the reason they've done regenerations in the tardis is because it's a closed set and don't want set photos leaking online

It's just a convention that has grown up in New Who. With the change in style of regenerations to the big pyrotechnic display we now get I suppose it is handy to have a standing set to rig rather than blowing apart some random location. In Classic Who regenerations were much more low key affairs basing featuring the Doctor passing out, some random visual effect and then the new Doctor stands up. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th and 8th regeneration all happened outside the Tardis. Only in the first regeneration is it implied that the Tardis takes an active part in the process--and at that point it wasn't even referred to as regeneration but rather 'renewal'. Secrecy doesn't seem a likely reason; not only is the Tardis set is no more or less secure than any other studio setting but the actors taking the role are trailed far ahead of the regeneration. In the case of Tennant, he was announced by the BBC only about 3 weeks into Ecclestone's run
@oldwebshooter

@@MrPaulMorris Yes the regen were more low key, but only in comparison to the god like nature given the the new Doctor Whos.

No a time lord doesn't need to be in a TARDIS to regenerate. The doctor regenerated a few times outside his box. 3 to 4, 4 to 5, 7 to 8 all happened not in the TARDIS.

Derek Jacobi is brilliant in this episode. His switch from affable, bumbling Professor to the pure evil of The Master, with just the expression in his eyes, is utterly chilling, and shows why he is regarded as one of Britain's greatest living actors. A pity he only got one episode as The Master - at least there are the Big Finish audios to enjoy.

The master originated in the early 70s as a nemesis time lord for the 3rd doctor... he made occasional appearances right through classic who and indeed is in the very final story before it was cancelled in the late 80s. If you rewatch the season again after finishing this season you will understand why martha recognises his voice... lots of little hints etc, in fact clues for the masters returned appear a few times prior to this season... a headline in a newspaper during the xmas special etc...

The TARDIS does take an active part in helping a timelord to regenerate, namely in the form of the zero room which helps the Time Lord to deal with any post-regeneration instability, it happened with the 5th Doctor, who wasn't himself until he got into the Zero Room. The 8th Doctor and 7th Doctor both regenerated outside of the TARDIS, 7 because of a botched surgery and 8 because of a drink he believed would cause him to regenerate into aa person capable of fighting in the time war (but in the Day of The Doctor Novelisation, it's revealed that all 8 drank was Lemonade which triggered a placebo effect.)

The Master is the the Doctors arch nemesis. He first made an appearance during the 3rd Doctors (Jon Pertwee) adventures and became a regular villain during the rest of the classic Who period of the 70s and 80s. He's like what Professor Moriarty is to Sherlock Holmes. You should watch some classic Who adventures to find out more😀. On a side note, Derek Jacobi, who plays the older Master in this episode, is carrying on with that role in the Big Finish audio adventures of Doctor Who. They are very good.

A timelord doesn't need to be in a TARDIS to regenerate. The Doctor himself has regenerated outside the TARDIS a few times. Though, there is a link (psychic we know) between the Doctor (an companions) and the TARDIS. I suppose most of the regenerations occur there, as that is where they end up (and aim to be) most of the time and where they feel safest.

“The Master” the ultimate doctor who villain first seen in the 1970s! Each time lord chooses a name when they become a time lord (as opposed to a regular gallifreyan). Any time lord can regenerate 12 times though some find it harder to do than others. No tardis required

I don't suppose it is a spoiler to say the Master is villain (introduced in the early seventies) as an opposite to the Doctor. A Moriarty type character who is just as (or more) intelligent than the Doctor but who's motivation is towards chaos and destruction.

Yes so Jack had his own spin off show called Torchwood. The first season ran along side this season and then he joins in for a crossover. But if you watch that show it’s well established that he can’t die but he doesn’t why until here. Torchwood is both a little more cheesy and way more adult. Like the budget is a bit lower and some of the stories are smaller but it’s...not made for kids in the same way Doctor Who is. More nudity and a lot darker

As other people have said... Tha Master is a character from the Classic series. However the new series will fill you in on everything you need to know about him as they go along. Basically the Doctor and the Master were at school together from the age of 8 and were friends. Somewhere along the line the Master went bad. We saw various different incarnations of him from 1971 to 1989. ARCH-NEMISIS! (Very arch sometimes!) No Time Lords don't need to be in a TARDIS when they regenerate (we have seen the Doctor regenerate not in the TARDIS in the Classic series and the modern series has addressed this too in episodes you have yet to see.) But it is said that it can help.

The Master is basically, functionally, the Doctor's toxic ex-boyfriend, who was introduced during the third Doctor era in the 1970s (already in that antagonistic role but with an implied history). He was last seen in the 1996 movie (already cheating to stay alive past running out of lives). This episode is almost entirely subterfuge and setup. A lot of the Jack stuff leading up to this was explored in season 1 of Torchwood.

Please stop talking over dialogue, it’s rude to your audience who, 1. May want to also hear the show. 2. Find it irritating when you end up commenting on the things you missed/didn’t understand at the end. 3. May be looking forward to your reaction to particular lines of dialogue or episode moments that you unfortunately end up missing due to offering commentary while the show is still playing. If you pause and then provide comments or wait until moments when dialogue is not occurring, you will find you’ll encounter fewer unhappy viewers and have less confusion and misunderstanding of what you’ve viewed.
