While we love to put our 2-parter episodes back-to-back, this week we’re going to start something to only leave you hanging until next Thursday. But no worries! If you’d like to see the second-half right away, support us over at Patreon.com/FanTheoryTV to get exclusive FULL LENGTH episodes of this series right away!
This is for the most part, the most outlandish and troublesome episode to date where the Doctor comes face-to-face with what could be construed as the epitome of evil itself (at least of Christianity). But more than that, this is an episode that stands out as an episode where the Doctor truly has to question everything he’s ever known.
Paula’s so excited, are you?

I love how the Beast is voiced by Gabriel Woolf, who had already played a God of destruction in 'Doctor Who before this, as Sutekh in the Tom Baker story 'Pyramids of Mars' in 1975.

Such a rich, menacing voice by Gabriel Woolf. Season 13’s ‘Pyramids Of Mars’ is an essential viewing. No DW fan should ever go through life never watching this story (or the 1975/6 season for that matter). After all PoM did make it into the Top 5 all time Best DW stories.

Pyramids of Mars would be a great story regardless, but Gabriel Woolf's understated and articulate portrayal of Sutekh is just flawless. He turns would could have been a ridiculously over the top ranting villain into the most dangerous and chilling opponent the Doctor ever faces. He is absolutely the best voice Satan could have!

This is Murray Gold when he is still being creative and crafting whole new sounds for the show. I agree this two parter's soundtrack is one of his very best. For me, Murray is usually reliable for the first 5 series. Unfortunately after that I feel he goes a bit stale, especially for the last few years of his tenure. Although he'll still have the occasional return to top form here and there, the Smith and Capaldi era soundtracks to me can start to seem tired, formulaic and repetitive. He often refuses to let scenes breathe on their own, being too quick to swamp them in saccharine sweeps that take me out of the story. I was pleased when Chibnall had him replaced. The show desperately needed to regenerate it's soundscape. Personally I'd prefer the show to go back to the old Radiophonic workshop era of music provision, with a pool of different composers chipping in to create unique feels for each episode. Murray Gold would be a welcome name amongst them. Unfortunately modern TV seems deeply allergic to doing that.

13:44 Because they always have the security of the Tardis which is O.P. Soon as they lost it...shit just got real. Two things to keep in mind. 1. Rose is just a kid. She has over confidence in the Doctor that he will always save the day 2. And the doctor.. I could write a 5 page essay as to why he's chipper. It's just a surface persona, trust me. It doesn't take much for him to throw it out the window and get serious. But he's the one thing that helps shed light and hope on all of these dire situations. He's trying to teach others that life doesn't have to always be doom and gloom if you learn how to get some perspective and appreciate exactly what's going on. There's always bad and good things happening. Most only fixate on the bad.

They don't take anything seriously (see Tooth and Claw, The Idiot's Lantern, the beginning of this episode) until they're separated, at which point they become deadly serious (The Idiot's Lantern, this episode, Fear Her). "This went to hell in a handbasket real fast" LOL! :D:D This was creepy! This was an excellent episode. And the questions you raise were handled really well.. I liked seeing the Doctor's views challenged. In the end... oh well, just watch. :D I agree about how lightly Rose and the Doctor take things. I think when nine regenerated into ten, he was very affected by Rose and "picked up" some of her youth. I kinda think he does pick up stuff from his previous "life" when regenerating. Go back to the werewolf one-- he and rose were GIDDY about the adventure-- not really taking it seriously. I think Rose trusts him so much, and has grown in ability to face things- so she doesn't see the risk. And I think the doctor, who as Nine was war scarred, is just enjoying the "youth" -- almost like having a mid life crisis. Will it all catch up with them? We will see.

I just noticed you don't appear to have watched David Tennant's first full episode which was a Christmas special, you seem to have started watching from 2x01 New Earth, that wasn't his first episode, the Christmas Special which was his first episode carried on directly from the end of "Season 1" after he had just changed. It would be best if you watched the special episodes in the order they're shown in, i.e. between the seasons. His first episode was actually quite a strong story too and was a Jacqui heavy episode so there's lot of laughs, plus I think it's the first time he meets "Ricky" :)

When the black hole setting for this episode came out well in advance, people really thought this was going to be Omegas return. Ironically, it was Thorne's OTHER guest starring role in the classic story The Daemons, where he played, well, a daemon, that was the inspiration in casting him here.

The Doctor has long standing issues with impossibility. I always remember the Doctor's quote from Robots of Death: "To the rational mind nothing is inexplicable. Only unexplained." \|/ This two episode story arc has just ALWAYS stuck with me for some Ood reason. (Heh... sorry.) I mean, I dunno why exactly, though, not really; it isn't as if the writing or dialog was all that exceptional in this specific storyline, nor was the acting as impressive or great as it eventually did get to be... I'm just sayin', y'all... That this story's arc and the execution in its making... Well, it just wasn't the "make me tear up with the feels," levels of great that more than a few of Doctor Who's other storyline arcs just so undeniably HAVE risen to, at times... heh, ya know? I guess that it was simply the story's overarching concept... Alongside that original'ish methodology of the devil's imprisonment... wherein there is this unspecified utilization of a Black Holes' gravitational warping and the physics of mass inside and outside of the near-event-horizon P.O.N.R. gravitational field imprisonment that the insidious legendary myth of "THE" original, Beastform Satan, was being kept trapped within... Kinda neat. Oh, that... AND The Doctor just deciding to actually leap(drop) into the literal unknown depths of a Hell Pit; ahh... and lastly, the Ood are just so memorable and are just innately some of the creepiest and more horrific out of the myriad different monstrously alien "Doctor Who" races... I mean, those damned implanted speech orbs on them were just messed up as all nine hells, man... Ha! Now, I, personally, just sincerely would not really wish to have all of my labor force and servants being required to be one of these disturbingly disgusting, mutilated, and enslaved lifeform... And yet, they were once a benign, peaceful alien race... That was some rather interesting stuff. But hey, that's just me... Ha!
