ruling out entirely). Project Insight was about predicting people's future potential abilities to become threats, not (primarily) dealing with current threats. He could have been on their radar simply because he was a genius. But in fact I do think he could have been in the midst of this movie in 2014. The only hard-and-fast dates we have are that he was practicing medicine in 2012, and he took over the NY Sanctum about five years later. 2014 is between those dates. He could have been anywhere from still a surgeon to deep in study at Kamar Taj.

In general, the release order of MCU movies roughly matches their chronological fit in the timeline (except when they're flashback stories taking place in a different era, which is usually made clear). So Thor: The Dark Wolrd takes place after the Avengers, Ant-Man takes place after Age of Ultron, and Dr Strange takes place after Civil War. Sometimes they're bunched very close together- even simultaneous. For example back in Phase 1, the events of The Incredible Hulk.Iron Man 2 and Thor all take place during the same week.

Dr. Strange has always held a special place in my heart (it was a Strange story I was assigned in my unsuccessful try-out as an artist for Marvel waaaay back in 1981) so I was nervous about the movie when I first saw it in the theater. I wasn't disappointed, and I'm glad you liked it as much as I do. I love watching you trying to work through the continuity of the MCU. If it helps, I know the old comics inside out and even I struggle with it sometimes. I wouldn't normally suggest checking out the source material--the movies change so much, usually for good reason--but they do such an excellent job of bringing the art of Dr. S co-creator Steve Ditko to life, you might want to check your library for a collection of the early stories. Also, is it weird that I spent half the video wondering what books are on your shelves behind you?

Just a Correction: the air force pilot with a metal suit that has a spinal injury that they mentioned before the car crash happen, was not the test pilot in iron man 2. That was actually Rhodey (war machine) they were talking about, remember what happened to him during Captain America Civil? ( the movie before this) Also, I really love that you also mention tony stark, Tony and Stephen are actually really good friends in the Comics, and I love that they are similar but also both different from each other. Both Started Out Self-Obsessed and both are blinded by their success. In the beginning, Tony just keep on making great inventions but didn't care about who and what his inventions/weapons were being used for (used for making wars and killing innocent people). Dr. Strange on the other hand, is indeed a really brilliant doctor but he cared about his success and career too much that he didn't have any respect and appreciation towards others, even the ones who cared for him (Christine for example) he even considers himself to be the best Neurosurgeon, the way he always corrects people whenever they call "Mr. Strange" instead of "Dr. Strange" shows great pride and doesn't have humility, therefore he places himself above and look down on others. I really love that both characters developed and now both use their skills both the ones they have and the ones they learn to protect the world. Tony uses technology while Stephen still is a doctor but is also a wizard and uses magic and the mystical arts when it comes to saving and protecting the world.

Just a Correction: We never got any kind of confirmation about who, exactly, the air force pilot with a metal suit with a spinal injury was. Most fans have assumed it was Rhodey, but we really don't know that. It could be the test pilot in iron man 2, or some other similar guy. We don't know. Rhodey was just the assumption because there aren't exactly a lot of air force pilots with metal suits that suffer spinal injuries. Given how famous Rhodey is as the War Machine, if it were him, it's more than likely he would have been mentioned by name. Dr Strange certainly would have been more likely to operate on a celebrity than some random air force guy, and they likely would have tried selling it to him like that. And given that it's clearly not an emergency situation where he has to go 'right now!' (they're discussing options on the phone) the injury doesn't necessarily have to have been something that happened super recently. So it's actually very reasonable to believe it's someone else.

Great reaction as always Jax! You are a delight. And Lamby too! I always believed, and still do, that with the interconnectedness of stories, that the Air Force Colonel that Strange rejects as a patient was Rhodey after the battle of Germany in Civil War and Vision accidentally shooting him down. Since the majority of MCU movies are a straight-line timeline (excluding flashbacks), then this movie comes immediately after the previous. "I feel terrible for him." Jax says while smiling that bright smile. 😀 Mixed messaging? 😛 No, I do understand. The joy at seeing the depth of ideas and the statements they are making in a relatively simple scene is understandable, completely. It's so well done how Benedict Cumberbatch plays his role. He is such a good actor. And as someone who has lost a lot of use of my hands after a serious injury to my wrists, that loss is devastating, even for a non-surgeon. "That is so mean, that is so mean." and still with that blinding smile. 😀 But it was a lesson in humility and understanding, and one he desperately needed. All the people he said no to over the years? He got exactly what he deserved for his indifferent and almost cruel treatment of them. And, again, that depth of storytelling, the comeuppance to the arrogant by telling him exactly what he basically said to unknown others, is smile worthy because it is so well done. "I don't think (Doctor Strange) is going to be a very good team player." Um, have you seen Tony Stark? 😛 If that narcissistic jackwagon can work with a team, Strange can. 😀 Christine deserves a long vacation after that whole saving Stephen's life thing and the defib fight. Or maybe a long alcohol-fueled bender? The first would be best but the second, while a poor choice, would be understandable. Tilda is a great actress at parts like this (and The White Witch from Narnia, where I first saw her), where she can use her inherent inhumanity to make inhuman characters even more unreal and more real too. From what I remember from my youth (Baron) Mordo was pretty much a villain from the get go in the comics, essentially filling the role that Kaecilius was created for in this movie. In the comics I remember Mordo betrayed the Ancient One and was opposed (obviously) to Strange. Which was somewhat distracting when I watched this movie because I knew Mordo was going to be the real villain, and then he wasn't until the end.

You mentioned the great acting in this film, and to my mind it's really one of the greatest strengths of the MCU (and the Disney+ shows that are part of Phase 4). There's at least 48 Oscar nominated actors spread out over the various films and shows (without even counting little cameos that show up in some of the films). And I think there's a solid two dozen who have won Oscars for Best Actor/Actress. The producer of these films have pulled in amazing acting talent and it shows up onscreen.

The spinal injury in an experimental armor was referring to Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes who was injured by Vision during Captain America: Civil War. 😢 The Ancient One sent Strange on a "Magical Mystery Tour" through the cosmos and various dimensions including the Dark Dimension - home to the Dread Dormammu. 😮 The Ancient One knows about all of the Infinity Stones, she has been around a long time. So far in order... The Tesseract (Space Stone) - Blue The Ether (Reality Stone) - Red The Orb (Power Stone) - Purple The Eye of Agamotto (Time Stone) - Green. 😅 Dormammu desires Earth because it is the Nexus point of reality. If he controls Earth he controls the hub, which is the perfect jumping off point to anywhere in the multiverse. All other parallel universes radiate out from Earth-616 a.k.a. mainline continuity Marvel universe. 😊 The Bleeker Street address is the New York Sanctum which in the comics is Doctor Strange's main abode. It is located near Greenwich Village. 😊 The Celestials were the beings the Collector showed to the Guardians. The Celestials are ancient beings who seeded the Universe with life. You will learn more about them in The Eternals movie. 😊

Fun meta stuff: Both Robert Downey jr and Benedict Cumberbatch have played popular versions of Sherlock Holmes. Downey's sidekick Dr. Watson was Jude Law (whom will eventually appear in the MCU), and Cumberbatch's Watson is Martin Freeman (also in multiple MCU movies). I'm almost tempted to suggest you find time to view both series (one a film series, the other a BBC TV series with just 12 90-minute episodes). Both innovative takes on the iconic detective.

20:11 Oh, Thanos _wishes_ he was the biggest, baddest thing in the universe... 40:10 Doctor Strange working with the Avengers? Hmmm... Doctor Strange is my favorite MCU hero, mainly because I have a lot of similarities with him. I'm a voracious reader, driven to succeed, stand out from my peers, and always seek knowledge. But very much like him, I had to learn some tough lessons the hard way. Also, as someone who studies science, the possibilities of there being multiple layers to reality is always fascinating. Science - and our understanding of reality in general - is based on human perception. But there are limits to it, and it's entirely possible that what we're seeing isn't real. I know that time isn't linear, but I can't prove it. Maybe science will catch up someday. Anyway, the movie itself works fine as an origin story, but it gets overshadowed by the others. That's really a testament to the quality of Phase 3, and the momentum will just keep building from here. You'll see soon enough...

Old-guy comic buff from the '60s here, hoping to add one more layer: Back in the transition days at Marvel from horror and sci-fi to superheroes in the 1960s, specific titles helped the transition, whether by keeping some heroes' story arcs alive if they didn't have their own title, or to extend existing popular heroes' exposure by doing half-stories. The big ones were Astonishing Tales, usually featuring a Hulk half-story, and a Thor or Tales of Asgard half-story --- Tales to Astonish (easter-egged in Ant-Man) featuring Hulk for half and Ant-Man/Giant-Man & the Wasp for half (probably the first inspiration for these heroes to be founding Avengers)--- and Tales of Suspense, featuring half Iron Man, half Cap (also part of his retcon from being alive while simultaneously frozen in the '40s). Occasionally a team-up might occur between the primary heroes of these binary books, creating a full-length duo story. Although never referenced, hinted at, or easter-egged, I think Tales of Suspense is one of the binding themes of the MCU --- the complex relationship between Steve and Tony. Tales to Astonish got its love letter in Ant-Man, easter-egged heavily with the storied couple of Hank and Janet Pym, who were the first and founding Avengers. Plus Yellowjacket, one of Pym's coolest incarnations. Moreover, it allowed Hank to 'shake out the bugs' as he transitioned from his initial identity as basically nerd-shrinking guy with ants to 60-foot superhero powerhouse --- without a lot of expensive re-tooling of a solo mag. Stan was very shrewd in that regard. Astonishing Tales --- well ---- this is where I bite my lip and wait for your next reaction. Journey Into Mystery is worth an honorable mention, as it was largely Thor and Asgard, and the popularity of Thor was such that he also got additional page time with Hulk in Astonishing Tales. Side note: Peter Parker is also in this club, getting his start in Amazing Fantasy, before his own title. With the way the old comic distribution worked --- weekly to the racks everywhere like newspapers and magazines ---- Stan had arranged these disparate heroes and titles into compelling interweaving story threads, albeit somewhat simply, even crudely, that you never went more than two weeks out of the month getting your fix of your favorites for twelve cents per title. What emerged was The Avengers, and a concept --- heroes had personal lives, solo hero lives, and team lives. The MCU, thank the producers, UNDERSTOOD that this made magic in the epic stories, because you were invested in each member on levels. The unifying theme of these stories were often detailed in the comics with little footnotes to where a reference might be expanded in another comic series --- all signed or initialed by Stan -- we got a cameo in every story, at least a whisper or nod, from The Man. Any woman who has as much unfeigned joy at spotting old man Stan in a cameo will never be short of marriage options. Keep up the fun as long as it's fun for you. We'll be fine.

16:14 The Sorcerer Supreme in the comics was an old Asian man. There was a bit of controversy over Marvel “whitewashing” this role, and I’m torn between loyalty to the source material and geeking out over *Tilda Swinton* . 26:40 No, the one in that scene was the purple Power stone. Although all of the stones are dangerous, I think the Power stone is the deadliest to simply touch. The whole reason Peter Quill had to grab the stone when Rocket blew it out of Ronan’s hammer-thing is that even letting it touch the ground would’ve started a chain reaction that would’ve destroyed Xandar.

@@johnniequinn3215 the MCU is absolutely a different universe with different history & lore from the mainstream comics. It's technically Earth-19999, and was designated such in Marvel's own handbook published in 2008. However for the sake of simplicity, when these movies starting getting into the multiverse with characters exploring and traveling between different universes, Kevin Feige decided they wouldn't use that term onscreen. So the actors in MCU movies refer to primary or main universe (where the events of all Phase 1-2 movies take place) as Earth 616. So 616 stopped referring exclusively to the comics and became a way of saying "the main or primary universe". However, comic book 616 and movie 616 are very different realities.
