"Right? RIGHT?!" It only took 6 days, but MrTARDIS finally has a controversial opinion on a beloved classic. Also, I'm aware I say "1980s" instead of "1960s" at the beginning. Amazing how you can watch a video dozens of times and still miss mistakes until the upload. Please "like" and share this video and also leave a comment to appease the almighty algorithm!

I never thought that the plan to lure the Doctor to the antiques shop was the Daleks. I always thought it was Waterfield’s plan. The Daleks told him what to do and what the Doctor is like but so don’t think they would bother would bother capturing the Doctor in 1966 if they could let a human do it for them.

The three childlike Daleks (triplets? Let’s call them triplets) were honestly so adorable to me, I have a strong liking for Daleks and maybe got a bit too motherly on seeing these ones behave like kids, but my reaction ended up being “WELP I’M GONNA ADOPT THREE DALEKS” It’s a real shame about most of the script and how disjointed the story seems, because it’s a great concept

From what I understand the Cybermen were so ubiquitous through Troughton’s run explicitly because the show runners wanted a Dalek replacement lmao. Hence WHY they took the 70s off when Terry’s US deal fell through and the Daleks came back.

To be fair, this was a point in time where it wasn't 100% established that the Doctor is an alien. In fact, when the Doctor offers himself as a test subject, yes, the Doctor trying to make himself a guinea pig for the Daleks, one Dalek denies his request because they say "You have travelled too much through time. You are more than human."

I always think of these stories as being like a miniseries. There's bound to be filler eps and occasionally even a weird subplot or two. As long as the filler is enjoyable, then i'm good. I found Evil to be enjoyable all the way through. Granted, I will say that the plot is pretty muddled, and while that will never be 100% fixed I do think animating this story--or finding the missing episodes--will help this gel a bit better. Plus, the ending is great.

I haven't seen all of this one, only the surviving clips and episode but I like what I've seen. I disagree about this one being a disappointment. I loved listening to it and it's the story from the Troughton era I'd most like to see come back complete or get the animation treatment. FLASH! Evil of the Daleks animation coming out in September! One of my favourite stories of all time this one. I don't want to go into a long waffle, but I personally reckon the reviewer has it kind of wrong in a lot of places here. Just one point I'll make, I think it's actually a feature of the daleks... whether deliberate or otherwise, that they have a tendency to careen from being incredibly intelligent, cunning and manipulative to being positively obtuse and suicidally reckless. I think it was Terrance Dicks who said... but whoever it was I agree with them, that "inside that casing they are actually INSANE." So their coming up with a plan that's convoluted and perhaps doesn't quite make sense would... in my humble opinion at least, be entirely in character for them.

I remember watching this as a kid, perhaps because it was repeated. This bits I liked at the time were the "humanized" Dalek giving the Doctor a ride and the Turkish wrestler stuff (i might have found that boring). What surprised me on seeing the clips/episodes was how broad the other characters such as Maxtible and Waterfield were. The supporting cast in Troughton stories were often wildly stereotypical (playing to the sixties' love of camp?). Still, Day of the Daleks captured similar excitement at the Daleks raiding the press conference!

Technically speaking the Doctor isn't the Daleks greatest enemy at this point. And as for The whole thing with the TARDIS and the Docto's regeneration, it's safe to assume that at this point in their history the Daleks don't know about the Time Lords or Gallifrey itself yet.

I wouldn't even be too upset about them knowing about the Doctor's tardiness and not his alien nature. Unless it came up in conversation, I think anyone would learn about someone's mannerisms than their biology.
@nickthepick8043
@nickthepick8043 2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, in some Dalek source books, it outright specified this. I think it was sometime during this story that the Daleks were beginning to be aware that the Doctor wasn't a vastly intelligent human being. It wasn't until Resurrections of the Daleks that they became aware of the existence of Time Lords, and the Doctor's connection to them. Hell, Genesis of the Daleks has been outright proclaimed as the first shot fired in the time war.
@option3590
@option3590 6 ай бұрын
I’d argue that first point. Daleks were characterised as indomitable if-not for the Doctor’s intervention. Even if we entertain the idea that some offscreen invasions were foiled by other individuals with comparable wit or resources, they’d be confined to mortal lifespans. The Doctor retained his uncanny ability to show up ANYWHERE in Dalek history and foul things up. Hence why a mere two defeats by his hand were enough to warrant a time-travelling death squad. NOBODY beats the Daleks twice and gets away with it. And then he makes a mockery of THAT too? Who else even compares as their nemesis by this point?
@IsaacWhittakerDakin

I really like what David Whittaker did with the Daleks, it introduced concepts such as what if they were benevolent and what if they had humanity? Furthermore I like how we even question The Doctor's alliegences, would he betray his own friends just so he can get the TARDIS back? However, it should have been shorter at 6 episodes we don't need a wild goose chase in episode 1.

For me the highlight was the Dalek Emperor. The huge looming form and the loud booming Dalek voice, I just really wish that character was not only portrayed as a bigger threat, but also got to appear in more stories than the 9th Doctor’s finale (I’d love to see him in his TV 21 casing at some point, or just another huge emperor again). Idk, I just think there’s something so ominous and fascinating about a huge looming Dalek, which’s main power isn’t firepower, but the power of his word, to manipulate and control other Daleks to do what it wants.

You have GOT to watch all the missing black and white stories via the Loose Cannon telesnap reconstructions. Any other way just doesn't do them justice. Then, you'll appreciate Evil of the Daleks more. Everything was on pirate bay last time I looked. Remember, David Whitaker actually BESTED Terry Nation at writing the first Dalek story, a seemingly undoable feat, with that first novel he wrote. I'll NEVER forget reading that at 10 years old back in 1985. When I first saw the actual story the next year on PBS, the ONLY time it was ever broadcast here in the states, the first four episodes lived up to it, but then everything seemed to slow down, as mentioned in the review here for that story. In the novel, at least from what I remember, all the stuff with the expedition and the radioactive lake are just as exciting. Hell, he even gave us a better intro to the characters with his redo of An Unearthly Child in that same novel, going from memory. Whitaker really could do no wrong, just look at how great the Edge of Destruction, The Crusade, and Power of the Daleks turned out. The ONLY person who was better at writing for the Daleks than their creator Terry Nation.

I was lucky to see Evil of the Daleks on its original broadcast in 1967 and again the following year at the end of the next season. I loved it and appreciated it at the time as one of the very best Doctor Who stories. There was a reason that it was the first DW story to be repeated. Now that only one episode survives the story makes little impact on audio. I hear what you say but I cannot agree with your judgement. Ian.

Hunh.. It's interesting to see how much of the missing dalek episodes TRD used in his dalek stories to re introduce them. The daleks as hiding and planning geniuses is really interesting. You said you were bored of this story. But don't forget the age group who watched this originally, I'm 60 and remember this episode where the emperor dalek blew up it still sticks in my memory as it was just so awesome (back then) along with what I think was the most scary, the cybermen on moonbase where they bounce across the moon surface in slow motion with that weird music. I doubt i wasn't the only 7 year old that didn't sleep on that night. Those of us kids that watched dr who back then were being brought up on a tv diet of watch with mother, the wooden tops, bill and Ben, stingray, fireball xl5 and supercar. So before slagging off these stories just remember the age of those watching back in the 60s we weren't as tv astute as kids now and dr who was mainly aimed at younger generation not unmarried adults still living with their parents.

@@MrTARDIS As pre teens we didn't care so much about the script and sub plots, these stories were written to entertain us for half an hour and leave a cliff hangar to get us to watch the following week. It's funny listening to people take apart a script from a 60 year old children's show thinking that there's a deep meaning and these plots have to make sense. I only watched dr who till pertwee took over and he was the start of the rot, he was such a lousy actor who had even worse scripts to work with and the beeb penny pinching attitude towards the show. Started to watch with my kids when the David Tennant era started, great acting, great stories, great props and CGI. then capaldi started and it all went haywire again to what we have today, program full of visceral bile and hatred.

I watched your review immediately after finishing this serial. Thanks for helping me to realize just how many great moments and ideas this story features, despite its meandering lack of coherence and inconsistent characterization of the Doctor. I was initially pretty disappointed given how highly regarded this story is (it ranked something like #40 in the DWM poll from 2014), but now I'll just choose to remember it for its fun moments and ideas. The concept of the human Daleks was great, and I loved the time travel sub-plot from the 1960s to Victorian London and eventually to Skaro. The dissension from Jamie is also a nice bit of character development to show he doesn't just blindly obey the Doctor (as he mostly had during all previous episodes).
