I'd rather see a Christmas special set on another world with their own weird holiday instead of Christmas.

Let us not forget that there was one other Christmas special. Way back in 1965 there was a special inserted right in the middle of another story. The Daleks' Master Plan ran for an epic 12 weeks (incidentally, can anyone imagine viewers now following a story for three months) and straddled Christmas. The producers were concerned when they noticed part 7 happened to fall on 25 December as they, probably correctly, worried that regular viewers might miss it and casual viewers would have no idea what was going on a month and a half into the story. This was long before the idea of the Christmas Special as an event came about and it was viewed largely as an inconvenience for serialised stories. To address their concerns they inserted a totally unconnected concoction of fluff and fun to run on Christmas day which ended with the Doctor turning directly to camera and, breaking the fourth wall, wishing viewers a happy Christmas. There is a common belief that this was an ad lib by Hartnell but the whole scene of the Doctor and his companions (Stephen and Sara Kingdom) sharing a celebratory glass of champagne--the only time I recall alcohol being consumed in the Tardis--was entirely in keeping with the final line and moreover the line was in the script! Whether the episode is good or bad is very difficult to know. There is no extant recording in the BBC archive and, as it was never sold overseas (the Master Plan being offered as an eleven part story without the Feast of Steven) it is very unlikely to be recovered. Given that it had large elements of slapstick and visual comedy the reconstructions from telesnaps and soundtrack are always going to struggle to capture the spirit of the story but it seems like it was a fun romp very much in the panto tradition. Although I don't have any clear memory of the episode overall, I do still recollect a few scenes even over 50 years later so there must have been something about it...

I love Husbands of River Song. One interesting thing is that it's kinda the reverse of Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead. In the Library the Doctor did not recognize River. And now River does not recognize the Doctor. And it's heartbreaking (like every River story is) and beautiful.

I love the speech he delivers to the Daleks in Time of the Doctor. "NEVER! EVER! TELL ME THE RULES!" And I also love the speech he gives Clara about changing, unlike Tennant, he welcomed the regeneration. "We all change, when you think about it, and that's good, you've got to keep moving, so long, as you remember all the people that you used to be."

Capaldi entering the TARDIS is one of the best scenes of all Doctor Who's, and his "Hello Sweetie" and that smile. It's one of my top 10 favorite episodes of all time. Then a Christmas Carol, would be my 2nd favorite Christmas special. "I saw a chimney on Christmas Eve ,and my brain just said what the hell"

I really want the Roboform Santas to have their own _actual_ episode, since the idea of robot scavengers that turn up and take objects of value before the "main event" turns up is a decent one, yet they always end up relegated to Christmas specials.

New viewer to the channel here. I really love how easily you just RAMBLE on and on and on about whatever the hell you feel like regarding episodes or even just tiny details within each episode. Nowadays with this huge video essay trend it's SO damn comforting to see a channel that feels so homemade, so genuine and feels like it exists purely for the sake of geeking out over doctor who episodes the way I do when I think back to my love of the "new who" series as a kid. I'm someone who has never watched the classic who episodes, nor have I felt a need to watch them (but then growing up I never had a means through which to actually watch classical who eps) but I carry a deep nostalgic love for the show with Christopher Eccleston being my first doctor and David tennant being my *definitive* "Doctor". Call me biased as a viewer hailing from Scotland to wind up being a tennant fan boy, but only this year did I decide to watch all of matt smith's episodes and give him a fair shot since I hated on his first appearance when I was younger. After having the luxury to just stream episode after episode on demand these days, matt is equally as brilliant as David tennant even if he doesn't quite hold that nostalgic place in my heart. Suddenly rewatching all those epidoes from Eccleston to the end of Smith was eventually what lead me to discover this channel. So as a childhood fan of the new who, with it being the only who I knew, I just want to say thank you for sharing all that you do on this site because after that many years it feels awesome to watch someone just TALK and nothing else as andlessly as you do, the same way I do when anyone asks me some throwaway question about anything regarding Doctor who. Thanks for geeking out with all the rest of us, mister. This channel is a gem among all the crap I have recommended to me by KZfaq otherwise. My favorite doctor who episode is in fact a Christmas special, the husbands of river strong, I just find it hilarious.

Yeah Clara was genuinely supposed to leave in Last Christmas but Jenna Coleman decided to stay on for series 9 so they changed, which is a shame because it is a great exit for her

My list is- 1. A Christmas Carol- One of my absolute favourite stories 2. The Snowmen- A complete blast and a great plot 3. The Christmas Invasion- Very well done and a great introduction to Ten 4. The End of Time- I know it makes no sense but I just really love it for the sheer emotions it has. 5- Time of the Doctor- Unfairly maligned. It has great character work and a satisfying wrap up to Eleven's era. 6- Voyage of the Damned- Utter crap, but entertaining as hell crap. Love it. 7. Return of Doctor Mysterio- A nice little superhero romp that needs more love. 8. Husbands of River Song- Very fun although a bit too over the top. 9. The Next Doctor- Pretty average. Not great, not terrible. 10. Runaway Bride- It's not great, but it's still pretty fun and it's better in hindsight. 11. Last Christmas- Dull and ultimately pointless. Nick Frost is wasted and the story is padded. 12. TDTWATW- Pain...pain...pain...pain...

What if Clara left in the magicians apprentice after being shot by a dalek? In my opinion this was the best time for Clara to exit. So my reasoning behind this was because firstly it would really bring back that fear factor the Daleks have been lacking in recent years but also missys master with her being able to escape and betray Clara also bringing the fear factor back to the master too. This would be a great time to get a new companion as there were so many in the cast of series 9 that would've been perfect for the role of the companion like O'Donnell or Cass from Under The Lake or the guy played by rufus hound in the woman who lived or even osgood or Kate.

You mentioned doing a ranking of all the regeneration arc and I'm so down with that, but I'd also be really interested to see a ranking of the 1st episodes with each new doctor! :D

A Christmas Carol is not only my favorite Christmas special, but one of my all time favorite episodes of all time. It's so sweet and lovely and has that GORGEOUS song by Katherine Jenkins and it's one of the few things that can still make me feel like Christmas is magical.

Best Doctor Who Christmas special: The Feast of Steven

Honestly, I really don't think it's fair to call Moffat's first regeneration scene/episode "self-indulgent" when RTD wrote an episode where the Doctor absorbs radiation poisoning and goes on to lament for a full 10 minutes about how much more he could have lived and *then* goes and visits *every single companion and near-companion he's ever had* before *FINALLY* regenerating. Don't get me wrong, I loved Tennant/10 and the scenes wrapped up his companions' arcs nicely, but *MAN,* if that isn't self-indulgent I don't know what is.

Last Christmas is one of my favorite Capaldi episodes. I just love how much fun it is and it has so many “ah ha” moments.

Honestly can't believe how many christmas specials there has been, I remember watching season 1 and not even expecting a Christmas special, this list also reminds me of how many specials i haven't liked...although capaldi made them better, 12 really had a fantastic chemistry with almost every character he encountered

For me, The Time of the Doctor feels too short for the amount of stuff it tries to do and The End of Time goes on for too long as there is too much filler and some stuff that is set up in part 1 gets taken care of so easily in part 2 that they felt like a waste of time.

I think all four capaldi Xmas episodes (except maybe a bit of last Christmas) are brilliant. Last Christmas, while the Clara and Danny stuff was really bad, the villain was good and I loved the characters. Husbands was great chemistry between river and the doctor and a sweet episode that is quite comical, Mysterio Was a nice episode and really good superhero story. Twice upon a time was excellent, a brilliant tonal episode despite having no real villain

As someone who really loves River's characterisation in the Silence in the Library two-parter, so much so that I still to this day think it's the best story River has ever featured in, The Husbands of River Song goes from pretty good to insulting when we get to the big reveal that she knows she's going to die the next time they meet so they spend 12 years together. It makes no sense in the context of Silence in the Library, not to mention there was already a short featuring Matt Smith about him taking her to Derillium. I'm not sure if most people miss this or just don't care, but that's my opinion. Also, I'm in the "loved Voyage of the Damned" camp. It had an excellent musical suite accompanying it, and one of the best lines from the Doctor to date.

I found "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" to be unwatchable. Literally so--I turned it off just about 10 minutes in, the only time I've ever done that with Doctor Who, either ClassicWho or NuWho. But everyone else seems to think it was at least good, so I suppose I'll have to give it a go again at some point.

I know it wasn't broadcast on Christmas, but The Unquiet Dead really should be included, since it takes place on Christmas. And it even has Dickens, who'll always be associated with Christmas even though only a few of his stories are Christmas-related (and most people only know one of them). Your explanation for not including part 2 of End Of Time is perfectly valid, but it does make me wonder about the possibility of a New Years list. Obviously, it'll have to wait a few years since there's only been two so far (counting End Of Time). You could pad the list with the TV Movie, though, since New Years is a big part of the plot. (But I guess it wasn't broadcast on New Years, was it?)

My altime favorite is easily A Christmas Carol! I love the story, I love the doctor in this one, I love the love tragedy between Cazran and Abigail it's just wonderfully done. I especially love how they took the classic tale and put a sci fi element into it! To summarize this is a must watch for me at Christmas time!! And time of the doctor too but it's hard to see my favorite doctors last story

David Morrissey should get to play the doctor in the future

Time of the Doctor was the basis for another full season of Matt Smith. When Smith decided to leave, Moffat tried to boil it down to a single Christmas Special and it seems more like an outline; leaving you feeling like there is crucial information missing that we just aren't told about (for example, the old Doctor limps because he was supposed to have a wooden leg)

I forgot "Runaway Bride" was even a Christmas special, so as much as I love Donna as a companion I can appreciate its ranking on this list. I always remember that it was a separate story that leads to that wonderful moment she and the Doctor meet up again, but again, almost forgot it was a Christmas special so that tells me something lol

My favorite is probably Husbands of River Song, I didn't expect it to be that good but it is SO FUNNY and also SO EMOTIONAL and I love seeing Capaldi and Alex Kingston play off each other, their chemistry was off the charts!! Also it's just fun seeing River Song being the serious one for once (at least at first) and the Doctor playing around, especially since Capaldi doesn't have as many straight up silly comedic moments. I thought the episode was gonna be meh and I couldn't picture what River and 12 would even be like together, but damn that special really exceeded my expectations, and was just a fun time all around with a really beautiful poignant ending. I friggin love it.

I’m glad to hear some kind words about Mysterio. I definitely prefer Husbands over it but I think the pastiche was done wonderfully. It perfectly balances poking fun at the all too common conventions and absurdities of the genre with an overall respect for the reasons behind its cultural impact and staying power.

The best non-Doctor thing to come out of The Christmas Invasion is that one blooper where a bunch of Sycorax actors are standing in a triangle formation and start singing Bohemian Rhapsody. It's goofy in the best possible way!

I consider A Christmas Carol to be the best. Didn’t take place on Earth. The world didn’t need saving. It was good fun. Supporting characters were great. And Matt Smith as 11 was just perfect.

someone's probably told you already, but the snowmen were in that story because the first story featuring the Great Intelligence was "The Abominable Snowmen" (although the G.I. attacked via robotic yeti, rather than living snowmen), which is from the Second Doctor's Era. It was a cute nod to classic fans. Moffat did it because he had found out about the return of "The Web of Fear" (which was the sequel to "The Abominable Snowmen") and "the enemy of the world" which was going to happen in late 2013, so he wanted to give a little clue to those hardcore fans out there. Like me :)

My two favorite Christmas episodes were The Snowmen and Last Christmas and the thing that you like the least about Last Christmas is the very thing that I liked the most but then I wanted Jenna to stay.

My list goes: 1) Husbands of River Song - it may be a bit lower in other circumstances, but it's very special to the boyfriend and me 2) Return of Doctor Mysterio - it's got humour, it is sweet and positive, Capaldi is amazing 3) End of Time - Tennant ending his run in a blast, loved the dynamic with Wilf and the Doctor's angst 4) Time of the Doctor - I love that regeneration scene and the whole story brings me to tears everytime 5) Christmas Carol - do you know in 900 years of time and space I've never met anyone who wasn't important before 6) Snowmen - Doctor dealing with the grief of losing the Ponds and Victorian Clara were very touching 7) Next Doctor - great character (Jackson) dealing with what happened to his child and the conflicting memories 8) Last Christmas - it's too odd for me maybe, but I do appreciate the dichotomy of horror and wonder 9) The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe - found it touching but slightly boring 10) Voyage of the Damned - it's alright, but I didn't love it, it felt too separated from the rest of the Doctor's story 11) Christmas Invasion - I only like how Rose realises it's still the Doctor in the end, the rest I found boring 12) Runaway Bride - I love Donna, but she really grew on me. I think my Top 6 are pretty definite. The order of the Bottom 6 are somewhat changeable though. 12 - *The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe* (there's little actively wrong with it but there's a lack of things going for it) 11 - *The Time of the Doctor* (much better upon rewatch as you are not expecting the pay-off's that should be there. So I don't think it's great - it definitely doesn't achieve all of what it "should" - but it has a lot of good moments and works well in some ways as a regeneration story) 10 - *A Christmas Carol* (I'm very much in two mind's or even three with this story. As its own entity, I think it doesn't get the pacing right but is really well-acted, heartwarming and a very good christmas story. However, it completely contradicts both the lore and the Doctor's character development that had been built up through the RTD era when it comes to changing time) 9 - *The Snowmen* (Flawed in the way that much of Series 7 is but is definitely an enjoyable story overall. My main reason it's not higher is that it's not as enjoyable upon rewatch. I don't think Clara's introduction has the same effect when you know it doesn't ultimately amount to anything) 8 - *The End of Time* (great character writing. Weak story writing) 7 - *The Return of Doctor Mysterio* (It's a very good standalone story but doesn't leave a lasting impression) 6 - *The Next Doctor* (a great sense of fun with emotional character moments. Very much the beginning of that final year of the grandiose Tenth Doctor) 5 - *Last Christmas* (I'm just about to rewatch it for the first time but first time around I thought it had a good dream concept and creature design; it handled Santa Claus very well; it dealt with Clara's grief very well; and it had some other moments of emotional character writing) 4 - *The Husbands of River Song* (I think it's judged poorly because of its placement after Series 9. The show goes from epic, big, grandiose and slightly dark in tone to light and fun and I think that because of that, it comes across as cheap to a lot of people but watching it straight after rewatching Series 7 + Specials - granted that sets a low bar - I found it to be a great standalone-ish story. Yes, it's light and fun and that tone is handled really well. The comedy works. The relationships between the characters work. The story works. But that's not all there is to it. It handles both the character of River Song and her story - because they are two different things that don't always work at the same time - fantastically well. I honestly think this is THE underrated gem of the Twelfth Doctor's era. It's simply misunderstood) 3 - *Voyage of the Damned* (I debated putting this in fourth place given my praise of that other story but I think that this episode has a better - granted, not entirely original - story with the addition of believable characters who you care about and a point at the end which foreshadows later events. I think it does drag in the final portion (after the villain is defeated) but I think the thoroughly enjoyable story beforehand makes up for it) 2 - *The Christmas Invasion* (my opinion does change a bit on this story as it's quite slow but I think it's the action moments that really make it a fun watch. The opening, the Santa's, the christmas tree, and everything after the protagonists are teleported aboard the Sycorax spaceship) 1 - *The Runaway Bride* (Perfectly paced; Donna develops so much through the course of the story; unbelievable creature effects; great handling of the Doctor's feelings towards the Series 2 finale; very funny; and that TARDIS car chase)

If The end of time parts one and two both counted as Christmas Specials, would it still end up being number one? :)

I don’t know what it is but I love The Runaway Bride. Easily top 3 Christmas Specials alongside End of Time and Twice Upon a Time. It’s a pure romp, cheesy and ludicrous, and I just roll with it.

as a preamble, i just want to say that i really like your videos man but on 'the snowmen' - they snowmen weren't just there for 'winterness' - I dont think you have seen the original great intelligence stories have you? do you know about the recent recovery of the web of fear? anyways, originally the great intelligence used the yeti, or 'abominable snowmen' as his minions, since originally he was a body-less mind. the killer snowmen in this story are a reference to the original, furrier, snowmen. btw you should really watch the web of fear, my friend.

I like that these stories are light (sometimes) and fun for the holidays Runaway Bride: Had fun reversing the jokes from the previous special. The only great thing is Donna's introduction The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe: I love how this celebrates the joy of motherhood but also the struggles of going through a tragedy during the holidays and explaining that one parent is dead to your children. Christmas Invasion: This is great for a first Christmas episode but really sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest The Snowmen: My first Christmas special and it was so good. I enjoyed Clara here, the ice nanny attack and The Doctor coming out of retirement The Time of the Doctor: This one felt like it was going on way too long while watching. The Christmas link was pretty forced here with the town being called Christmas. Also the fact this was originally supposed to be his ultimate death is also strange. Voyage of the Damned: I liked that it still linked to the previous specials and brought us Wilf but the villain plot was dumb and it was also like Poseidon Adventure The Next Doctor: This is pretty average and the story of the fake Doctor is sad when you find out who he really is (not sad in sadness sake but that they went that way) A Christmas Carol: I liked how this was a Doctor Who way of doing the classic tale in a roundabout way and overall fun. Also loved the music Last Christmas: I liked this and how it did turn out to be a dream. It was fun seeing Santa and the 'last Christmas' moment with Clara. This originally was supposed to be Clara's last but she chose to come back after they finished so they had to reshoot Husbands of River Song: I liked seeing how River was like here and how she reacted to Capaldi. Also the introduction of Nardole... I would've been fine if this were his only appearance but no they had to bring him back. The Return of Doctor Mysterio: I liked the superhero aspect but didn't like that the Doctor kept visiting the guy over the years to check up on him The End of Time: Wilf was a great companion to see and the Master being a threat was great. Seeing Simms in all those outfits is funny though. I do wish Christmas was more apparent though.

Tennant ones are the best. However, the best non-Tennant one is The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe. Actually quite liked it, for a Moffat one. I also keep forgetting The Snowmen even exists.

I generally like Moffat Christmas episodes. He has a more fantastical/fairytale way of story telling anyway so they kinda work for me. Even the much maligned wardrobe one. I love the last matt Smith one too. It was quite down beat but I thought in a good way.

Time of the Doctor is my favourite Christmas special

For me, I loved the End Of Time when I watched it but when I look back on it after seeing Matt and Peter, I didn’t really like it tbf, I think the 10th doctor not wanting to change is a bit strange since it’s not really explained why, my only guess is that the Doctor just likes the body he’s in but after regenerating 10 times before you wouldn’t think, same with Peter I think it’s weird for him to suddenly just not want to change, I think Peters doctor did it better because he’s just sick of changing but the 10th doctor just didn’t want to and sort of made the doctor a bit of a spoiled brat, but I still love the Master and the reveal of who the four knock was that blow my mind when I first watched it

Honestly, I knew the End of Time was going to be Council's number 1, but... I can't see the appeal. In fact, I had more of a "when is this going to be over" feel with Tennant's goodbye than with the End of Time. Speaking of: I LOVED the End of Time. That episode was brilliant - it's up there in my all times favorites along with Heaven Sent. It's also the episode when we finally learn what's the Silence, and my only issue with it actually, is the unnecessary Amy cameo.

A Christmas Carrol, The Christmas Invasion, Twice Upon A Time, The Wedding of River Song, and the rest are spoiled eggnog.

The only official Christmas specials have been since David Tennant and the Christmas invasion because they have been on the 25 th , any others although maybe christmassy are not official Christmas ones.

Interesting. I wouldn't have ranked "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" so high, since to me it didn't feel very Christmas-y. Apart from the opening scene with young Grant, I don't recall Christmas featuring in it at all. And there wasn't much focus on the Doctor either - it was all about Grant and his secret identity and the love story with his childhood crush/employer.
