I always wondered about why they picked "Schlechter" instead of "Böser". Bad Wolf in fairy tales translates to Böser Wolf and "schlecht" has more a meaning of "of inferior quality" and generally indicates more of a judgment of the quality of something than its moral qualities. It's possible to use schlecht for intentions and things like that but it's rarely used for that.

In the 60's it originally was just a "futuristic screwdriver" that instead of mechanical turning it uses sound waves to do it. Nowadays it is a supercomputer connected to the TARDIS and linked into the doctors neurons through a telepathically field. So you Point and click with it by "point and thinking". Calvin was right. Its used as a Deus ex Machina device now... I really hope that wasn't too Spoiler-y for you guys. Has nothing to do with the story, just how the fictional device works in that universe :)

@zap 4th it kinda makes sense. If it can sonically apply force on a screw in a way that allows it to turn it, why can't it apply force on other objects? Though I agree that it's kind of a tension killer with how its written into the story.

According to many, he's *still* an excellent writer for _Doctor Who_ when he *is* in charge of the whole thing. Those that don't like him just happen to be louder. I know it's hard to remember as it's been 8 years at this point, but the same was true during RTD's Era. Which is also why I suspect there will be cries for Moffat to return around the latter half, possibly latter third, of Series 12. That's just how these things go. Same as with the National Football (Soccer) Team of whatever country one happens to be from _[unless it's the U.S., of course... the U.S. doesn't care about soccer]_.

Moffat's a really good writer. The problem is he's got a tendency to skip ahead in character development for the sake of plot, and an obsession with finding loopholes for death that gets a bit repetitive in the long run. Most of his episodes are really good on their own, and his season plot arcs are very well crafted, and his emotional climaxes are often strong, it's just that some of the character setup suffers a bit and there's some diminishing returns on the impact of his death loophole twists over time. Davies is better at gradual character development, but generally weaker on plot, concepts and logical setup. I enjoy both for their different strengths. I kind of wonder what would have happened if they had co-ran the show. In a sense, I think Moffat's approach to storytelling would be perfect for movies, since that's all about telling a tight and efficient story that's on theme and then getting out when you've made your point. If you're doing television, it helps to go to the next point instead of staying on the same point after you've made it, and I think that's part of why some people grew tired of Moffat as a showrunner. I didn't, personally, but I can see where they're coming from. He definitely has shortcomings. Davies does too, just different ones.

This episode (or well, the entire two-parter) is still in my top 10 DW episodes of all time, because of the impact it had in me when I first watched it. It's creepy and suspenseful, but it's also SO MUCH FUN, and it leaves you with a huge grin on your face. I love Jack, Rose and the Doctor together. And the ending to it I feel is perfect, it's just so happy. It's really when I went from liking Doctor Who to LOVING Doctor Who. And it's stuck with me since. "Everybody lives!" I think that's an important message to take away from Doctor Who, or that the show tries to give you. There's death and sadness and tragedy, and that all happens, but sometimes things work out and everybody lives and it just let's you be happy. Doesn't have to be doom and gloom all the time. It can be, and it often is, but we can get through that as long as there are days like this in-between. :) (There, that's enough of sweetness and cheese for today!) Glad you guys really enjoyed it! I agree, this is one of the most well written episodes we've seen this far (not that the others have been bad, at all). It's just so neatly put together. I had a feeling you'd really enjoy this. And now you get Jack on the Tardis! Hurrah! A very much younger John Barrowman than Eric is used to. :P Gonna be fun to see this going forward.

If I were to do it today I probably wouldn’t do that but even if I did it would probably still end up on the top 10 because I have dramatically softened in my opinion on Hell Bent. (I loved it when I first watched it, but allowed online discourse to sway my opinion on it - while I can acknowledge its flaws now, I don’t think they’re as damaging to the episode as they’re said to be.) Also World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls is my favourite modern story now.

Richard Wilson plays Dr Constantine who is an actor who is much beloved in Britain for his role in the genius sitcom One Foot in the Grave (the equally wonderful Annette Crosby who played his wife appears in a series 5 episode too). The comic scene with the woman whose leg grew back was probably intended to take advantage of his presence. The 2nd Doctor was the first one to use the sonic screwdriver on screen back in 1968.

When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it'll never end. But however hard you try you can't run forever. Everybody knows that everybody dies and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think that all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark if he ever for one moment, accepts it. Everybody knows that everybody dies. But not every day. Not today. Some days are special. Some days are so, so blessed. Some days, nobody dies at all. Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair, and the Doctor comes to call... everybody lives.

(If we count only on screen appearance) The second doctor whipped it out at some point, but not to save the day, but because he needed a screwdriver. Doctor Constantine was played by Richard Wilson, star of a long running BBC sitcom "One Foot in the Grave" which ran for 6 series and 7 christmas specials from 1990 to 2000. The show was very popular, and Richard's character Victor Meldrew, became synonymous with those people who are always complaining about something. I think the prominence of Constantine's character in the story is down to the respect in which Richard is held at the BBC.

Which is why I don't expect this comment to have much effect at all. That said, I do get why you wrote it; however, I also think that writing it in All-CAPS only exacerbates the likelihood of a "contrary" response by Internet-denizens. So, even though I do get how aggravating those impatient commenters likely are, I think that -- possibly -- your Moderator job would go better if you'd try not to show that aggravation. I understand the frustration with impatient commenters. I really do. Two things though. The first is that you should remember that the impatience and the apparent spamming _[although that's probably more to do with the sheer number of people asking rather than with actual spamming]_ of requests for the Trailer Reaction is likely people expressing how much they want their favourite Reaction team to React to their favourite show -- in other words, it's a sign of *appreciation* for the Crew, rather than a sign of disrespect. I know it may be hard to view it that way, but I do really think that that is what's behind it. The second thing is something another one of my favourite KZfaqrs, Philip DeFranco, often likes to say: _"If you tell people on the Internet not to do something, they then only_ _become more likely to do it."_ It sucks that it is this way, but I do think it's true. The All-CAPS probably don't help. I get why you and the other Mod wrote your posts in all-CAPS -- sheer frustration, in all likelihood -- but it is the question whether the Moderation efforts are actually helped by it. While Moderators are only Human and it thus makes perfect sense to me that you guys are just as susceptible to frustration as the rest of us are, in my humble opinion actually showing that frustration while acting as Moderator is only likely to lose you the respect of the people you are moderating, thus losing the effectiveness said moderation will have. But eh, it's not my job; it's yours..... so feel completely free to ignore everything I just said.

Don't worry Steven.... lot's of people still like you and your Episodes. I'm one of them. Except for _Hell Bent_, of course. Kill _Hell Bent_ with fire. In fact, come to think of it: can't you, before you leave at Christmas, write a Minisode where the Doctor goes back in time and personally prevents you from ever writing that horrible monstrosity? But anyway.... my point is: a lot of people still really, really like you. It's just that those that don't are more vocal than those that do. Plus, you are the Showrunner of _Doctor Who_. It's the same as for the Head Trainer of the English National Football (Soccer) Team, or for that matter the Head Trainer of the National Team of whatever country those reading this might be from: you always get blamed for everything. Russell T. Davies faced *just* as much criticism and hatred as you do now back in his day; it's just that Social Media became big around the time you took over, so we notice the vitriol a lot more with you. I personally suspect that we will hear outcries of how much people miss you somewhere near the end of Chris Chibnall's second Series (that's Series 12, I believe) -- not because I think Chibnall is going to be bad, but because such things come with the job when taking on Showrunning-duties for the biggest fictional show on British Television, and one of the biggest on Television *in general* to boot.

No one ever said his singular episodes were bad (in fact, they are amazing). But as soon as he has the freedom for a whole storyline, he messes up badly. I'm so glad he left the showrunner position. You can call it a minority as much as you want, but enough people wanted him gone..

The medical Doctor is played by Richard Wilson, who is most famous for his role of Victor Meldrew in UK sitcom 'One Foot in the Grave.' I think his character [a moaning old age pensioner] inspired 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.'

The one Bad Wolf reference in this episode, the word that were written on the the booms is German for Bad Wolf, and the next episode the doctor does acknowledge Bad Wolf, it also is kind of, start of the Bad Wolf arc, and in the season finales, Bad Wolf will reveal itself and it's true power.

Written by Steven Moffat. I think you'll find a lot of scary/creepy episodes with his name on them Dr Constantine: the Doctor's parting words to him were "Don't forget the Welfare State", and Dr C says "Hmm, good idea". Maybe there was a real Dr Constantine who did have a hand in creating the post-war Welfare State. I've not been able to find the right key words for Google to give me anything close to the answer

The sonic screwdrivers are made by the TARDIS, and the second Doctor was where the sonic screwdriver debuted. However, the first doctor used a ring in the same way.

I can't remember where, but I once heard/read that a big reason that the Doctor is able to get out of sticky situations (despite his seemingly erratic thinking process) is because of an aspect of being a Time Lord. Namely, they have a subconscious awareness of time (probability?). It's stated in the show that time is in flux, so Time Lords have the ability to semi-blindly (literally, if you'll remember the scene where he closed his eyes and stepped past the giant spinning blade in "The End of the World") go along the path that leads to the result that they desire. It's not foolproof, of course, but it helps the Doctor out immensely. I mean, the SPECIES is "Time Lord". It would be kind of weird if they were named thus PURELY because they INVENTED time machines. They must have some kind of direct connection (awareness, manipulation, etc.) to time, independent from their machines.

Sonic devices are just devices that use sound and soundwaves somehow to complete their function, there's no connection between them beyond that. It'd be like saying that all blasters in Star Wars are from the same place because they're all blasters.
