Shoutout to Executive Producer ChurchillsCigar for sponsoring this reaction! We're ready for this new adventure! Trusting our Patrons that this is a show we'll love too! We've never seen any Doctor who episode so this is a brand new venture for us :D Excited to have you all along for the ride! Hi Guys! Sorry that so much was cut. The original edited video for YT was 38 minutes long. It got blocked 6 different times requiring extra cuts before we could post it live. Sorry for the choppiness! Thanks for the continued support though. Note: The discoloration is due to the numbers of times we had to reprocess the video due to the blocks- it deteriorates the quality every time.

On one hand, there's so much I could explain that could give context to some of your questions. Like why the mannequins had guns, why the Tardis sounds the way it does, more info on The Doctor themselves. It's truly amazing when newcomers like you guys know so very little, you get to experience all these amazing, exciting and heartbreaking journeys for the first time. So many twists and turns, reveals that I wish I could experience again for the first time. 58 years of history, and you guys are about the experience a mere fraction of this franchise. You are in for a long but exciting ride. Starting back in 1963 to this day, 13 Doctors and counting, Geronimo.

Regarding the tone "Am I supposed to be scared? Is it supposed to be corny?" Yes. Both of those. It's a family show so, it's meant to be accessible to kids. A lot of creepy, scary stuff, but also it has a cheap, low budget cheesy charm, with the Doctor being a bit silly so the kids watching at home know "well I'm scared of the monsters, but the Doctor's making jokes so I know he'll save the day", that kind of thing.

Doctor Who was a highly acclaimed children's TV show that started in 1963. The TV show ended in the mid 1980's, it became a radio program, and was made into a movie in 1996. What you are watching is the TV reboot from 2005. Christopher Eccleston is playing the ninth Doctor.

When he says “I AM TALKING” this is also a line that will be echoed by future doctors, notably David Tennant in his first episode, but 11 and 12 get in on the action too, it’s a nice callback that helps remind the audience that yes this _is_ the same character, and while they may change there are some idiosyncrasies that remain the same, like the doctor loving the sound of his own voice.

This was a particularly cheesy episode, but the show is sometimes very creepy, very funny, it just intriguing. It’s not always cheesy, but occasionally it is. It gets a lot better, especially IMO with later Doctors, though it’s very worth going for the whole ride. You’ll learn why there are “different” Doctors in time. It really is a great show. 👍

I think this is the worst episode of Ecclestons doctor. the pacing is bad, neither actor are comfortable in their role, then enemy is lame, and you don't really understand the motivations of the characters. A LOT of that is fixed in the next episode. Arguably Ecclestons best. I hear he's doing audio dramas now, which is cool because I always felt like we didn't get enough of his doctor.

The "Nestine" where introduced originally way back with the 3rd Doctor (1960's). So it's not an original story. You'll find out that the Doctor wasn't helpless or stuck. He was testing her. Eccleston's bizarrely-enthused and excited "I'm the Doctor, by the way. Run for your life!" was what hooked me. Someone who is apparently enjoying the potential end of the world is often intriguing. The living plastic having "guns" might have a canonical explanation, but just from a practical standpoint, it's not overly outlandish. A "gun" as a weapon is just a projectile, a propulsive force, and an aiming device. Something that can apparently make plastic do whatever it wants could cover that pretty easily. The point about the guns, and a lot of other stuff, not being explained is fair, but I think it's also somewhat intentional. We're seeing these events almost entirely from Rose's POV. It's baffling to us because it's baffling to her, and humans in general. The idea that humanity is a much smaller part of a far larger and more complex universe than we could possibly imagine is a big part of the series. There's a touch of Lovecraft about it; "here be dragons", and "here", it turns out, is everywhere. Additionally, I think the writers were trying to bait the hook for the series, and giving way more questions than answers was part of the strategy. I don't want to spoil, although the info in question is sorta hard to avoid, but there are a lot of people who feel the series really started to hit its stride in season 2, for reasons that will become clear. I like the first season quite a bit, myself, though it's hampered by a lot of constraints that can be expected to come with rebooting a series that the brass are iffy about. This was a pretty big risk, given the relative importance of Dr Who in British pop culture; an American equivalent might be rebooting M*A*S*H*, or maybe when Star Trek: TNG came out. A lot of audience passion involved, which can be both good and bad. The show had run for 26 years (in a culture where TV series were usually limited to 2 seasons), and been off the air for 15, so it was quite a unique situation. To give an idea of the success achieved, Nu Who is credited with making Saturday night prime-time dramas a profitable venture in the UK again. Again, don't want to spoil, but Rose's relationship with the Doctor will become clearer. It's probably not what you might expect, though, at least not entirely (and you'll be able to recognize early elements of it in the first episode later). They didn't take the easy route. The relationships of past Doctors, if you knew of them, would be a guide, but you don't need to know them (or any of the Old Who lore, though it sometimes gets incorporated as Easter-egg sorta deals) to get Nu Who. The thoughts on tone are well-observed. Old Who was essentially Saturday afternoon/evening family viewing (interestingly, it was originally intended as educational programming about historical events. As a bit of trivia, the first episode aired the day after the JFK assassination). Nu Who was, I think, trying from the beginning to honour that, but up the maturity and sophistication a bit. Old Who was also famously made for pennies, so some cheesiness is both inflicted by the budget and also sorta... tradition? To see if you jibe with the series or not, it might be worth skipping ahead to episode 9, "The Empty Child", and its conclusion, episode 10, "The Doctor Dances" (Nu Who is much more episodic than Old Who, so viewing order isn't nearly as important in most cases. There are overarching plots, but they're sporadic. The X-Files would be a good comparison; "monster of the week" with occasional larger developments/specific "big plot" episodes). It won a Hugo, and is instantly recognizable to basically anyone who's seen it.
@1funkyflyguy
@1funkyflyguy 2 жыл бұрын
BAD ADVISE! Don't skip ahead to any episodes ever! I was in agreement with everything you said until up to that point. If they are going to watch the series, then watch it in order or just don't bother watching it at all. Every TV series has stronger and weaker episodes, but I think you are just cheating yourself of enjoying the full experience when you skip episodes, if not for that that an episode that one might not enjoy as much another person will hence you maybe missing out a great watch!

The 'hand guns' don't make a lot of sense here unless you know that this is a callback to the first appearance of the living plastic mannequins back in 1970. In that first appearance, the shop dummies had been built by the Nestene and distributed over a period of time rather than taking control of existing plastic.

This particular episode was a reintroduction to Doctor Who after it was 'cancelled' in 1989. There was an attempt in 1996 to bring it back with a television movie made in the US. Finally in 2005 they succeeded. You may recall that Clive was showing Rose pictures of historical events one of those being the assassination of JFK. That has significance for the original launch. Kennedys assassination happened the day before the first episode 'An Unearthly Child ' was transmitted. This episode and this season was designed to break new viewers in to the mythos of the show. The biggest cringe moment in this episode will always be Mickey being eaten by the bin (trash can). Doctor Who as a whole can go anywhere and be anything storywise. Alot of new viewers do feel abit strange after this particular episode but please stick with it and avoid the spoilers!

Ok first up its nice to see another Doctor Who reaction and welcome to the show. It's hard to explain without spoilers so I'll explain without spoilers as best I can. The beauty of Doctor Who is the cheesiness and it can be all those things it can be terrifying, funny, sad, corny, political, drama, sci fi there's lots of iconic things you have yet to discover. Doctor Who the 2005 revival alot of people call this a reboot but it's not it's a continuation of the original Doctor Who series that started in 1963 then it was cancelled in 1989 due to political reasons then it had another attempt to bring the show back in the USA in 1996 with a one off TV Movie but failed then it was finally revived in 2005 onwards. When The Doctor looks in the mirror this indicates that this is the first time he's seen his new face I won't explain how that works but the actor in this Christopher Eccleston is the ninth actor to play The Doctor. Doctor Who means who is he because no one's knows his name? Hes just simply referred to as The Doctor. The scene where they explain The Doctor being present at the assasination of John F. Kennedy is a reference because the very first episode of Doctor Who aired on the same night Kennedy was announced to be killed. The people The Doctor picks up are usually referred to as companions or assistants.

The show effects being cheesy pertains to its origins from the '60s. Because their budget was pitifully low, they had a really '60s scifi, rubber-suit-monsters and cheap-sets-and-production-values look to.. everything. But the writing was frequently extremely innovative and high-concept. So the cheesiness and low-budget looking visuals grew to become an endearing quality to its fans, and in a lot of ways, many of the Doctor's most famous alien designs have retained the core design elements from all those roots, even when they've since updated those monster designs to make them more modern. But, yes, if you guys decide to continue with the show, you can expect visuals that will reflect that cheesiness, and more from it's nearing 60-year-long history than even just from 2005. It's one of the longest-running scifi works in the genre, at least for tv, having been on more years than probably Star Trek.

You're right to query the tone, as it's the main stumbling block of the first half of this season. Bringing a show back after 15 years, to a completely new generation of viewers, the production team really didn't know what tone to strike, so you get a number of misfires in the early episodes. There was really no precedent for what they were doing. In the 1960s and 1970s, Doctor Who had been mainstream family Saturday evening viewing, but had gradually slipped further and further down the ratings and out of public consciousness. By the 2005 revival, many journalists were apparently unaware that it in its heyday it had been a successful mainstream show watched by all the family, resulting in headlines along the lines of "Doctor Who is coming back - and this time it's not just for nerds". Showrunner Russell T Davies was absolutely determined that the show should re-emerge on BBC1 at prime time on a Saturday, just as it had in its heyday, and not be shunted off to some late-night "cult" corner of BBC2 or BBC4. He wanted it to be a big, confident ratings smash that would appeal to huge audiences ... while still being uniquely, eccentrically, idiosyncratically Doctor Who - which is a hell of a difficult feat, so it's hardly surprising that he and his team had a few hiccups in establishing the right tone for it. By the end of the season - and you'll see the difference - the production team has figured out through trial-and-error how to make a 21st Century mass-market version of Doctor Who that works. There's still plenty of silliness, but it's the silliness of a show that's witty, self-aware and confident of its identity. Do persevere with the show. Because there's one thing that's as true of the 2005-onwards revived version as it was of the original 1963-1989 series: you'll watch Doctor Who one week and it'll be shit. And you'll think to yourself, "Why am I wasting my time with this godawful show?" Then the very next week they'll broadcast an episode that you will literally remember for the rest of your life, and still be babbling excitedly about 40 years later. That has happened so often that it's just an inescapable fact of Doctor Who. The lows are bad. Terrible. But the highs are almost unbelievable. You'll see what I mean when you get to them.

Definitely stick with it, it's a wild ride and good journey. Some CG and practical effects have aged better than others (this season being 17 years old, after all), and you will note jumps in quality (advancing CG tech especially), writing, and budget as you go. There are a few, ahem, stinkers, this season where a certain kind of comedy pops up for like two episodes (never to go that over the top again that way, best I recall. And having checked Patreon, you are already beyond those). The show runner at the time was also still finding his footing in terms of tone, what worked and what didn't. The living shop dummies are a classic baddie first seen in the 1970s. And looks like you're up to at least episode 6, Dalek (again per Patreon), which is another classic baddie. This version of the theme is a remix of the original one, and not the first remix either. Things like the exterior design of the Doctor's ship as a police phone box and the sound it makes are also holdovers, now iconic, from the original series. So, while there are classic things and twists on them that show up, new things do get created too.

The newest series is much more episodic the older series had some stories that span the entire season where 50% of the episode took place within a certain building. They would commonly have storylines that would last for four episodes all the way up to 8 episodes I think. The newer Series has a few 2 episode storylines and maybe some storylines that go longer but I don't think anything goes longer than four episodes in the modern storyline other than overarching patterns that maybe a story of themself or may just be a pattern throughout the season

I really hope 13 and Y go to Big Finish sooner rather than later. I'd love some stories that are more to my taste writing-wise.

No. Not Doctor Who. It has everything, comedy, action, adventure and sadness. Not forgetting Past Present and Future Time.

The effects with Who were always bad, even for their time in the original run. They do get better, the first new season was made on the cheap and the hope it would get an audience (the previous attempt, a TV move in the mid 90s flopped despite casting one of the best Doctors). The first season of New Who has a lot more of the "cheese" factor, outside of the budget and effects. It was brought back aimed at children, as the original series was made in 1963, and some of the comedy shows the target age group. The tone can change by the story, a few are more gothic-horror, some more light, some deep sci-fi, some period pieces with a sci-fi element, and some really quite bad (season two has a couple of those). How the title actor changes is integrated into the story, you will get to it eventually. Along with the TARDIS itself, a budget saving device; it is one of the great sci-fi tropes invented out of necessity. Saying anything more would be way too much of a "spolier". There are a few nods to "classic" Who throughout, but nothing important to the story that requires you to know anything of the original run - more just fan service. And, no, it is not the same villain every story, or even necessarily any villain.

The early seasons. Particularly the first one can be really hard to get through in a first time. It's meant to be a family show and the earlier seasons lean into that alot hence some ridiculousness and just bizarre stuff you'll see and be like "why are we watching this?" I almost gave the show up after about 4 or 5 episodes. But my friend insisted I stick to it and now even with all things considered it's one of my favorite shows of all time.

You guys skipped ALL the good parts, I wanted to see you react to the doctor & rise talking and to the TARDIS when rise first went in

Every episode has a different writer so the tone, by design, varies. Some episodes are cheesy/campy comedies adventures, some are scary, some are mystery’s, some are tear-jerkers. I will however say that episode #2 is particularly “Barmy”

I don't want to spoil too much but it's not every single season that the doctor changes faces. I will say in Old Who (classic Doctor Who) the first doctor was the doctor for several seasons and it was only at the end of his run when the show was so popular and they wanted the show to continue that they added in a method for changing the doctor's face.

The first season has a lot of cheesy moments. Once they get a bigger budget and find their place season by season 2 it’s amazing

OK I know you guys are reacting to Dr. Who now but I’m gonna attempt this Hail Mary Pass anyway 😉; please consider reacting to The Reimagined Battlestar Galactica (think Star Wars for adults, or Game of Thrones but in space). I was gonna paste a link but sometimes KZfaq deletes those so please type “BattlesStar Galactica | Roslin Makes Baltar Confront His Betrayal” And let me know what you think. Thanks

Unfortunately a lot of teasing us is baked into the history of the show and simply because they want it to be in the same universe. Do they have to put something in that silly to pay homage to the series that birth this series or feel like being silly is a part of the show so create new silly things that mess with the silliness of the already-established universe. Sorry if it's confusing doing my best to not spoil anything

This is one of the worst eps of modern who. Partly because it's so early 00s and partly because it's seeing up a show that has already had to many eps wo reasonably watch them all yet somehow the more dedicated fans do. (I recently got britbox during the pandemic and watched all of them that are there, well minus some badly recreated eps.)
