"There was a man there" makes perfect sense in the context of British culture. It's something we all know, even as kids (I was 13 when this episode first aired), that some evacuees were treated badly by the families who took them in. A lot were used as slave labour or starved or physically abused. So, there were kids who were sent to the countryside for their safety who ran away back to the cities being bombed because they felt safer there.
@mintygrey
@mintygrey Жыл бұрын
I'd never considered that American kids probably don't have to learn as much about the intense cultural impact of WWII as British kids do! I think Eric did pick up on it, but in a sense of "he can't have meant the bad thing...", where we're here to point out "yeah, he probably meant the bad thing."
@gameover9390
@gameover9390 Жыл бұрын
@@mintygrey I never knew about this, I thought children were just sent to their grandparents. I guess it sad and kinda ironic that most of what I knew about children being sent off to the countryside was from a show called horrible histories, but yet it never told me about the horrors of this(if you wondering what it told me: It was that apparently most children at time, had never heard of or saw cows and other livestock animals before. So they had very bad reactions). I do wonder if anyone was evacuated or moved in Australian when Japan was trying to invade.
@babybear9443

My grandad was one of them. He was sent from London to Wales. The stories he would tell were horrific. He was split from his older sister and two younger brothers. He was made to work without much food or rest and would be beaten for the smallest thing. He befriended a group of boys, who would all go out and try to find food. One story will live with me forever. They were climbing down the cliffs to reach a seabird colony (for the eggs) and one boy fell. He was 6 years old. The evacuations saved lifes, but there was definitely a down side, and it was just your luck where you ended up.

This two-parter is still one of my favorite Doctor Who episodes ever. I remember first time I watched it - I was absolutely terrified of it. I still am, tbh. Glad you guys enjoyed it! Especially Eric's reaction to John Barrowman showing up was amazing (though I do wonder if you missed his butt-slap because you were all watching Eric. xD). I liked where the conversation was going in the end there, talking about Mickey and Rose and such. I think there's some legitimate points on both sides, but yeah, at this point I'm personally like "Rose, you should probably... break up with Mickey. Just so that there's some closure.". And LONO! I loved the editing for this one! It can't have been easy, with such a cramped episode, but I thought it worked really well! And all the small zoom-ins and such were hilarious. And while it's a change, I thought the footage cutting in and out worked very well for this one. :) I always have a hard time talking about the first half of two-parters, so I'll leave off with saying that I'm looking forward to next week a lot.

+MrGustyGamer _"true, but season 8 was a travesty."_ Really? I thought _Deep Breath_ was generally considered to be very good, and _Listen_ is often regarded as a Masterpiece. As for the finale... I guess it all depends on how much you like M[....]. I love h[..], so I loved those two Episodes as well; but maybe others feel differently.... There are more Episodes in S8, of course, some good and others.... not as good, but those weren't written by Steven Moffat.

I think the writer fell in love with the character (Clara) a bit too much. Or she was the writer's embodiment in the story. A Mary Sue. Or both. I love Moffat's writing normally. Loved his stuff on Sherlock. Loved The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances -- he defined the Doctor for me as the man, er, Time Lord, who did everything so that 'everybody lives' But for the life of me, I couldn't force myself to like Clara. I tried. Just couldn't. I don't think I'll ever stop being cross with them for writing Kate Stewart as if she were dumb just to make Clara look clever. (Suspended airplane scene at UNIT anyone?) A Lethbridge-Stewart deserved better!

I love this episode because of the well done horror and intrigue elements. Also of course the great John Barrowman as Capt. Jack Harkness which is an awesome name by the way. The mask children are truly terrifying and creepy especially how people change into them. I also love how much of a flirt Jack is considering he is very handsome and knows it. I love his interactions with Rose and the information we learn about him. It was also interesting to see the Doctor and Rose separated for most of the episode. I really like how the Doctor shows off more of his intelligence in this episode. I also think the action was much better in this episode than what we have seen before at least on this scale. I loved this reaction and I can't wait for the next one. :-)

Since the moment I saw you guys were doing Doctor Who, THIS is the moment I've been excited for. This 2-parter, and the other gems to come in future seasons, are what make the show totally worth it through some of it's weaker of cheesier moments.

Time Agents were first mentioned in the 1977 serial "Talons of Weng Chiang" know Jack is the first one we've ever met on the show and honestly we don't know what they do really and bar a character from Torchwood s2 we never meet another one

A great two parter that really creeps me out even now. Something about the gas masks is super spooky and nightmare inducing.

FYI, Captain Jack Harkness had his own series "Torchwood" that was fairly good but short-lived.
