I thought that was going to be the detail they would point out during that bit, but it went unmentioned. @@NiallHosking no! No. No? It can’t be that simple. It looked to be something more. I really hope it isn’t just that. So much to build off of. Also, I don’t think the “old Ruby” was Ruby at all, but maybe Death or some other entity. That “old Ruby” was very much taller than Ruby’s 5’2”. That “old Ruby” looked at least 5’5”-ish, but definitely taller than Ruby. I think she was death (or another entity) that when Ruby did die in that hospital bed, it took her back to that place and allowed Ruby to look at her younger self through the eyes of that “old Ruby”-not-Ruby-maybe-death-entity’s eyes. Remember, we never saw that old woman taking. We just heard Ruby’s (the Ruby who died in the hospital bed) voice talking in the direction of Ruby.

I am probably super late to the game and everyone else has already said this but I'm old so, bear with me. I know it's not an Easter Egg for this episode but I was thinking about the fact that the song at the end of the Devil's Chord is "There's Always a Twist at the End," and wondering if that's a little hint that Susan Twist's characters could be the twist at the end of this season. Also in the Devil's Chord Maestro tells The Doctor that "There's something wrong with this creature" or something to that effect when referring to Ruby which could be that in 73 Yards people are suddenly seeing her for who she really is, probably unbeknownst to Ruby herself, which may be The One Who Waits.

Not sure this is an Easter egg, but in the Devil's Cord, Ruby asks The Doctor: "Did you break it?" When the TARDIS groans after arriving back in 1963. In 73 Yards, the lady in the red beret asks Ruby: "Did you break it?" Referring to the cotton circle on the cliff top. I also think the cotton circle may have been a representation of the TARDIS console

I mentioned this on last weeks ups and downs that the episode titles had all been spoken out loud by the characters. I theorised that it could possibly be a clue that they are maybe in an alternate dimension, or one that is in the form of a TV show. Hence the episode titles, and fourth wall breaks, and the inclusion of supernatural elements to the ‘show’. And I’m sticking with this theory.

One idea I came up with is maybe when they approach her she looks to them like regular young Ruby and when they look back they now see old Ruby where the young was so this scares the crap out of them and they run. As for her mother maybe she starts to think the original one is an imposter and doesn't want her around at all.

I went down a rabbit hole, and have some new theories. One: Much like the White and Black Guardians, what if there is a counter pantheon to the Pantheon of Discord?? One that works to keep balance and not let chaos rule. What if Ms. Flood and Ms. Twist are part of this opposing pantheon?? Two: I watched a video where someone spoke of The Toymakers Sister, which is someone I guess the Second Doctor encountered in a non-televised adventure. This person theorized that she could be the one who waits. Supposedly she has control over time itself and can create her own little pocket universes. They also brought up that Ms. Twist could be this woman considering she shows up everywhere right now, throughout time and space. Idk, I like the trickster theory, but I feel like that’s just too on the nose, you know?? That’s just me though…

In Number 9, I also sort of picked up on another Easter egg. Kate says one potential theory was the TARDIS perception filter interacting with the fairy circle because it’s landed close to it. In “Torchwood”, Captain Jack explains that spot in front of the fountain in Cardiff Bay (above Torchwood’s base) which makes people ignore you. He basically says exactly what Kate says here, because that’s where the TARDIS parks several times.

She didn't need to say anything, she was a banshee; and that is terrifying. But she was saying: 'I'm sorry I took so long', she repeated that phrase many times in the show. I don't know who Susan Twist is supposed to be, but I'm still rooting for Mrs. Flood to be a Fairy Godmother, it would explain her running away from the banshee so fast; she recognized it.

Okay so I've watched all the easter egg videos for this episode and here's my theory about what happened: The cotton string had some sort of mystical power that makes anyone who breaks it die at a young age - since the doctor is very old, it made him die at an earlier point in his timeline and hence disappear. It also curses whoever reads the letters placed inside it. The curse involves being forever followed a mythical being who is not seen unless looked for and mutters a curse that makes the person afraid of the cursed individual and compels them to abandon whatever they love - the person at the bar from going to the bar, Ruby's mother from seeing Ruby and Gwilliam from being Prime Minister without being able to understand why they want to abandon them leaving them only able to say "ask her". In the original timeline, I think Gwilliam existed and the doctor stopped him from starting a nuclear war so without the doctor being there, Ruby was left to do it. Mad max could've also inhabited the body of Gwilliam but I don't think it was necessarily the case. At the end when Ruby was dying, she welcomed the spirit that had been tormenting her pretty much her whole life as though it was an old friend. Because of this and perhaps the fact that she defeated "mad max", the spirit granted her the power in her final moments to go back in the body of the spirit and convey a message to her young self to stop the course of events from happening.

I loved this intro. 🤣 The question I have is how does this episode even work? How does the woman have a lerseltion filter and how did she go back in time? Also who was the woman at the end of the episode that showed up in old Rubys room? If it was Ruby, how?? Did she some how manage to send herself back in time to try and help Ruby? And then go to her Hospital room and send her present day self back in time? How did she keep popping up wherever Ruby went and why always 73 yards? Why did everyone run away from the woman and why couldn't we get a proper picture of her face?? Lastly, where did The Doctor even go?? He just disappeared and never came back until the end of the episode. Did he go to another dimention? He wasn't deleted because if that were the case the Tardis would have disapeared also. I would say this may come up in a later episode but this timeline was pretty much deleted when Ruby realised that The Doctor was going to step on the structure on the floor.

Does the albion symbol really have a striking resemblance to the saxon party? Theyre both white red and blue (how original...) but Saxon's party is a sideways 7/upside down V/uncrossed A over the pepsi logo, albion is clearly an A on a blue background with a white and red circle around it. As far as logos go, these two match in shape and color, but nothing else. Considering how simple logos have become in recent years, I struggle to see a connection there.

The old woman in the pub said some pretty significant things, even though they ended up trying to scare her. She said, "The cliff tops are a boundary between the land and the sea a liminal space neither here, nor there where rules are suspended." Then later on she says, "This land is a powerful place. It is said that he walks through the gaps, the Spiteful One." I also noticed that the PMs name is "Roger Ap Gwilliam"... If you just move the letter G, it becomes "Roger GAP William". Hinting the Spiteful One (could this be the old one or the one who waits that the toymaker never dared play) travelled between the gaps. Also adding the fact that it has been mentioned so many times by know how creatures like the toymaker and the maestro slipping into our world through gaps (created by the salt the doctor spread).

I adored this episode. Best one in a very long time. Probably the best episode since Heaven Sent. The best Doctor-lite episode at least since Turn Left, if not Blink. While the unanswered questions are frustrating, some may get answers eventually, while others like "what did Phantom Ruby say that scared people so much!?!" ultimately don't matter as much as the effect it had on the vibe of the story. I just loved this one, and it's easily one of my favorite RTD-written episodes. And every kudo imaginable to Millie Gibson for pulling off this spectacular performance straight out of the gate! Also, FUCK TRUMP. I pray that my fellow Americans wake the hell up and keep that human disaster out of office.

In my review I used pretty much the same examples as Council Of Geeks (Inception) and Harbo (Midnight) and while CoG loved the episode Harbo didn't love it. This pretty much sums up where I was: I really liked it with some caveats, and then made a second video pretty much immediately because it collapsed as I thought about it. This review is spot on, beat for beat, what I'd end up saying if I'd continued with my full breakdowns. (every episode since WBY has had a contrived ending for me so it didn't feel worth a full analysis with the same problem every week) It's the perfect example episode of good vibes bad structure, where people will make all sorts of 'what if this meant this' but each clear setting/act (pub, politics, old lady) each ends with a "but anyway that wasn't the point" and it breaks any cohesion this episode is trying to go with. And I whole heartedly agree with Harbo, Midnight had a mysterious entity but a clear plot. This has a mysterious entity and an unclear plot where the entity seemingly gets explained but the plot makes it unclear not the monster. Without Ruby having some kind of "oh my God I made it back" moment, it doesn't feel like a triumph nor a tragedy, it just feels empty and contrived. And without that clear impact on her (she seems to remember it but even that is ambiguous) we have our 'spinning top: did it fall or not?' moment but WITHOUT the real focus of 'but he got his kids back whether they're real or not and so he and us feel satisfied enough' moment.

More that she prevented a time paradox. Imagine the original timeline had the fairy circle binding Mad Jack and preventing him from messing with things and causing a nuclear war. But when the Doctor and Ruby messed with the fairy circle, they changed the timeline (similar to how Ruby stepped on a butterfly and changed her own timeline). So Ruby had to fix the timeline so it was back to normal, thus preserving the normal version of things the Doctor already spoke of.

13:14 A little something that I’d like to point out as both a smart detail and as analysis for the episode: Ruby receives less and less birthday cards as she ages. It’s pretty clear in retrospect that Ruby’s stalker represents her fears and insecurities of being abandoned, being unloved, and being the force that drives other people (and machines, in the TARDIS’ case) away from her. As we see in the date scenes in particular, these fears become a reality within this alternate version of Ruby’s future: the woman - Ruby’s insecurities - takes over her life, ruins her relationships, and makes her most trusted loved ones despise her. With this interpretation, I think that I can safely assume this slow decline in birthday cards to symbolize that as Ruby grows older, she starts to self isolate herself as her fears of abandonment quite literally haunt her, a self fulfilling prophecy that this version of her falls victim to. Anyway, I just thought it was a smart detail that clearly shows the path this version of Ruby symbolically takes in her life, and wanted to share
