To me, the relationship between the Doctor and Jamie is just as iconic as the relationship between the Doctor and Sarah Jane. The chemistry between Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines was fabulous.

I love it when the Second Doctor says "Our lives are different to anybody else's thats the exciting thing, there’s nobody in the universe can do what we're doing" always sends a shiver down my spine, that line, I think sums up all of Doctor Who for me

That moment was unscripted. Frazer Hines talked about it at Gallifrey One back in February.

Victoria is an utter badass in this episode. Going straight from the trauma of her father's death on an alien planet to plugging X Ray Laser caps in Cyber ass!

20:10 I always thought Toberman's single-word shouting was due to partial cyber-conversion and mind control, rather than a lack of intellect. In Episode 4 we see the cyber-controller repeatedly transmitting energy waves to control Toberman, and his mental state is directly referenced by the Doctor and Jamie. Toberman then pushes through this mind control with encouraging words from the Doctor, and turns on the Cyber Controller. This explains, to me at least, why he speaks in single words. He's still fighting the mind control and partial cyber-conversion. You can see that earlier in the story he's more composed and articulate, though still doesn't get much to say unfortunately.

It’s funny how the Daleks were given the most attention with having longer stories, usually six parters, while the Cybermen, for the most part, were relegated to just 4 parters. Even with ‘The Invasion’, an eight parter, the Cybermen don’t appear until the end of episode 4.

You’re right, Mr TARDIS. The scene where the Doctor and Jamie start to walk in while holding hands like a couple about to dance was not scripted - Troughton and Hines made it up themselves, and decided to just throw it in without the director’s knowledge to ensure it was kept in.

As I recall, David Banks's Cyberman book had an awesome illustration of Toberman fighting against the Cyber Controller to close the doors. It used to send shivers down my spine as a kid and to my mind is one of the most iconic Cyberman related moments.

I love Toberman, honestly he's one of my favourite characters from the Classic era. I'm probably just a sucker for noble sacrifices. Still, that moment when he fights a Cyberman for the first time and is over powered was fantastic. You could tell how scared he was, the actor did a great job with limited material.

The doctor and jamie holding hands was confirmed as a joke by troughton as it was a last take so they both thought it was the best opportunity to confuse the cast and crew

I remember buying this on VHS back in 1992..it was extremely exciting and added to what was a great year for me personally.

I'm glad that you mentioned Toberman originally being planned to be deaf, since that last-minute change to remove that aspect explains a lot about why people treat him so strangely. Still it's not the most progressive representation -- but then that's mid 60s TV for ya.

I actually know the guy who gets shot at 9:35. His name's Bernard Holley, I meet him through a friend of the family, very nice guy. He would go on to have a more prominent role as the lead Axon in 'The Claws of Axos', one of my personal favourite stories.

Toberman having a hearing aid would have been great foreshadowing for his conversion. If they weren't going to give him any meaningful dialogue in removing it, they should have left it that way.

Enjoyed the segment with Josh Snares - a nice addition to the format that gives a bit of context to the missing Cybermen episodes. Definitely consider doing more collabs in the future!

I think this was one of my first Classic Who stories when the classic series got shown on the Horror Channel (no idea why it was on that channel).

Funny thing is, most people seemed to like this serial before it was found. Maybe it was 'cause folks' imaginations were more entertaining when fueled by the audios, maybe it was just the act of wanting that made it better to some, I'm just glad we have it, period.

Good review. The Tomb of the Cybermen is my favourite story (and also the first classic story I ever saw). With regards to Toberman, I think that's open to interpretation. The fact he was originally deaf and that this was changed at the last minute (I don't think this should have been changed) opens up a few problems, but I actually think from that point on it's down to interpretation. For example, he is portrayed at first glance as being a bit dumb. I don't think Toberman is actually dumb; certainly, he is under the influence of Kaftan - she speaks, he obeys - but the way he obeys is the interesting part. He manages to stealthily sneak past the others in the main control room, out to the ship to sabotage it right under the nose of Captain Hopper (if I remember correctly), and smiles when news of the sabotage reaches the team, knowing he did it and absolutely nobody suspects him because he used his image as the "dumb servant" to get away with it. With regards to his random shouting of "Evil!", I think again this is not him being dumb, but resisting the Cyberman's conditioning of his mind - like when you need to remember something, so you repeat it over and over so you don't forget, Toberman was doing the same: reminding himself that the Cybermen are evil. His bravery at the end is the icing on the cake for Toberman really, he's not dumb, he's a smart but brave guy - and his arc is one of the best things about this story.

Your superlatives are fully earned here. It's a delicious episode, and it make important contributions Cyberlore. It's light years ahead of anythig the First Doctor had as far as character development. This my the first B and W Cyberstory I had seen, and my second Troughton story...it made him my favorite classic Doctor. The scene with The Doctor and Victoria speaking of loss and why their lives are utterly unique is one of my favorite Doctor moments of all, and his scenes with Jamie were groundbreaking. It's also got my favorite "quarry" scene :) As for Toberman, yes, I do think the references to his deafness might have helped, and there may be an artifact of that in the story...his hearing aid might have made him, from the Cybermen's perspective, already technologically enhanced, and may have given them a vulnerability to exploit. Stewart was surely bigger than his role as a successful performer. He was a trailblazer...he opened the first integrated gym in the UK in 1953. He did well enough in his career to become a successful restaurant. He passed at 83...a good life by any measure, surely.

I love this story. The drama, comedy, character interactions, atmosphere etc. It's my favorite of all the Patrick Troughton stories.

Stories like this is why Patrick Troughton is my second favourite classic Doctor after Tom Baker.

This is my favourite second Doctor story.- And probably my favourite cybermen story; except for maybe Earthshock or Attack of the cybermen.

Before watching this, I watched your old review of 'The Tomb of the Cybermen' a decade ago (yes I still watch your old stuff and I'm not afraid to admit it), and I was interested to see how much your opinion of the episode changed, especially regarding Tobaman.

I remember an issue of Doctor Who magazine where Steven Moffat praises this episode, while poking fun at the Cybermen locking themselves in a giant freezer.

I recall the excitement of the discovery of this one and then finally getting a copy on VHS all those years ago. I loved it then, I still love it now. An essential classic Who story. I also believe that Matt Smith based some of his Doctor on watching this serial.

Oh the irony of the Doctor telling Viki that no one else can do what they do with the Time Meddler in his past and the Time Lords coming into his future. This is a great review. I read this story in a novel before I got to watch the full adventure on screen. This is a solid story, and I wish a modern story would take ques from it. And yes- please do a review of Doctor/Jamie moments. Jamie was one of the best companions as he saw the Doctor as a wizard and the adventures with him as the stuff of fantasy come to life. Jamie proves the show can be enriched by a companion from another time zone!

In trems of the Patrick Troughton stories, I would rank Tomb of the Cybermen in my Top 10 favourite Dr Who Troughton stories.

It's such a luck that this so well written episode survived. IMO, it represents the pure spirit of the Throughton era.

I appreciate the reviews. I, too, enjoy this one very much, and your reviews bring out things I didn't consider; for example, the Doctor & Jamie interactions here. I quite like the quiet character moments (so much lacking in modern shows), such as the exchange between the Doctor and Victoria.

Great review and I really want to watch this serial now, it looks fantastic! But I feel trying to view aspects of the story through a 2020 lens is not really a justified criticism. Because one of the characters is black and a servant doesn't mean he is immediately a "problematic" element. The two characters who are supposedly his masters seem to be written to be the kind of characters who may have a servant to do the heavy lifting for them. And just because it's set in the future doesn't mean people won't have odd opinions on things, or be enlightened to our social morals, who knows what quirks of history may have lead to feudal style servitude or whatever reemerging?

The tomb of the cyberman is one of my favourite cyberman stories from the classic story and is one of my favourite cyberman story I should watch this tonight because it has been a while since I have watched it

In The Tenth Planet: Polly is tasked with making Coffee for the people. In The Moonbase: Polly is AGAIN tasked with making coffee, but the plate in which the coffee jar was, is used to seal the hole in the moonbase, which was sucking all the air out. In The Tenth Planet: Victoria and the antagonist woman who's name I forgot, are drinking coffee. Victoria later use that coffee jar to help beat a Cybermen back down that hatch. WHAT'S UP WITH CYBERMEN STORIES AND COFFEE? SERIOUSLY, IT'S THE THIRD TIME IN A ROW THAT COFFEE PLAYED A ROLE IN A CYBERMEN STORY! ARE THEY ATTRACTED TO COFFEE? IS IT THEIR WEAKNESS? IS COFFEE LITERALLY THE CAUSE AND SOLUTION TO EVERY PROBLEM RELATED TO CYBERMEN?!

just gonna say something absolutely hilarious, Mr Crewman is also a name used in the big finish audiobook spare parts, and he also likely dies in the first 5 minuets.

I'll come right out and say it, I do not have memories of Doctor Who before The Tomb of the Cybermen. My dad was a fan of the classic series, and had acquired VHS tapes and DVDs in the wilderness years before the 2005 revival, and among them was Tomb of the Cybermen. It's very probable the story that introduced me to Doctor Who. It is almost perfect. The Cybermen are depicted superbly as completely unemotional, logical, and interested in survival above all else, and the body horror of Cyber-conversion is demonstrated here more than any Classic story I can think of, other than Attack of the Cybermen. Dated views aside, the supporting cast is excellent. The Second Doctor is at his best, Jamie and Victoria are enjoyable characters, and the pacing and the way the story unfolds is excellent. Solid 9/10. The only thing holding it back is the way it depicts Toberman and the way the members of the expedition treat Victoria.

I remember the first time you looked at this story. God that feels like forever ago.

Trilbee - shows The Doctor taking Jamies Hand Me: when he talked about this story in the past he said "I bet that wasn't even scripted" Trilbee: I'm convinced that wasn't scripted. Me (Singing): Brain remembering pointless facts is fun!

A true classic, and one of the five unimpeachable Cyberman stories IMO. Ignoring the dated racial and gender politics and we have a near perfect base under siege, terrifying villains both Cyber and human, Troughton with his defining and most well rounded performance and everything working like clockwork. The format from The Moonbase was given an extra boost with better characters and plotting and it's no wonder Matt Smith used this as the serial with which to base his Doctor on.

I do appreciate that the "foreigner villain" trope seems a bit racist now, however....I understand that they were going for an homage to Mummy movies that have Egyptians in them, in fact, George Pastell who played Klieg was played Mehemet Bey in The Mummy (1959), Hashmi Bey in The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb (1964)so it was deliberate casting. As for Toberman....I always felt he wasn't dumb, he was a silent powerhouse servant and bodyguard to Kaftan but the truth was he was in my headcanon, in love with her and it was this that led to him regaining his humanity, his hatred of the Cybermen for killing her and his making the ultimate sacrifice. And he did die sealing the Tomb. He might have been in the employ of the villains but when it came to the end, he did a heroic thing with his regained humanity.

This one is absolutely wonderful, and Troughton is such a delight. The characters are not only better-thought out, but they interact pretty well with each other. I do have one nitpick upon rewatching it. Except for the unnamed crewman at the beginning, nobody had to die if the Doctor hadn't gotten them into the tomb and the various locked chambers, because they weren't smart enough to solve Cybermen's riddles. Sure, it emphasizes the Doctor's intelligence, but it doesn't say much for his morality.

its almost like this show was filmed in 1967, and the show runners didn't know they had to be woke. Then again Eric Klieg would fit in just fine.

The amount of times I picked up this VHS video in Boots in Swansea to buy it, then placed it back to purchase a different story... This is probably my favorite story of all, apart from the two 1960's Dalek films.

This was aired this morning on the dr who Roku channel. Perfect for early risers, but not for night owls.

Think this was the first classic Who I ever saw, got the video at a car boot sale in like 2007 (We still had a video player then!) Loved it - so memorable and Troughton instantly won me over

Another nitpick I had was that, apparently, the main reason the crew couldn't leave when they wanted to was their rocket had been sabotaged, and somehow the Doctor never offers them a ride home in the Tardis. They even say in dialogue that the Doctor & co. aren't stranded like the exhbition team are. Like, I feel like the act of typing that sentence should've tipped the scriptwriter off that something was skewey.

One of the minor crew member actors reappears as either Bates or Stratton I think in Attack of the Cybermen. Watch Attacks DVD extras to confirm this as I think that is where I found this out. It is also filmed in the same quarry in Gerrards Cross.

As every Cybermen fan knows, According to the late Morris Barry on his introduction, Cyber-controller suit actor Michael Kilgarriff was unsure on playing the controller since Peter Hawkins 'Who voices the Cybermen once again' would voices them once Michael has to open the mouth so he thinks about it while Morris went on finding another actor but within a few days Michael Kilgarriff spoke to Morris Barry and agree to play the Cyber-Controller and of course it won't be the last time he plays him, More on that when we reach his review on Attack of the Cybermen.

Lets all agree than his lack of clover transition from talking about the cyber controller to the 2nd Doctor was in fact a clever and witty transition via self burn?

Also, will you be covering the Wheel in Space, as two episodes exist on the Lost in Time box set, but it's not in full.

I was raised on the Target novel before the rediscovery in 1992. The only weak point is these giant tombs were only for 10 Cyberman. This was corrected in Attack of the Cybermen where they tried to show more sense of scale in the tombs and also introduced the Cryons. A good candidate for colorization.

I would love this story if they changed the Doctor's motivation to wanting to make sure the Cybermen were dead up to the point they broke out of the Tomb. "When I say Run... too late." Since he was the one who got them into the mess, making him the lone dissenter at the hatch leading to the tomb itself is... well, pure Second Doctor. Dandy, Clown... ah, Clown.
