"I think that's one hell of a bird" - This is peak Capaldi right here everyone. It goes without saying that 'Heaven Sent' is a true masterpiece and a beautifully portrayed battling of grief, loss and fear with a triumphant resolution. Everything about this episode is pitch-perfect; Steven Moffat delivering his best story yet, Rachel Talalay's direction is flawless, Murray Gold's music is superb, the pacing and structuring works perfectly, plus the Veil was truly bloody terrifying! However, this was Peter Capaldi’s finest hour and he earned it big time. Plus, it delivers one of the best cliff-hangers in the show's history. For me, this was not just the standout story of the series, but it was Moffat's best story, Capaldi's best story, the best story of Modern Who, and quite possibly, the best Doctor Who story of all time.

This is my all time favorite episode of the show (though as a whole I hadn't liked the past few recent seasons) but unfortunately for me it's sort of like utopia from season 3 in that it was a masterpiece of an episode and such an epic set up but the payoff wasn't great in the finale
@zeallust8542

@@zeallust8542 imo the follow ups to those masterpieces to close out both seasons didn't even meet the "good" threshold for me lol. They were average or even below it I think tbh. You've got me wondering though if you can close out a season with something that's only "pretty good" if it was just preceded by a masterpiece and for the audience to find that acceptable. I can't think of an example atm lol. All I can think of are episodes from shows that then exceeded the set up or flat out failed in ending a season and were simply not good imo lol. So maybe that goes to your point that even if they're just good they fail and I then perceive them as bad though surely I'm blanking out on some example in my memory. I think I'm struggling because I often find it hard to recall everything I've watched and then remember what in each series belonged to each season and then each episode lol

The scene with the crystal wall was the best for two reasons. 1) I loved how Capaldi got interrupted when he made progress. (only part way through a sentence just like he was part way through the wall) 2) while the progress of flesh & bone VS material 9 x harder than diamond is ridiculous. The implied moto of with enough time, water can erode continents. - is very cool.

This is the straight up best episode of Doctor Who. I don't care about your angels. I don't care your casts. This episode takes the main character, gives him no actual characters to play off, and sparks the ONE episode everyone always compares to Blink. It's the polar opposite to Blink, and that is why this is the best DW episode of all time. Sure, Blink had the best story and playthrough - but Heaven Sent is so good because it is ONLY the Doctor, not the absence of the Doctor. And with ONLY the Doctor, it gave us a story that simultaneously made us never able to properly understand her sacrifice for her friend, while also admitting the same while trying to protect their friends. The angels were so dangerous, they would never risk the lives of anyone who were not capable of dealing with their infestation, which the dealees did Moffat struck unbelievably largely out with this

_There was once on a time a shepherd boy whose fame spread far and wide because of the wise answers which he gave to every question. The King of the country heard of it likewise, but did not believe it, and sent for the boy. Then he said to him, “If thou canst give me an answer to three questions which I will ask thee, I will look on thee as my own child, and thou shalt dwell with me in my royal palace.” The boy said, “What are the three questions?” The King said, “The first is, how many drops of water are there in the ocean?” The shepherd boy answered, “Lord King, if you will have all the rivers on earth dammed up so that not a single drop runs from them into the sea until I have counted it, I will tell you how many drops there are in the sea.”_ _The King said, “The next question is, how many stars are there in the sky?” The shepherd boy said, “Give me a great sheet of white paper,” and then he made so many fine points on it with a pen that they could scarcely be seen, and it was all but impossible to count them; any one who looked at them would have lost his sight. Then he said, “There are as many stars in the sky as there are points on the paper; just count them.” But no one was able to do it._ _The King said, “The third question is, how many seconds of time are there in eternity.” Then said the shepherd boy, “In Lower Pomerania is the Diamond Mountain, which is two miles and a half high, two miles and a half wide, and two miles and a half in depth; every hundred years a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on it, and when the whole mountain is worn away by this, then the first second of eternity will be over.”_ _The King said, “Thou hast answered the three questions like a wise man, and shalt henceforth dwell with me in my royal palace, and I will regard thee as my own child.”_ *-The Shepherd Boy, by Brothers Grimm*

The real reason that The Doctor couldn't see Clara's face during the whole episode, is that her back was the last thing he saw of her when she was alive. Seeing her face at the end, is a way to show that she was still alive in his mind. Being his conscious and his carer, being more than just a memory. That's sad and beautiful at the same time. I just love the complexity of their relationship

Well folks, we're finally here. We're finally at one of the best, arguably _the_ best, episodes of Doctor Who ever. It's not all downhill from here, don't worry. Series 10 is good, while 11... I wouldn't say it's bad but at the same time I wouldn't say it's good. But that's a discussion for when we get there. The point is this is one of the highlights, if not _the_ highlight, of the entire show.

"There’s this reaction channel, and they ask their computer mouse how many seconds in eternity. And the mouse says, ‘There’s this button of plastic. It takes an hour to scroll it and an hour to click it, and every day a little reactor comes and punches his fist into the button. And when the entire button is chiseled away, the first second of eternity will have passed.’ You may think that’s a hell of a long time. Personally, I think that’s a hell of a button."

I think with three people watching (Aaron has seen it before and is very good at not revealing anything during rewatch) it's much easier to figure out the time loop and that he's on Gallifrey at the end, so neither one was surprising to them when it was revealed. They obviously appreciate how great this episode is, but their reactions here are not as *fun* to watch as some other reactors'.

But did the Doctor say “The Hybrid is me” (referring to himself) or did he say “The Hybrid is Me” (referring to Ashildr)? I forget whether the DVD subtitles capitalized the word “me” or not. Also, I have seen at least one reviewer give THIS episode a low score and the NEXT episode a high score.

In my opinion, this is the best Doctor Who episode, I've been waiting for this reaction since you guys started watching Doctor Who. On the point about the Doctor being a copy, they kind of handwave this as a Timelord thing but the doctor after figuring out the Bird thing upon seeing the Azbantium wall says to Clara that he remembers, right then. It sort of acts for a trigger for him and he remembers (somehow) all the other lives he's spent punching down that wall to get to Gallifrey.

This was the one episode I've been looking forward to seeing you guys react to the most, as you can probably tell in the comments that this is arguably one of the most popular episodes of Nu Who (It's my personal favorite). As great as Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith are (I'm not counting Whitaker in this, so as just to talk about those who have played the Doctor that you guys have all seen), I don't feel any of them could necessarily carry a full episode this well on their own. This episode really wouldn't have worked out as well if it had been anyone else, as Capaldi nailed it so perfectly. And I'm in agreement with the music. Even though the main theme used first appeared in Day of the Doctor when the three Doctors are coming up with the plan to freeze Gallifrey, it's become very synonymous with the 12th. Love that Eric put two and two together when he did as far as what's going on in the castle with the copies. I've known some just not really pay that much attention to the clothes at the fireplace and only put the pieces together during Capaldi's death monologue. It begs the question though, why was there a change of clothes there initially? For there always to be a set of clothes for the next copy to come and change into, while leaving their old set to dry, that means that the first one to arrive had to change into something.

if the doctor was dead in a way because of this episode, he died long before that. this is no different from a regular teleport, so any time he's teleported in the past he would have died if that's how you interpret it. the reason it works it because when you teleport, it puts your data into the machine, and "prints" it on the other end. the print being used is the exact same, absolutely nothing is changing each time. so, if doing it this much makes him dead "in a way", then so does any regular teleport.
