As a Doctor Who fan, seeing the show discussed on the Campea show is so surreal! 😂 Robert suggestion of starting with Eccleston onward is perfect as it was a modern style reboot for the show in 2005! 👏

As a life long Doctor Who fan, seeing this discussed on another favourite show of mine is absolutely insane. I’m beyond thrilled that Disney is showing that Doctor Who is a viable global franchise, we’ve had 5 years of rather lacklustre marketing and now it’s great to see these kinds of announcements Doctor Who in 2023 and beyond is going to be very exciting and also a very accessible jumping on point for newcomers

This is fantastic news, and this morning when I watched Ncuit on the Dr Who KZfaq channel and him answering questions, he just casually mentioned “Exclusively on BBC and Disney+ everywhere else.” My mouth literally dropped. I was in complete shock. I literally did a double take, watched the entire two minute Q&A again, and then still didn’t believe it and looked it up on the internet where we know no one lies! And there it was. Yes, Dr Who has moved! I was so excited. (Still am)

While I generally agree with Robert about starting with New Who - and Christopher Eccleston was a great Doctor! - Twitch showed loads of Classic Dr Who in chronological order a few years ago, and the young people there loved it. They just hadn't seen anything like that before - they even loved the 60s black and white shows.

Doctor Who is sadly going to lose hundreds of thousands of viewers in Australia for new seasons due to the public broadcaster here (the ABC) no longer having the rights to Doctor Who (from 2023 onwards). This is not only because not everyone of any age group has Disney+, but also because a large portion of middle aged and elderly Australians are the vast majority viewers of ABC, and Doctor Who has always been one of the highest rated programs on ABC (and frequently in terms of general ratings that include all the commercial networks). Here in Melbourne Australia we have one of the biggest Doctor Who fan conglomerates outside of the UK, with the BBC recognising that a decade ago by bringing to Melbourne the first Doctor Who convention & official concert performance to occur outside of the U.K. There are sadly going to be few Australians who are north of 50 years of age who will continue to watch new seasons of Doctor Who, include those of them plus plenty of younger Australians who got the Britbox streaming service in no small part thanks to Doctor Who (and out of the people I know who have Britbox ALL of them are massive Doctor Who Fans). To the point of how noteworthy the breaking of this 50 year history of ABC broadcasting Doctor Who in Australia is, in ALL of the major Australian News Papers the next day the story was either on the front page or on page 3 / page 4, and featured on all Australian News websites as far as I'm aware (not to mention mentions on Australian TV news programs). All of that is highly unusual for Australian stories about TV programs, particularly non-Australian made / involved TV productions.

My wife and I just sat through all 13 seasons over the last year. It has some amazing highs, and granted some lows, but all said and done its quite special. Also as Brit who has now lived in Canada for 4 years, it has been a very welcome shot of nostalgia reminding me of home. I used to watch the reruns of the old seasons as a kid in the 90s but until this yearI had completely missed the new seasons.

A Brit here. The new Dr Who series is being co-produced by SONY. The BBC passed production over to the production company "Bad Wolf" and "Bad Wolf" is now mostly owned by SONY. So maybe that factors into who can show it, when and for how long. Many, or most of the BBC's bigger budget shows are usually international co-productions. It's not a co-incidence that you see so many non-British actors have major roles in our shows. I've lost count of the shows I've seen that are made with money from PBS or WGBH Boston.

I actually think this is a perfect fit since Doctor who is the type of family friendly show that Disney itself probably would have loved to have invented itself. Although I must say with the rumors going on about budget cuts. I kinda wish at some point Disney is able to step in and not take ownership but does a similar Hbo Max CW deal that it has with superman and lois. Have them help pay a little for it and get a reasonable cut depending on how much they put into the show. But I doubt that is going to happen any time soon. The only negative that I hope can be fixed is eventually even if s1 to 10 is still on Amazon prime in Europe for however long their deal is, that D+ can get the first 10 series along with 11 to 13 which is only watchable on HBO Max in the US. So that more viewers outside UK and US can easily start with Eccleston and treat it as either a binge or once a week and be caught up in half a year to a year depending on how they space it out. Because ever since Matt Smiths Era the show went from being still watched by fan outside the UK but not in the same numbers as Smith Era. Which made it much more worldwide than before with people starting from series 1 to catch up to watch the day of the doctor. Since with Tennant coming back for the 60th it could have done the same for the show being easily watched on D+. But I understand there would be contract problems for making it happen for now. Maybe once we get to the 16th Doctor that can end up being sorted. But for now new fans who haven't watched before but now know Tennant from other things. Might decide to go back from the start on Amazon prime to get ready for the three 60th specials in November 2023.
@WSDigitalArtwork
@WSDigitalArtwork Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t be worried about Budget Cuts, if anything the budget is going up with the 60th and new series, especially since it’s now being produced by Bad Wolf Studios instead of BBC wales meaning there is going to be extra budget and a whole new production team. and the budget will likely go up again after that as with this Disney plus push out and the 60th with Tennant it will have a massive viewer increase and more reason to have a bigger budget.

I'm really hoping Disney helps finance future seasons of Doctor Who. The first season of "Loki" reminded me of what Doctor Who could be if it had a big enough budget. The TVA/Gallifrey connection is easy to see. Kang the Conqueror reminds me a lot of The Master. Imagine a season of Doctor Who with the budget of Loki. The possibilities are endless.

My hope is that this could be the start of a partnership where we do see Disney (and specifically Marvel) helping to produce something for DOCTOR WHO. Not the main timeline, but we've always wanted a proper run for Paul McGann's 8th Doctor. A prequel series with the 8th Doctor including the events that lead up to the Time War would be perfect spin-off that i'd love to see Marvel work on.

International broadcasting/streaming rights have been spotty the last couple of years, so this is a big win for me personally with resorting to vpns or whatnot. Hbomax and bbc international have not done much lately to get the show out there. While is all new eps starting 2023, and if I'm not mistaken bad wolf productions is heading up the upcoming seasons under a returning showrunner...that has ties to Disney? Might be interesting if this pairing might lead to new animated recreations of lost dw eps from the 60s and 70s since bbca pulled out recently on these classic lost eps to animate over archived audio

I would like to know if that deal includes the old classic series since 1963 or only from the reboot in 2005 as was the case when Netflix had the rights, as they only had episodes from 2005 onwards. Also this does not help us fans in Ireland as the report says BBC maintain control in UK and Ireland but the BBC Iplayer only works for UK residents and not in Ireland leaving us with no access to classic content, (unless we buy physical media) so I hope we can view the show through Disney+ just as any other not UK countries can. 🤞

When they bought the Walking dead they not only show new episodes but all the back catalogue (Star content in Disney+) The question really is how far back will that content go. Most likely it will only go to 2005 with the revival but let's hope we get more than that 🤞

Dr who is very very quirky, fun and often very very well written and an always well acted take on very imaginative science fiction story telling. Seeing a former Dr Who kick ass and be so devilish and maniacal on House of the Dragons is a treat but I also have loved David Tennents post Who work as well. The only issue is that Dr Who is very much a cult since fiction franchise despite being a long running BBC tradition in the UK,..its sort of more cerebral and not really a mass audience thing like Star Wars or the MCU,.so im not sure how the number wil plan out for Disney

But a LOT of my friends swear by the show so I want to give it a knot her chance. My issue is that I don’t want to have to be subscribed to multiple streaming services for one series. Iirc the current seasons are streaming on HBOMAX which I don’t have (and probably won’t even consider subscribing to until Zaslav is no longer in control of WB) so I really hope those episodes get brought over to D+ so that new audiences will have an easy time going back to the “beginning” if they like the new season.

In regards to preservation, it's only 60s era doctor Who that has missing episodes. Everything from the 70s and onwards survives.

Correction - there are some missing Jon Pertwee episodes from the early 70's as well, but they've managed to get round that problem by using black and white copies that were sent overseas to countries without colour television, and re-colouring them. 👍👍

@@madworldproductions855 That's a fair point actually. You're right, for people just getting into it, starting with the modern stuff and then if they like it, going back and watching the classic stuff, that's actually a better way for people to start watching Doctor Who. I apologise for jumping to conclusions, I should've seen it from that point of view as well
@ReversedPolarity
@ReversedPolarity Жыл бұрын
I sometimes disagree with Rob, but what he actually meant wasn't that. He only said "don't start with the Tom Baker run" or the classics. He means that because of the outdated production stuff and he's sort of right. If you are interested in the chronological journey and haven't seen the show, you better be prepared for some slow burners and lots of theatrical preparation. I love the classics but for most people I would also recommend Eccleston onwards and then go back, especially before the 50th because one should watch the TV movie at that point (even though it's optional). After some time (maybe after S7), I would recommend going with the classics unless you really want to go forward (mostly because there will be a LOT of nods to the past). It's not necessary since the modern series have all the info, but it will make the experience a lot more special imo.

I've seen every episode of Doctor Who available, not that I've been a fan of it, but because I've had friends that were fans of it. I watched caused they watched. After seeing the Old Who episodes, I kept up the New Who show out of habit more than anything else. I'm already subscribed to Disney+ so it's not like I'm going to stop watching Who cause of the move. At least, I'll know there will be consistent runs instead of the highly staggered releases during the last Chibnall Era.

If you are gonna watch the show for the first time i recommend watching it from 2005 with christopher eccleston. Then David tennant and the 2009 specials with tennant also before watching season five with matt smith. Then capaldi and after skip Jodie trust me it killed the show along with the Awful retcon. And before someone tells me well doctor who has always been blah with its continuity. Yea so has every big franchise but for the most part it was handled pretty well. But what chibnall did was crossing the line. After watching the ten seasons of modern doctor who then i recommend watching classic who from the 1st doctor with William Hartnell and so on from there. Oh and make sure you watch the 50th anniversary between season 7 and eight of modern who also.

The problem with starting with tom is that it is season 12 of classic who. When so many of the characters have already been established. Like the unit members Benton and brigadier and Sarah jane. If you are going to watch classic who it is best to start from season 1.

I am not a massive fan of the Mouse based on its negative attitude to physical media and how it treated Get Back releases. I am a huge Dr Who fan and live in the UK so will not need to rejoin Disney Plus to watch future series. The up side of Disney involvement in Dr Who is more funding and possibility that Disney can fund restorations of missing episodes from 60s. Disney cert@only has a proven track record in animations. So here is hoping.
